PAJWT Trashed!
Posted: 19 Sep 2006 02:44 AM
Pickston and Jessup's Wild Tours was trashed earlier yesterday, most of its doors broken down and the restaurant area in disarray, with chairs and tables flung every which way.

Shopkeeper Calbert says that it was merely due to a rousing celebration. When pressed for details, he merely winked and said that a new deal had been struck and PAJWT was expanding to "other areas and other industries".

"It's all very exciting," the man gushed. "I'm not surprised that the folks at the party got a bit carried away... mark my words, you'll be hearing more about it soon!"

Merchant Gariert adds that it was the work of a massive Half-Orc Paladin by the name of Og, who was seen entering PAJWT with a scruffy-looking redhead.

"Yeah, he was so happy. That must be it. Must've found out something really exciting-like," Gariert agrees. "How much am I getting paid to say this crap again?"

PAJWT owner Jessup the Younger could not be reached for comment.

Karli rocks gently in the makeshift hammock, the wide swath of sail denim having been liberated from a pile of cast-offs on the loading docks. Now, somewhere between the moat surrounding her home town and the ruins of the lighthouse on the hill, Karli listens with casual interest to the chatter of passing travelers without making herself an ostentatious presence.

Jessup's place trashed? Party? None of this boded well. Karli's admittedly peevish but fully justified loathing of the old man and his endeavors simmered a bit closer toward a boil, hearing of the prospects that, despite his old age, the orc was going to be enjoying and expansion of powers. Apparently reducing Port Royal to a den of thieves and cowering dogs wasn't enough; now his cancer of greed and corruption was going elsewhere.

Karli wasn't eager to go into town. She'd been happily avoiding Port Royal for most of a month, now. Her brief stay at home had been a little more heart-breaking than she'd imagined. Knowing the truth of things wasn't the healing salve she'd hoped it'd be. Askwith manor was only ghosts and echoes to her. She wondered how long it would be before the inveitable decay of Jessup's influence reached the hill, and Askwith manor became nothing more than a boarding house for whores and mercenaries.

What would it take to break him? That would depend on what his resources were. They were considerable, both in terms of money and people - especially people. The worse elements of society flocked to him in order to feed off his power and use it for themselves. The ambivalent simply left him alone. The morally apathetic took what they could and Jessup was only to happy to use their services. And the good, honorable folk in society had long ago just accepted him. They all believed things were better off with him, since he was keeping Midor away. They actually believed that! Hah!

Midor. Right. Having seen it from the inside, from the top down tot he bottom, Karli understood Midor. Good people turned away from the world for the most part, sure, but it was crumbling. The Righteous Swords were starting to grate at the nervous endings of the noble. Righteous Swords. Phht. Four of them were dead, thanks to Karli. They weren't so horrible once you saw a few of them bleed. Karli's fear of the Righteous Swords was as impotent as her fear of Jessup.

The problem was that he still made other people afraid. All it would take it a public act of defiance. Something that Jessup couldn't turn to his advantage and something he could avenge as an example to the others. The people who paid him protection money to keep their precious body parts intact needed an alternative. Someone who would see to their good just because it was the right thing to do. They needed heroes, dangnabit, but where were the heroes these days?

Dead or off worrying about themselves. It was pathetic. They were all pathetic - the Aristi, the Midori, the Illuminati. What did they do except performt the occasional daring act of useless violence in order to console themselves that they were still good people in a world gone bad? Karli admitted to herself that she was amidst their number, but she wasn't a knight, nor a trained fighter, nor an oath-sworn defender of the people. She was a singer and an actress. The real heroes had abandoned Port Royal to its fate, and the people starved and degraded themselves because of it.

Karli flipped over in her hammock, letting an arm drape over one side, fingertips brushing the pine-needles on the ground. Defiance. That's all heroing ever was. Defiance inthe name of hope. Port Royal didn't have any hope. It was a city that sat on the mouth into Hell, ruled by greed and apathy. Gods, how she hated the nobility! Gods, how she hated Jessup and everyone who worked for him.

She'd need resources. Money and people willing to do the right thing. She'd need to convince a few thousand people that it would be worth the sacrifice of their lives and their comfort to make their city good again. She'd need to get the nobles on her side. She'd need the queen's support.

Karli Goodfellow couldn't do it. Karli Goodfellow was a nobody, despite her fame and her talents. A good fellow, perhaps, but no one of real consequence. She wasn't the right person for this.

But maybe Karlina Genevre Askwith was.

Port Royale is abuzz with excitement over the public unveiling today of the plans of the noble philanthropist Jessup the Younger.

"I be a lova a tha artz!" the Half-Orc proclaimed. "I lova tha peoplez of Port."

Backing up his words with swift and decisive action, Jessup has been engaged in a frenzy of activity lately, most notably stepping in to personally assist in the reparation of Port Royale's destroyed marketplace.

But that wasn't enough for the famous owner of Pickston and Jessup's Wild Tours. After weeks of secret planning and activity, he opened the Angels of Mercy earlier today: Port Royale's biggest and most ambitious social centre, devoted to aiding the poor and needy of the city.

Along with Lord and Lady Vanderzee, he has also invested a lot of time and money into improving Port Royale's local temple over the past year. The Temple finally reopened at the same time as the Angels of Mercy today with a brand new look and feel... and a brand new priestess in charge.

"Excrement elementals, Undead, more Undead, demons... adventurers slogging through sewers and catacombs and hell itself and getting themselves killed through their own stupidity, or bringing misery and death and suffering to my city because of aforementioned stupidity... I've had enough. I'm getting too old for this," High Priestess Cydarine remarked. "I think I'll retire to Asashi now, lead a nice quiet life away from the stress and hustle and bustle of the city."

She is succeeded by Sister Tasha, who would have been assigned to the Order of the Seven Sisters to replace Sister Florence if not for this unexpected development.

"It is sad to see her go. I learned a lot from High Priestess Cydarine. I pray I am up to the task," the young woman says humbly.

As if that wasn't enough, it appears that there are still more arrangements in the works, the Half-Orc going on an unstoppable spree to spread joy and prosperity throughout Port Royale.

"I wantz ta holdz a zelebrationz for tha Port!" Jessup announced, barely able to contain his exuberance. "Therez gonna be a festivalz of the artz! YUZ! With tha bannerz and a paradez!"

The Half-Orc, it seems, has entered a partnership and bought the Stagecrafters, placing none other than the renowned Willom Wilde in charge.

"That Willomz, he'z like a brudda!" Jessup roared, laughing at some unknown joke. "He'z redecoratingz tha Stagecrafturz and planning tha feztival! He a tinker! And an initiativer!"

The festival will be held on the same day as the re-opening of Wilde's Stagecrafters and will be free for all to attend. There will be competitions, stalls and entertainment, and all donations will go to the Angels of Mercy to help the poor of Port Royale. It is rumoured that the Queen herself will be in attendance to make a very special presentation.
