Alis sees the announcement and her eyes widen as she reads it. She hangs her head and covers her face with her palms, and lets out a sad, trembling little sigh.
"Oh no. Dana, what have you done..."
She walks away, looking absolutely miserable and heartbroken. |

((A letter slipped under the door of Lucius and Dana's room at the Mask))
Dear Lucius,
As you may have heard, Dana is wanted by the authorities of Ferein for murder.
I understand how difficult this must be for you, but you must convince her to turn herself over to the Elven authorities and stand trial for her actions. I realize that every ounce of you must be screaming out to protect her from harm, but if she does not answer for her actions and you aid her in escaping justice, you shall be tainting yourself with her sin, and yourself become a criminal.
You fought side by side with me to save Ferein from the danger of the Tear. I hope that you understand that it is my duty to help to bring Dana to justice, however much that might strain our relationship. I sincerely regret it, but unfortunately Dana's actions leave me no choice.
I do not hate Dana. I do not relish seeing her punished. What has transpired has brought me great sorrow, both for the slain elves and their families and in thinking of the moral dilemma in which you must now find yourself in. I know it is difficult, and I know most would not be able to do it, but you must try to bring Dana to justice. I swear to you that I shall do everything in my power to make her arrest as free of pain and danger as possible, but I must help to right this terrible wrong.
I hope you understand.

