The Convocation of Mages Posted: 27 Oct 2006 11:49 AM |
A length of hemp and linen rag paper is fixed onto two wooden rollers and left with Shamn within the ground floor of Ka’azim tower. Anyone can access it. Shamn will not allow it to leave his presence, asking that it be examined and utilized on the table where he receives visitors. Barring distraction he will watch as items are entered onto the parchment and receive it after entries have been made.
To start the long paper is scrolled almost entirely onto one side, and tied together with a woven hemp cord. Untying the cord and rolling out the paper, the following heading can be read:
"AGENDA of CONVOKING
In this hour it grows clear that affairs require the coordinated Attention of the most sage and wise men and women of the land. There is a time for those mages of excellent quality to pursue Their Own Interests ~
To Study the Craft To Create fine Things To Work Enchantments upon the World To Pursue the Advancement of Knowledge in All Things To Act on Behalf of those who Make it Necessary That we Act To Travel the Land in search of Discovery To Consolidate Power and Wealth
And There is a time for the Mages of Vives To Be Gathered in Convocation~
To Discuss the Affairs of concern to All.
This Convocation shall be open to all mages of the land ~ Regardless of Creed, Race or School
Signal your willingness to attend by entering your concerns, In list fashion, into this Agenda.
~Entries may be made anonymously if they are also made respectfully~
The Convocation will conclude when these things have been Addressed."
What follows is yards of blank scrolled paper.
((OOC - this is something to bat around for a couple of weeks. This social/RP event will take place in November at a date TBD... perhaps TBD in this thread. For now please keep it IC and don't be shy about posting if you visit Ka'azim!)) |

Valethrion nods slightly as the mage at the door elaborates on the doings of his brethren at Ka'azim. Despite his wane, weary appearance, he smiles and bows slightly, then goes to make an entry.
The misuse of magic has long been a trouble for me. People (humans and Hin, most notably) using their powers or items imbued with some other mage's power are a threat to the order established by the founding of mage bastions such as Ka'azim and Tel'Elena.
I humbly ask that this issue be discussed and, hopefully, acted upon by this gathering.

The door to the tower of the Ka'azim opens and small blond figure hurries across the room to stop right in front of Shamn. He blinks twice, then looks over the elven woman.
"Shihaya'zad. Greetings, dear. You still can not enjoy a -slow- walk through the park?"
"Greetings, Shamn." she responds with a smile. "Time is a valuable thing."
"Well, before you head upstairs...this will be of interest to you." he says and motions a nod to the paper roll on his desk. Shihaya'zad nods and reads its contents, picks up a quill from Shamn´s desk and begins to write:
To Pursue the Advancement of Knowledge in All Things. As it is written above, and true for those showing responsibility. What is the price of knowledge? Where is the thin line between Use and Abuse?
Not to forget, observations regarding the current situation, especially occurences in the Plains and areas close.

A flurry of loose robes undulate around the wizard, his sharp eyes glance at Shamn, then stare down at the massive scroll. He plunges a hand into his robe to pick out a singular quill pen. There is a stroke of the great beard flowing from his chin, then the distinctive scratching of pen on parchment.
Items of grave importance must be discussed. One, the theorized and prophesized change of universal balance in Vives. What is happening? What can be done? Two, a jiggly threat: the immense increase in population of gelatinous lifeforms, where does it begin? And where does it end? Three, apprenticeship programs. There are too many bubbling young wizards who need direction, will we give it to them? Four, undead in the desert. What of them? Amendment: Five, Designer Robes, why do Aramani and Versusci not make them available to us? Why?
Bereil Yadasem
The mass of robes scrambles back to the desk, almost losing his footing on the cold stone floor. He whips out the quill again and scratches in the Fifth Amendment. |

Re: The Convoker's Agenda Posted: 27 Oct 2006 03:25 PM |
Lucius read through the list that had already been written, and recalled his recent conversations with Talion and Bereil. Realistically, he knew, he had little to contribute. A year travelling the realms as a wizard had taught him little about what was currently happening in Vives, and he would spend most of his time in this meeting listening. He'd heard enough of his own voice lately anyway, always seeming to land on the wrong side of an argument for the wrong reasons. He was tired, and if the world was tired too, maybe they could both fall into an eternal slumber in sympathy.
Looking further up the rolled parchment, he scowled as he read the entries from the elves. Old, dour, and now ordering human paladins around to do their dirty work, they allude, as always, to the rest of us buggering up the world, his inner voice hissed.
Then his face brightened. Taking a raven-feather quill in his left hand, and dipping it in copious amounts of ink, he wrote the following, in his best imitation of child-like hin writing, large blots of ink spilling as he did.
Of ships and domes and unseen gnomes, I'll never be able to follow it all, Allusion, illusion, or maybe elusion, Some say we're all being set for a fall, Making demons and feeding the hate of the hateful, I've been told that we hasten the call, Responsible magic! That's what they say, Perhaps I can learn what that is some day.
He left it unsigned. |