Lucius left the offices of PAJWT in a hurry, his walk appearing drunken and unbalanced. His mind and body, so carefully controlled since first reading the notice at the Broken Mask, were now both unravelling. He had some breathing space to allow them to unravel. Dana was safe. That was what mattered.
He walked into the public toilets and ran for the stall in the rear that most men avoided. It would provide the release he needed. He ran in, closed the door, and breathed in deeply. The next moment he gagged from the putrid smell, and he let go of the tightness in his diaphragm, allowing nausea to take him in waves. He retched into the open hole, as though somehow emptying his stomach would empty him of the demons that now haunted him.
When he was done, tears rolling down his cheeks, mucous and bile mixed and hanging from his chin, his nose full of acidic, partially digested material from his last meal, Lucius stood slowly, pulled an old rag from his pack and wiped his face on it, replacing tears and vomit with smudges of dirt. Five minutes later, he left, eyes forward, face emotionless, feet heeding his call to walk straight, body heeding his call to stay composed.
He had a letter to write.
**************************************************************************
Earlier that day, he had left in search of Dana. He had slipped out of his room quietly, used Jusin's services to head to Buckshire, and ran overland to Icy Vale. He had expected to find Dana in M'Gok Tukar, but she was standing nonchalantly in front of the Icy Vale Hot Springs as he hurried past. He stopped when he saw her, looked over, and walked up beside her slowly.
Noticing Lucius, Dana smiled broadly and greeted him. "Hullo's. Lucius gud?"
On seeing the smile on Dana's face, the grim look on his own visage darkened. His eyes turned towards hers, though looking off into a distance that could be a thousand miles beyond her. "Do you know that the elves have posted notices throughout all of Vives asking for information allowing them to find you and Ophelia?" he asked quietly.
"Dana haff no' s seez dem." The reply is given in the same cheery tone, as though Dana is oblivious of Lucius' mood.
"They wish to put you on trial for the murder of six elves," he said evenly.
"Pfft," Dana said dismissively, "Dana no's haff put da fingurr on da elfies."
Impatience showing on his face, Lucius looked around before continuing. "Dana, listen to me..."
"Yus, Dana lee-sunnz," she said, her smile beginning to disappear.
"...they are offering a reward of one-hundred thousand gold pieces for people to help them find you."
"Hmm?" she replied blandly. "Dat no's da lot."
"It is for some people, Lucius said in a whisper, biting his lower lip. "I want to help, but I need to know what happened. This -is- serious."
"Dana no's likez all dem elfies in da port, Dana tinkz dem hearz da home haff da bad ting dem go's home," she answered, her tone one of rational explanation.
Lucius nodded silently, staring at the water for a moment before asking another question in a hoarse voice. "So...what happened?"
"Dana set Sparky on somm dem," she replied, Sparky being the name she had given to the fire elemental she summoned from time to time.
Lucius' legs went weak and he wobbled then, Dana helping him to sit beside the springs. He had hoped against hope that she would say Camthalion had possessed her, that she'd killed a deer and they'd attacked her, that the Sslissayath had told her to do it. Something, anything, other than what she did say. She'd killed elves in Ferein to get elves to leave Port Royale.
They spoke more for a time, Lucius trying to establish some chronology of exactly what happened, and trying to figure out what to do next. He and Jessup had already agreed that the first thing to do was to talk to Dana and Ophelia and find out the truth. Lucius had done that. They hadn't established the next thing to do, but Lucius felt that he should get Dana far from M'Gok Tukar, since that was the last place they were seen. He and Dana agreed that they would travel invisibly to the PAJWT offices when Ophelia ran up, panting, her face scratched and scabby.
"Hullo's da Ophelia," Dana said, smiling to her friend. "Haff da gud runz?"
Coughing, Ophelia began a reply that was quickly cut off by Lucius. "Yes...well..."
Lucius whispered quickly to Ophelia. He was offering her an escape, but she'd need to take it now. "We are going to Port. To Jessup."
Ophelia looked back, eyes like a deer's mesmerized by a hunter's bow. "Will he help us?" she whispered.
"Meetah Jessup da orclun," Dana said, as though that was answer enough.
Lucius merely nodded and whispered. "Yes, he'll help."
Dana then suggested that she could simply tell the elves that Sparky went mad and killed their brethren, which caused Lucius and Ophelia to look at her dumfounded for a time, before returning to the topic of how to get back to Port Royale undetected.
In response to Ophelia's continuing uncertainty about Jessup, Lucius replied to her in a firm whisper. "Jessup will find a way out."
"Are you sure?" Ophelia asked, her eyes on the road she had run up. "We don't want to bring this to Jessup ... won't he be mad?"
Coughing weakly, and looking to Ophelia regretfully, Lucius slowly replied. "I've already spoken to Jessup. He is loyal to his friends...as am I."
A gentle nod in reply and a quiet whisper came from Ophelia's large, tusked mouth. "Alright..lets go..I feel I am being followed."
And so they ran, under the magical enchantments to stay hidden and to run quickly, all the way from Icy Vale to Port Royale, stopping only briefly to eat rations and replenish their enchantments, Dana and Ophelia avoiding combat and Lucius killing the creatures that could detect those that are invisible. Lucius looked forward the whole way. Ophelia looked back, ever fearful that she was being followed. Dana seemed to simply enjoy the run.
After a long run, Lucius, panting, wheezing, and holding his side, led Dana and Ophelia up the stairs to the second floor of the PAJWT building. He and Ophelia, who had made the run wearing full armour, continued to pant heavily for fifteen minutes after while Dana admired her surroundings.
"Whurr meetah Jessupz?" she asked, in a tone that implied that after a five minute discussion with the orc, she'd leave this near house-arrest and go back to living her life as normal.
"I don't know," Lucius replied breathlessly, "but he'll be back eventually."
"Da Ophelia gud, yus?" Dana asked, perhaps hoping the orc would be in better spirits than Lucius.
"Am I good?" she replied, incredulous. "What kind of question is that? We are wanted for murder with a bounty on our head Dana! How can we be good!!??"
Dana simply shrugged and answered in that same nonchalant tone. "Dana gud." She then walked over to Lucius as he straightened, putting her arm around him.
Pushing Dana away, Lucius looked to Ophelia, who was now punching a metal door. "Ophelia, save it," he said to the upset orc.
As an addendum to her assertion that she was good, or perhaps as a clarification, Dana stated. "Dana hongry."
Ophelia lowered her head in a mix of sadness and exasperation, placing her bloodied knuckles against the door, as Lucius turned an unfocused, far-off gaze to Dana. "Murder is serious, Dana," he said evenly, "to me, and to the elves."
"Dana no murders enntink," she replied, her stomach growling, then looked around at her surroundings again. "Muss stayz da shop?"
Lucius nodded. "When he returns, we need to talk to Jessup...and I'm sure Sam has some leftovers around from the last meal he made."
Ophelia collapsed against the wall, her arm over her face.
"If you go out on the streets," Lucius replied quietly and patiently, "people will be looking to get their gold from the elves. Or maybe, perish the thought, they might simply be interested in bringing two murderers to justice."
"Tink dem hate Dana dat bad?" Dana asked, puzzled.
Staring at the floor, Lucius replied. "Yeah, Dana, I do."
She dismissed his answer as if he was a ninny worrying about a scratch becoming infected. "Pfft ............. Dana giff dem all da gud tings."
"Everyone in PR?" Lucius asked, irritation creeping into his voice.
"Mos dem pusson, yus," Dana replied proudly.
"Betty? Candy? Bald Rick? Berens? Zig? Omiga? Margaret? Esteban?" Lucius listed names, hoping Dana might see an enemy among one of them.
"Dem not no's Dana name," she said smugly.
"No, you can't possibly believe every last one of them is going to ignore you...and Ulalume, Rosen, Cedrych, Talion...they all know your name, and your face," he replied, his irritation continuing to grow.
After briefly discussing the security of their current quarters with Ophelia, Lucius backed away a few paces.
"Look, I need to go," he said flatly, wanting to get as far from the monster he'd been sharing a bed with as possible. "This, I think, is a safe place."
"Dana muss stayz?" the monster asked, in a sweet, imploring tone.
Lucius looked back, his mouth open for a long time without sound escaping. "Yeah, you must stay," he replied hoarsely.
"Dana wuntz comm da Lucius," she said, in a voice reminiscent of a daughter asking her father for a candy treat.
Lucius looked back, losing his composure for the first time. "I didn't -want- you to kill six elves!" he yelled. "I don't give a shite what -you- want right now!"
"Sparky killz dem," Dana quickly interjected, as though this assertion would absolve her of all responsibility for the crime that had brought on Lucius' ire.
As Ophelia looked down at her lap, Dana blinked at Lucius and asked a simple question, confusion showing in her eyes, and a glimmering of upset, as though the gravity of her crime had just set in. It wasn't that she had murdered six sentient beings in cold blood. It was something more important to her. "Lucius mad at Dana?"
"Mad, sad, and sick," he snapped. "Yes. I don't know why, but I had hoped you'd never do something like this. I was wrong."
Anger now boiling, Lucius turned on Ophelia. "And you. You just blindly went along?"
Ophelia didn't reply. She just stayed quiet with her head hung between her legs, though that didn't stop Lucius' verbal barrage.
"Killing 'elfies' is good sport for the orcluns?" he asked, furious and red-faced.
"Yeah," Dana replied, a thought occuring to her. Justification. "Chiefie sayz dat."
"The chief also told you to marry Karkus," Lucius fumed, beginning to storm away. "He's an a$!"
****************************************************************************
Lucius left the public washrooms feeling empty. Empty of all he had eaten in the last two days, emptied of tears, and devoid of anything recognizable as a soul. He walked into the Broken Mask, sat down, and penned a reply to the letter he had been carrying with him all day.
Dear Ulalume,
I respect your opinions, and respect your need to bring criminals to justice. You are a paladin. It's what you do. Sometimes I believe people think that I discount opinions that I disagree with, or discount the person holding such opinions as being irrational or somehow unworthy.
I have on too many occasions brought up the fact that paladins followed Vidus Khain even after he commited atrocities, yourself among them. I'm not trying to re-injure old wounds, only, perhaps, to offer some threadbare justification for my own actions. I suspect that the lot of you continued to follow Vidus not because you thought he was a kind and decent leader, but at least in part because you couldn't stomach the notion of turning on your friends, of assaulting a city that would be defended by people you loved. You didn't want to see your friends die at your sword-point.
The last time the elves held a public trial it took them a bare few hours to pass judgement and then publicly execute the perpetrators of the crime. I will never ask Dana to submit herself to such "justice", and I will fight their attempts to do so with every ounce of my being.
My sincere apologies that it has to be this way.
Yours very truly,
Lucius
Lucius' hand hovered over the Illumine Alliance mailbox across from the Four Winds Inn for what seemed an eternity before he finally dropped the letter in, irrevocably sending the message.
He then left in search of Jessup.
((My hat goes off to those of you that actually plow through and read all this. It's longer than I thought it would be. Also, I took a few liberties with what I thought Dana was likely thinking. Vulpina will no doubt tell me if I'm wrong )) |

Ulalume walked along the Asashi coastline, relishing the salt air. She had always loved the sea. It reminded her of carefree days spent playing ragball on the lawns of the Isle of Midoran, a thousand souls all dedicated to the same purpose around her. It was a feeling of... home.
She checked the mailbox habitually, pausing for just a moment as she walked up the steps. There was nothing ever in it, but like an entrepreneur refusing to give up on a failing business, she was certain that sooner or later people would come asking them for help. Checking the mail had become a ritual of hope. When she felt the parchment inside, she looked at the mailbox with mild surprise and anticipation. Was this it?
Upon seeing Lucius' careful script, she walked slowly into the Villa, ignoring the animated faces of the guardian sphynxes as they scrutinized her. She walked numbly past Darius Illumini, the resident wizard, and up the stairs to her small corner cell. She walked in, closed the door, and sat down on the small stool. Only then did she break the seal and read the letter.
Of course. Although she had prayed it would not come to this, of course there could have been no other response. She knew that Lucius loved Dana. Would she have done any different? Her eyes found the ceiling and she knew that, in most circumstances, even if it tore her up inside, she would try to bring a murderer in. Perhaps that was the difference between she and Lucius... perhaps they weren't meant to be close.
Then she wondered... what if it were Cedrych? Rosen? Karlina? What about the man for whom feelings had started to bloom in her bosom like dogwood in springtime, feelings she had sought desperately to quash... then? She closed her eyes.
She couldn't find fault with Lucius. She knew that he did what he had to do, and that she must now do what she had to do. She crumpled the note in her hand, her arm falling to her side, and wept softly. |

WANTED FOR MURDER?!?! Posted: 22 Aug 2006 04:56 PM |
A couple of Midorans are overheard bantering, as the cloaked half-elf walks by. Despite permissions temporarily granted, he was still trying to be inconspicuous. Sure, he had a visa, but being legally permitted doesn't mean that Midorans like it any better. One false move and they may find some legal reason to persecute him. His visit had been perpetuated by a constant nagging fear that this may be his LAST visit to the "white" city.
The two humans, apparently a woman running an errand for her husband's mercantile and a poorer woman spoke something of an attack on Ferien. "They got what they deserves, if ye asks me," one middle aged woman says.
"It's too Bad this Dana, and Ophelia didn't finish the job and kill all them bloody 'fair folk'," the other replies in a gruff commoner's accent, nodding in agreement all the while.
How could it be? He had just been in the Latonei Lodge earlier that morning. He had rested by those same archers and shared some words and cooked meat as he rested after exploring the nearby mines earlier. After the other hardships of the day, this only added insult to his injury. Due to the elves' beliefs about the cycle, those same archers he would never know again. Maybe different elves will take the post, but the elven woman with the beautiful eyes who stood by the fire and complimented him on his tailoring done to his new armour... he would never know her again. And was Strand okay? Kalannar had spent the last few days in his lodge awaiting Ferien's response to his request for protection.
But that wasn't the worst of it.
It was his two friends who were being accused. First Fat Sam had dumped the news on him that Dana ate his finger, even though Lou and her both still denied it. Sam even had said that she wanted to eat his whole hand, and she had requested his hand should he get a prosthetic... But to think that she attacked and killed innocent elves? And OPHIE! After having shared the curse together, they had grown close in their trying to find release. Now they finally had some semblance of liberty and THIS happens? What was she thinking? Was it perhaps somehow curse induced? Would he suffer similar attacks of insanity? WHY?! Why? ... why..?
He returned tot he infirmary to check on the three human's progress feeling dizzy, sad and sick. He would need to deal with the matter at hand first. But even before he could check on their progress, he needed rest... He lay on the floor of the infirmary for some time, just staring at the ceiling, without a word, feeling the knotting in his chest and stomache. He wanted to cry, or scream, or do... something! All he was able to do at this point was wait for the humans to be tended to... and try to gather his wits about him again. |