Re: The Convoker's Agenda Posted: 27 Oct 2006 07:25 PM |
A deadened heart did not easily mix with an eye for detail and so there were several seconds of dutifully attentive non-comprehension upon the notice before the meaning sifted its way past the harrowing thoughts whispers of discontent, down to the part of Rosen's mind that governed her day to day decisions. She had come to beg access to her only known source of magical scrollpaper, and had been, as usual, unceremoniously barred from entry. The agenda, dotted here and there with observations and schemes, swam in front of her vision, brackish ink sweeping like tall grass in the wind or creeping tentacles, ever-grasping.
She blinked rapidly and cleared her throat, the mild sound reverberating off the near-silent walls of the tower, and produced a well-used quill. The note was unsolicitous and brief, possessed of a gritty dignity.
Esteemed Magisters and Casters of All Stripes,
I am unable to weave the threads of magic, but am something of a theoretical magician, having been educated in many of the fundamentals during my youth and necessarily learning the basics of spellcraft in order to create functioning scrolls. Moreover, such a convocation is tantamount to a meeting of the keenest minds on Vives as well as the world's most able willworkers, and is thusly an eminent event in and of itself -- to say the least.
I will therefore, as acquiantence to some of you, friend to others, and goodwill ambassador of the Alliance, be in respectful, attentive, and silent attendance, unless magical proficiency is utterly mandatory ala the now defunct and certainly dubious Magistry. I would not suspect such exclusionary and suspicious tactics of practising gentlemen and lady mages. Not in an era where public trust is already rarer than a Kobai oasis.
Do not hesitate to inform me if I can be of service somehow in regards to this meeting. I can be reached through the usual channels.

Re: The Convoker's Agenda Posted: 28 Oct 2006 11:07 PM |
Zubeida discretely enters Ka'azim tower. She has come with some misgiving. Upon reading the scroll in Shamn's care, she resists a strong urge to turn and walk away. A conversation amongst friends is one thing, a convocation quite another. Nevertheless, her curiousity outweighs her fears.
She borrows a quill and ink from Shamn and enters her items into the agenda:
1. The nature of dragons and the weaving of our world's magical firmament. What is the connection? The tale of the flights of dragons taking to the air after the battle of the Sisters in Icy Vale may be a point of departure in this inquiry. The nature of blood mages perhaps are another window into this mystery. 2. Zones of wild magic. Where are they? What is their history? For example, the shimmering lights on the Great Plains are said to mark the spot where an angel and dragon battled. 3. Suppressed magic in Maldovia. Is it the result of entropy weakening magic or more akin to the situation in Midor? 4. The balance of magic. What credence is there to the folk saying "power corrupts"? Madness seems to plague the greatest practitioners of the Art. Could too great a concentration of power also unbalance the world? The proliferation of wild magic zones throughout the world at the time of the Battle of Icy Vale suggests that indeed it does.

Delivered by hand, the messenger unnamed but clearly Elven, is a parchment.
The text is in common, precisely formed and scripted, but clearly by an Elven hand and says simply:
I shall, if possible, attend |
ELVES! |

Re: The Convoker's Agenda Posted: 29 Oct 2006 11:08 AM |
The parchment he takes from the hand of the peer of Tel'Elena. He reads it quickly and frowns just a little. A polite thank you he offers to the figure already retreating to attend to his own agenda. He walks to a desk and dips a quill beginning to write quickly in flowing common script:
"Although there is little one such as I can offer; I will attend if it is elvenly possible. I look forward to hearing your concerns and will inform those I meet who might be interested or make some contribution to such matters."
He hands the rolled parchment to a pixie with orders to deliver it to Shamn in Ka'azim.

[In Balthor's peculiar handwriting.]
I'd like to just point out, if anyone missed it, that the invitation is extended to all wizards, regardless of creed. I know there are some folks out there who are particularly powerful, but might be unwilling to attend, for mundane reasons like "They've killed us," or "They've tried to destroy the world," or "They're liches." These beings deserve the right to attend too, I believe, without the threat of us destroying them. Granted, I don't suspect they'll show, but I suspect some of them may have choice words (and probably speak rather eloquently) on a number of our topics, and perhaps shed light on a few things.

Oh yes! I'd like to second our Esteemed Eunuch Colleague's suggestion.
Let's invite someone such as Vestlat.
I've never witnessed a room of Wizards getting blasted to Nethar'u by a cranky old Lynaeum Arch Mage.
It should be a most amusing and educational experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives, all 14 seconds of it.

It has been my experience that they only seem to kill us when we intrude on their homes.
The point is these people have spent... probably multiple lifetimes studying the arcane arts, and I think they deserve the right to attend.
Besides. The only thing potentially different from them and some of the people actually attending may only be their openness about their intentions.