Helena stood at the edge of Ferein, collecting willow branches. She'd heard the whispers. Wil told her, knowing her great respect for the Fair Ones as the First Born of the Mother. It wasn't that Helena didn't care, of course but...
.. the choices of the living were beyond her domain. All were part of the Cycle. She didn't like it, of course, and Helena had wept softly for the loss. Their deaths had been horrific, and in such ways were spirits made restless. The Rangers had not been ready to die. Their souls would not know peace, and Helena would be called upon to see them again as sad, mindless whisps of anger. She would need slay them, and the waste would be intolerable.
Not all murders were so. Perhaps their spirits would find solace in the Hereafter. It wasn't for Helena to decide. Still, if such was to be, then Helena would not argue. It was her place. It was her pirce.
Life to the living. Death to the dead. That was Helena.
She waited at the edge of the Gladden hills, below the troll-infested cliffs, to wait. And see. And pray. |

Re: WANTED FOR MURDER Posted: 23 Aug 2006 11:30 AM |
Lucius stayed not far from the PAJWT offices for most of the day, waiting for Jessup to return. He couldn't bring himself to go inside and face Dana and Ophelia. He couldn't bring himself to look at Dana. He also thought about what he would want to do to someone who killed her. He hoped the elves were more forgiving than he would be.
After Lucius had made a brief stop at the Broken Mask, he once more went to the PAJWT offices and found Jessup in the cellar. Jessup had just returned and didn't realize Dana and Ophelia were upstairs, so he accompanied Lucius to the second floor and the four of them began talking about the situation.
Most of what Dana said irritated Lucius. She didn't care that she'd killed six elves. She barely cared about the consequences, either, seeming to think that she could slaughter an army of attacking elves, seeming to think that they would somehow deserve it. Her first words to Jessup were that she was bored and hungry. How the orc simply smiled at her as she spoke, and replied calmly and patiently, was at first puzzling to Lucius, until it dawned on him that Jessup probably didn't care that six elves were dead either, aside from the fact that the murders put two friends in danger.
Jessup outlined three options, the same three options that had percolated through Lucius' head since he'd heard the news. The first was that Dana and Ophelia simply hide out at PAJWT indefinitely. They would be safe from the elves there, though it wasn’t much of a life to a couple of hot-blooded adventurers. The second option was that they take their chances and go on with life as usual, an option that Dana seemed to favour, since she seemed to believe she could “kill any elfies that came after her”. The third option was to negotiate – to offer the elves a deal that would give them a great deal more than what they would gain by simply trying and executing Dana and Ophelia, yet offer something that could be described as justice, if not vengeance. After a short discussion, it was decided this was really the only option. Turning themselves over to face elven justice, without any deal, was, initially, not considered.
The only thing Jessup could think of was to offer to hunt down the rogue mage Camthalion, a phenomenally dangerous proposition in and of itself, and one which might carry with it the same death sentence Dana and Ophelia were likely to receive anyway. Still, a small chance of survival beat none at all, and the four agreed this would be a component of the offer that would be made. Lucius also said that they must give the facts of the case to the elves. The truth, horrifying as it was, needed to be told. This is part of the process of facing trial, and shouldn’t be short-circuited by any pre-emptive agreements. Dana and Ophelia agreed, and told their tale.
Lucius was alternatively angry and sickened as the tale was related to him. Dana had come up with the idea of attacking Ferein so that all the elves congregating in Port Royale would pull up stakes and move back to protect their homeland. Her plan was for she and Ophelia to move against the archers in Latonei Forest invisibly, and then send Sparky, the fire elemental that she commanded, against them, so that no witnesses actually saw Dana or Ophelia. Ophelia balked at this plan, so Dana took her to see Chief Borogask (who Lucius now referred to simply as ‘that jackass’), whence the Chief gave his blessing for the raid, convincing Ophelia to take part. The plan went as planned, except that Dana and Ophelia were somehow seen and heard by a witness to the crime.
It was, at the time, agreed that it would be inflammatory and dangerous to tell the elves of the Chief’s involvement, and Ophelia in any event asserted that the decision to join the raid was hers and hers alone, irrespective of the Chief’s blessing.
Throughout this discussion, Dana continued to make vitriolic comments about elves and to talk about killing them with the same relish that most reserve for ridding their households of vermin. Lucius finally looked to Dana and said that he needed a promise from her if he was going to help. He needed her to promise to never again attack a creature or being that was peaceful towards her. The same promise was extracted from Ophelia, though it seemed to pain her less than Dana to do so. The promise, however, got Lucius to thinking. If the elves could be convinced that Dana and Ophelia would live by that promise, might it be in their interests to collar them now, and save the world from any further attacks they might make?
Lucius looked over to Jessup. “Could a geas be applied compelling them to live by this promise?” he asked.
Jessup blinked, not following the rationale for applying a geas. “It bez a dangerouz hardz ting ta do,” he replied, looking puzzled.
“Lucius not truss Dana wurdz?” Dana asked angrily, getting to her feet.
Lucius continued looking at Jessup, seeking further clarification, and ignored Dana. She continued to say things that made him question why he was trying so hard to preserve her life, so he just tried to ignore her hateful barrage of invective against elves. Finally, when Jessup agreed that such a geas should be possible, Lucius turned his attention back to Dana. “Whether I believe you doesn’t matter, Dana. The elves aren’t going to believe a murderer.”
Those words caused Ophelia to sigh and bury her head in her hands, and caused Dana to say something to Jessup in orcish and storm down the stairs. Jessup’s visage took on a surprised look and a certain urgency replaced the relaxed, slow drawl of his speech.
“Ya muz ztop herz, Mizta Edmondz,” he said quickly. “Zhe iz goin ta Fereinz!”
Lucius looked at Jessup angrily for a moment, trying to shrug nonchalantly. Part of him wanted to say he didn’t want to help someone who seemed to act like she didn’t want helping, who was proud of her crime, and who seemed ready to go commit another. Love, however, is blind. He soon ran after her, beating her to the boat by paying Jusin an extra hundred gold to get his ox moving at a gallop.
An argument between Dana and Lucius ensued on the coast near the boat, with Jessup and Ophelia eventually catching up on foot. Dana’s plan was to turn herself over to the elves and either face their court or kill them all. Afterwards, Lucius truly wasn’t sure which, since her mood seemed to slip between the two. She would accept a geas, if it wasn’t put on her by some “elfie mage”, and “would neffer, effer apologize to those elfies.” Lucius, exasperated, but also tired, simply left that battle for later. He thought it unlikely the elves would consider his request anyway. If they did demand an apology from Dana, he would fight the battle to convince her to give one another time. After seeing Dana, Jessup and Ophelia safely back to the PAJWT offices, Lucius proceeded to the Broken Mask to write a letter.
When it was finished, he stared at it for a long time. A single tear tracked down his right cheek and his lip quivered as he read and re-read it. ‘Half truths and a complete lack of contrition,’ he said quietly to himself. ‘She committed an atrocity and I am making a business transaction.’ Finally, his lips stiffening and his nostrils flaring, he ripped the page in half and re-wrote the letter. When it was finished, he stared at it with a grim smile.
‘Truth,’ he said quietly to himself, ‘untainted by prejudice, fear, or my desire to protect Dana and prevent warfare. I don’t have it in me to give them justice, but the families of the dead elves deserve, at the very least, truth.’
Lucius then made his way to the forest realm, wandering the confusing landscape alone, trying to be as unobtrusive as possible. After a great deal of searching, he found Tel’Ilmela, and delivered his letter to Eowarer, Captain of the Guard, asking that it be passed on to the council.
He then returned to the bench outside the tower and waited. Evening was deepening, and Lucius knew he’d not be hearing back from the elves for some time. Though he tried mightily to stay awake, his ugly, unshaven form eventually slumped to the side and was taken by the shadows of sleep, shadows that haunted Lucius with nightmares of women with delicate features being burned alive. |

Eowarar watched the human leave the tower and gazed down at the sealed letter in his hand, wondering briefly what it contained.
Information? Possibly, though the mage had made no mention of the reward. He turned to his desk and gathered up the other reports from the patrols, one or two witness statements that had been gathered by the archers searching for the criminals and an additional letter or two and carried them along the corridor to the Council Chamber.
As he passed along the corridor he could feel it, see it in the eyes of the guards who otherwise looked no different from their usual alert selves. The same feelings he was experiencing himself, the same feelings he had no doubt were being experienced by all within Ferein at the moment, particularly by those who had seen the bodies, or those who had lost a family member, a friend, a loved one.
Shock, anger, grief, dismay.
But there was one feeling which in the last few days had become more and more apparent, seen in particular in the faces of those embarking upon the search for the murderes.
Determination, a burning determination to complete this task, to not rest until these two were captured. Seen in the eyes and bearing now of every archer or warrior who left through Mystic Wood or boarded a boat on the lake shore.
He knocked lightly at the door to the chamber and pushed the door open, glanced briefly at the three faces that turned his way, bowed and placed the papers on the table.
As he turned to leave and walked once more towards the door he experienced a new feeling, one of comfort, relief.
Because the same feeling he had seen reflected in the eyes of everyone else in Ferein were just as apparent in the three he had just seen. |