Elghinn Senger meticulously read each and every like of the scroll, noting who was going to be there, and what they were eager to discuss.
He stopped at Bereil's words and issues he wished to tend to. What caught his attention fully was the issue which he had thought about many times.
Three, apprenticeship programs. There are too many bubbling young wizards who need direction, will we give it to them?
"Finally!" Elghinn wrote in a miniscule font his name, fully planning to attend this conference of minds. |

The Convoker's Agenda Posted: 26 Nov 2006 05:57 PM |
Fredo scratches his nose as he waits for Salt to cover the distance between his shop door and the counter where he does business. Passing his stores, step by step, the seer chatters and sucks his teeth.
In his robes the seer blocks out sunlight that shows through the open door. “Morning, Winky. I mean Fredo. Heh… sorry for that, Fredo. Of course I know it’s Fredo, always has been.”
A few steps closer and Salt filches a piece of savory taffy, concealing his theft by gazing up at merchandise hung high from a rafter. Fredo rests one fist on his hip, watching.
Salt stops to jostle a lantern, touching it with a fist closed around his gnarled knotty ironwood staff. He sees beeswax candles nearby and recollects a need for them, scooping up a dozen with his free hand.
As Salt reaches the counter, he finds that Fredo is lifting his special order onto the countertop. They are heavy, and each is presented with a heavy clunk. Then they are pushed together, left and right, and slid forward for Salt’s inspection.
They are magnificently durable clogs, with leather uppers fixed to the soles with small tacks. Sewer workers in Port Royale wear clogs very much like them. The soles are sawn from alder wood, fully three fingers thick. They can be worn over slippers to protect finer footwear from harm, or worn directly on the feet for a long journey.
Salt drops them to the floorboards and holds his staff for balance as he steps into them. He takes cautious steps navigating in a circle that returns him to Fredo’s counter. Salt appears pleased and so Fredo is pleased and proud as well.
Having paid for them and a few other traveling supplies, Salt shuffles out into the sunlight. Staff in hand he sets off down the road that leads to the Bloodwood. Through it he will walk veiled by magical protections, and then across the desert, until he reaches Port Royale, and the mage tower of Ka’azim that lies beyond its shores.
* * * * *
Arriving at the tower, Salt takes up a length of hemp and linen rag scrolled onto wooden rollers. He has watched this agenda grow over the past weeks and sees that it has become complete, if the voices of his fellow mages can account for anything like completeness.
Some of the entries are cryptic. An Elven hand – if Salt is any judge of it – wrote simply “I shall, if possible, attend.” The seer runs a finger over the writing and smiles. The entire document is a heady brew of impressions and Salt uses his hands to sort through them.
No one is truly anonymous.
Though there is far more to the document than words, he arranges the items as best he can into an agenda, list-fashion. Once they are set in his mind, Salt scrolls down to a fresh space on the paper and begins to write. He leaves room for last-minute additions but begins nonetheless in a firm hand:
LET THE FOLLOWING AGENDA STAND
~Preliminary business~
Will non-mages be permitted to attend? Will Blood Mages? Will they have a voice in this gathering?
Let the majority carry this issue. To be decided at Convocation.
~Research and New Areas of Knowledge~
The ancient teleportation portals and their function – what can be shared?
The theorized and prophesized change of universal balance in Vives. What is happening? What can be done?
A jiggly threat: the immense increase in population of gelatinous lifeforms, where does it begin? And where does it end?
Observations regarding the occurrences in the Plains and areas close.
Zones of wild magic. Where are they? What is their history? For example, the shimmering lights on the Great Plains are said to mark the spot where an angel and dragon battled.
Undead in the desert. What of them?
The nature of dragons and the weaving of our world's magical firmament. What is the connection? The tale of the flights of dragons taking to the air after the battle of the Sisters in Icy Vale may be a point of departure in this inquiry. The nature of blood mages perhaps are another window into this mystery.
Suppressed magic in Maldovia. Is it the result of entropy weakening magic or more akin to the situation in Midor?
~Practical Magic~
Tapping into the resource represented by the land’s ancient liches and syncursed – nominations made for the purposes of contacting said entities, as recommended by esteemed Magus Mountainhand
What is “responsible magic”? What are the ethical implications of sharing the most powerful magics or helping fellow mages to attain power above their circle?
The enchantment of items for the use of non-mages ~ called Misuse of Magic by some ~ Is this a threat to the order established by Ka’azim and Tel’Elena?
Regarding the balance of magic.
Apprenticeship programs. There are too many bubbling young wizards who need direction, will we give it to them?
~Complaints, Pleas, and Appeals for Reason~
Designer Robes, why do Aramani and Versusci not make them available to us? Why?
((OOC - Any last minute additions? PM me and I'll edit them in. As for scheduling this meet, what about Dec. 1st and 2nd, assuming that this could flow over to two sessions. Say around Midnight GMT? Feel free to comment on scheduling this in an OOC fashion below.)) |