The door closed almost silently as Eowarar left the chamber, and Sairalindë's eyes fell to the small sheaf of papers he had left, sorting through them she read them one by one and passed them to the others.
"Some useless, some at least giving some information about these... these two," she said, reaching for the letter. "This information about the Exile, is it true?"
She turned towards Elvalia, who had been reading through the statement taken by Aeladhrial in Buckshire. The younger Elf's green eyes focused on her briefly and her face contorted in a slight grimace, "Ignore it, your Highness, I will deal with him."
Sairalindë broke the seal on Lucius' letter and read it in silence. She slumped in her chair slightly as she finished and glanced briefly at Elvalia and Nariel. "It is from a human, by the name of Lucius Edmonds. Apparently he has some connection to this... Dana. I shall read it."
"Princess Sairalindë and the Council of Ferein
Dear sirs/madams:
I am writing this letter in response to your request for information leading to the apprehension of Dana and Ophelia. I come as a concerned friend of both of them, and you may judge my words in that light. My primary interest is in seeing them live, selfish as that may sound in light of the murder of six of your own.
First, however, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences for the deaths of your brethren. No words will bring them back, and any that I offer are likely tainted in your eyes by my association with Dana and Ophelia. I am sickened that someone I care about would do such a thing, and would probably cry out for revenge if my loved ones were murdered.
It was murder. Cold, pre-meditated murder, with no mitigating circumstances. The first thing I give to you is a precise accounting of what happened, as related to me by Dana and Ophelia. (For the benefit of the council’s record keeper, neither of the women take a second name. They are simply known as Dana and Ophelia.)
It was Dana’s idea to attack the elves in Ferein; her motive, if one can call it that, was to get the elves that have recently been congregating in Port Royale to return to Ferein. She believed that they would move to protect their homeland if they perceived it was in danger. She has a deep and abiding prejudice against the elven race that, as is obvious, knows no bounds.
Ophelia was initially opposed to the attack. Though she is in my opinion an impressionable and somewhat naïve young woman, she still stood against Dana. She felt that the killing of the elves was wrong, and still does. Her guilt and sorrow over what has happened are plainly obvious to me.
Because of Ophelia’s reluctance to go along with her plan, Dana suggested they go to Chief Borogask of M’Gok Tukar and obtain his blessing for the attack. After he gave his blessing, Ophelia agreed to take part.
Please understand something of the nature of half-orc society here. Women in their society are subservient to men, and all are subservient to the Chief. In my opinion, when the Chief gave his blessing for the attack, Ophelia interpreted it to mean that he was expecting her to take part, and that she reluctantly did.
Ophelia had asked me not to share this detail, and I suspect that if the Council interrogated Dana and Ophelia directly they would deny the Chief had any responsibility. The reason is simply that, at least in Ophelia’s case, she worries that the Council’s knowledge of the Chief’s involvement will bring further bloodshed, both to the orcs and to the elves. I, too, worry that I have made the wrong decision, but in the end I will put my trust in the value of truth over the value of a peace secured with a lie. A horrible wrong has been committed, and I can’t bring myself to withhold part of the story , whether it is for the ‘right reasons’ or not.
Dana and Ophelia left M’Gok Tukar after receiving the Chief’s blessing, and, once they reached Latonei Forest, they used magicks to appear invisible. Then Dana, a blood mage of some power, called upon the forces of fire and brought forth a powerful elemental to do her bidding. It was this elemental that, on Dana’s orders, attacked and killed the six elves that now lie in rest. Ophelia never struck a blow.
My own belief is that there were three culprits in this crime. Dana, Ophelia, and Chief Borogask. Of those three, Ophelia did little other than accompany Dana, and would not have done so if Chief Borogask hadn’t suggested so. I would ask the Council to offer her clemency on the basis that, though she was there, she did not participate in the attack, and is distraught with grief over the horrors of it.
Of the other two culprits, I can say little in their defense. Bringing Chief Borogask to justice would, of course, create tensions between Ferein and M’Gok Tukar. ((OOC - REMAINDER OF THIS PARAGRAPH OMITTED AT REQUEST OF ROBBER BARRON))
Of Dana, I can offer no vengeance to you. Though her act was one of wanton evil, I do not offer to bring her to you to face judgement. If I did, she would offer no apology. She does not regret her crime for the evil of it, only for the consequences it brings to her. I know that she will face death if Dana is tried, and, may Theus forgive me, I cannot bring her before you to face death. I offer alternatives, and hope that you will see beyond the need for justice, and see instead to stop further bloodshed.
Firstly, I offer to have a geas put on Dana and Ophelia that would prevent them from attacking another innocent. The exact wording of the geas could be determined between us. Though Dana would not be rehabilitated in the conventional sense, she would be unable to ever commit such an atrocity again. I personally do not believe Ophelia would ever take part in such an act again, anyway, geas or no.
Secondly, I offer to commit all the resources at my disposal, Dana’s disposal, and Ophelia’s disposal to the capture or death of the rogue mage Camthalion. For my part, this includes one million gold, many boxes of adamantium and mithril ingots, various magical items, and, if necessary, my life. I cannot speak to what they are able to part with, but we are all seasoned adventurers who have accumulated many things that would help in the fight. Though this offer has the stain of blood money on it, and it troubles me to write it, it is the only restitution I can think of.
I have little more to offer. Taking Dana by force will bring bloodshed. Instead of having the deaths of six elves on her hands, she may have the deaths of ten or twenty. Please, I implore you, don’t bring it to that. In order to save her from possession by the underground lizard race of the Sslissayath, Dana was forced to accept the blessing of Gruin, which keeps her inner beast always close to the surface. She would rather fight than negotiate, and will simply kill all the elves that come after her, until she, herself is exhausted and dead. Justice for the six dead elves cannot come with the price of more death, can it?
Yours truly,
Lucius Edmonds"
She finished and the room fell silent.
Nariel broke the mood, her quiet, almost whispering voice sounding unnaturally loud, "No deals," she said, "they should be punished for this. How can we be seen to execute Tarikians for the massacre in Paws then come to some... arrangement over a mindless attack on our own? What message would that send to our people, not least the families of those killed? That we place a higher weight on the deaths of those unknown to us? I say no... we continue what we have begun."
The silence fell once more, Sairalindë running Nariel's words through her head and, somewhat to her own dismay, finding no argumant with them.
She turned at last to the youngest occupant of the room, "Elvalia?"
The Elf's head lifted and regarded each of them silently for a few moments, then she simply shook her head.
"So be it," said Sairalindë, "we continue. I will draft a reply more fully to this Edmonds fellow. In the meanwhile I want more people out looking, questioning. I want these murderers found. Increase the reward also, we will see these two brought to justice." |

To Lucius Edmonds
Mister Edmonds
Your concern for your friends does you credit as does your expression of condolence, unfortunately you seem to have misread the mood of the people and Council of Ferein.
No condolence however heartfelt, no offer of resources, gold or services, will replace the lives which were so cruelly ended by your friends. Ferein seeks justice, nothing more, nothing less. Justice we will have by whatever means.
We are not barbarians, we do not seek the deaths of the perpetrators, but their capture.
Their capture and subsequent transportation to Ferein for trial.
To the two perpetrators we say this, give yourselves up. We will not rest until you are found nor are we likely to forget with the passage of time. We will find you by whatever means necessary. Surrender yourselves to judgement within Ferein and you will be accorded a trial which is fair and represented by defences of your own choice.
You cannot hide forever.

The guard walked up beside Lucius unheard and stood at his side for a moment before clearing his throat and handing over the letter bearing the wax seal of the princess. Lucius nodded his thanks and watched as the guard returned to the tower, striding purposefully and gracefully through the open doors to Tel'Ilmela.
He then looked down at the letter in his hand, tearing at the parchment rather than using a dagger to break the seal. Who knew how jumpy the elves might be around a friend of Dana's, he thought bitterly.
He read through the letter only once, his inner voice digesting each syllable and committing it to memory.
There was no way out. The elves wanted a trial, and only a trial. Of course they did. He gathered his things together and rose to make the journey back to Port Royale. He didn't know what to say to Dana and Ophelia. He didn't know what to do, other than deliver the message, and he might, in fact, be followed while doing that, though Lucius found it hard to believe that all of Port didn't know Dana and Ophelia were holed up at PAJWT. The orc Guk Necksqueezer had seen them there.
As he waited for the barge to take him to Valien Sensei's boat, Lucius noticed an elf posting a new message on the notice board. He walked over and read it, and, though he had thought he couldn't feel more empty inside, he felt his stomach twist into a tight knot. The reward was being increased.
Lucius had made matters worse, not better.
He lowered his eyes to the ground in front of the sign for a moment, and then simply turned and followed his feet to the barge. The trip from barge to ship, from ship to barge, and from barge to the Buckshire Docks was uneventful. Lucius neither ate nor slept, instead splitting his time between penning two letters and staring aimlessly over the side.
Once in Port Royale, Lucius went directly to PAJWT. He walked upstairs and slipped three notes under Jessup's door, one being the Princess' reply, another in his own hand addressed to Jessup, and another in his own hand addressed to Dana.
Lucius then quietly left PAJWT and went to his room at the Broken Mask. He walked past the host of elven guards standing outside his door and entered his room. Though he had expected one to stop him, none did, and he surmised they had descriptions of the women they were looking for, not him. He removed his belongings from the chest and left.
There was nothing more for him to do, and he had no wisdom, no insight, nothing but his own conflicted feelings to guide him. They had never served him well in the past, and likely never would in the future. He would go somewhere, but not to PAJWT. |

The archer ran swiftly up the hill from the dock having caught the first available boat from the Port. Barely pausing to acknowledge the warriors he strode rapidly through the path of Aros and hurriedly up the stone carved steps.
Catching sight of the small figure near the pool he came to a halt, panting and attempting to regain his breath.
She stood slowly, her movements economical; graceful; seemingly just one fluid motion.
"Well?" She asked softly, the deep green eyes studying his face from beneath the locks of blonde hair that had fallen forward.
"It is true my lady..." gasped the archer, "The letter spoke truly. I followed the human there, he delivered three letters then retired to the room they share at the tavern."
"You were not seen?"
The archer shook his head, "Our people are already surrounding the building."
Her voice sank almost to a whisper, "Good, send word to the Grove and lady Nariel, to Aeladhrial in the Port and have someone go also to Tel'Elena. I want everyone available nearby as soon as possible."
"Aala," the archer bowed, "at once."
He turned to run away but stopped as he heard her voice call from behind.
This time the tension in her face was gone, as she smiled, "You did well, now make sure they are brought back."
He smiled in return, and with a final nod, ran off. |

Re: WANTED FOR MURDER Posted: 24 Aug 2006 02:29 PM |
Ulalume walked slowly down the dock.
She knew he would never believe her, but she felt nothing but sorrow after informing the Ferein Council where they could find Dana. No smugness from doing the right thing, no pride in helping to apprehend a murderer, no flush of victory for finally getting the best of a woman who had publicly called her "whore" and "bitch". Truth be told, she had just taken information from Rosen, thought about what she already knew of Dana's habits and past behavior, and extrapolated the obvious. She would make sure that Rosen got her proper credit when the time came.
No, she felt the deepest, most agonizing sorrow for Lucius, the poor man whose only crime had been trying to protect the one he loved. True, she had always warned him about associating with the wrong element. She had told him it was only a matter of time before Dana harmed innocents. Her heart had broken while she watched him pull away from her and gravitate towards this maniacal mass of bodily functions and profanities.
She didn't even really blame Dana anymore. She had realized long ago where the true fault lay: in the orcs who killed her family and raised her as one of their own. They had taken a perfectly normal, beautiful Midoran child and warped her to the point where she hated her own people above everything else in the world. Dana could have been a dressmaker, or a baker's wife, or a minstrel - she could have lived her life out in peace and happiness, raised a family, and died an old woman. Instead, her life was now wasted, a sad vortex of pain and anger and violence that threatened to pull Lucius down to the depths.
Not that this whole episode had left her unscathed. She had had her home destroyed by Midoran, and most of what she knew as family and comerades killed. That wound was something she would bear for the rest of her life, but it had finally begun to heal. The Villa, Cedrych and Rosen - they had started the healing process for her, made her feel like her old self again. Now, this whole mess of loyalties and principles had torn away the scab that had formed and left her soft insides exposed to the harsh truth that none of it had been real. Those she had considered comerades and friends had deserted her faster than Sywyn on a cup of Cafe Del Mar's finest. Their order, something that seemed so bright and full of promise just a couple of short days ago, had failed to last a single test of discord. It had shattered like flawed crystal, and she was left once again alone in the world, without a single person she trusted.
She felt the cool sea breeze in her hair as the ship pulled close to the Buckshire coastline. The crew brought the launch boat alongside, and she climbed slowly down the rope ladder that hugged the ship in the gently tossing waves. There was an old Midoran proverb about reaping what you sow - it was a common enough theme among the clergy, something to justify the ill treatment of sinners. There was another side of it that was mostly overlooked, however - when in need, providing for others comes back to the giver. Offer comfort, and you would be comforted - give food, and you would never go hungry - be a source of understanding, and you would be understood. She would not say a harsh word to him. She would not judge him. All she knew was, she must find him and offer her deepest condolences. She must embrace him and listen and understand. If there was one person in all of Vives who needed a friend right now more than she did, it was Lucius Edmonds. |

Re: WANTED FOR MURDER Posted: 24 Aug 2006 07:25 PM |
The following is the text of Lucius' letter to Jessup:
Dear Jessup:
I have slipped three letters under your door. The one that is opened is Ferein's response to my letter to them; please give the one I have addressed to Dana to her, and I presume you are presently reading this one.
As you can see, the princess and the council rejected my offer. Not only that, but they have increased the reward offered for the arrest of Dana and Ophelia. My intervention has made matters worse for both of them. I gave a thorough accounting of the circumstances of the attack, including Chief Borogask's involvement. The truth is that the Chief matters little more to me than a rabid dog. If giving him up to the elves would have saved Dana, it was worth it to me. It won't.
So presently the elves have what amounts to a confession delivered by me, and I see no way out for Dana and Ophelia now. Perhaps I just don't consider all the possibilities you might.
I am leaving Port Royale until this matter has been resolved. The elves now know my relationship to Dana and Ophelia, and I don't feel anything will be accomplished by me being anywhere near them. In any event, I find I can't think clearly; Dana and Ophelia will have to determine their own fates; perhaps they will take your counsel in their choices, and perhaps they won't. At this juncture I trust your counsel more than my own.
If I need to be reached, place an advertisement in the PR Tribune mentioning 'ravens, staves, and gnomes'.
You have my sincere thanks for this.
Yours truly,
Lucius |

Re: WANTED FOR MURDER Posted: 24 Aug 2006 10:23 PM |
The Safe House.
Ophelia sits at the foot of the bed inside her temporary room Inside PAJWT, where she was brought by Lucius and Dana. She hasn’t really realized her incredible luck that in running blindly from the murder scene she got turned around and ended up running in a large circle. The circle ended up at the Icy Vale hot springs where Dana and Lucius just happened to be. In the last couple of days she hasn’t left the room other than once leaving the building to go running after Dana. She has befriended a couple of the prostitutes. They come play cards with her during their down times. She doesn’t know if they like her because they pity her or because they keep taking her money. The rest of the time she lies in bed staring at the wall and thinking. She barely eats the wonderful food cooked by Mr. Sam. She tries to thank him every time by giving him a big kiss on the cheek, which for some reason he never accepts. The extra food she feeds to the sheep that have begun to congregate around her door during meal time. The images of that fateful morning come and go. She can keep them at bay during the day but the nighttime is the worst. Nightmares of a field of burning elf bodies reflected in a beautiful elf woman’s deep blue eyes. She wakes up at least 3 times a night with this nightmare, leaving her room for a glass of water or to pet a sheep till she can get back to sleep.
With a mind of a child and experiencing such a horrific ordeal, having so much time to think is a dangerous thing. Some deal with the situation with anger and lash out at everyone. Some become dangerously depressed. Some, as in Ophelia’s case, shut down their feelings because it hurts too much. Of course this isn’t new to Ophelia; this is how she coped after waking up 6 months ago at the Four Winds Inn with no memory. As dreams of her past as a pit fighting slave slowly crept to the surface just to be shut down, repressed, again and again. The ordeal with Desth’des and the fear and pain, shut down. The loneliness of knowing that she is truly alone and being abandoned by her people to the elves, repressed. Her father, nowhere to be found and probably dead by the hands of Desth’des, shut down. And so this is what will happen again. She will repress the memory. All of these memories. The endless bloodshed that fills her life. The thousands of things that have died by her sword. Bottled up and put in a jar that is Ophelia’s memory and being. There this pain will implant itself and it will grow and slowly destroy every ounce of humanity she once had. And what will be left is a mindless weapon.
In the dark recesses of Ophelia’s mind she realizes this. So, inside she wishes to be found. To confess her sins and receive her punishment. Because somewhere she understands what will happen if she doesn’t. |

Solus Combed the Notice.
"Wanted for..hrmm...Murder.."
And so more bodies hit the ground, and a cycle continues of life and death. Who cares, thought Solus. Elves life an unnatural amount of time, death only comes to them in so few ways - so why not at the hands of another. Make it all natural again. |

*the following letter is delivered to Ferein by a disheveled-looking woman, her hair riddled with twigs and her eyes red and puffy from crying and the lack of sleep*
To the Council
I don't know whether writing this letter will make any difference but I owe this to Dana, even if a part of me is relieved to know she has been captured. What she did was beyond awful, and I have no words to describe how sorry I am that it happened. I know how it feels to lose a loved one.
I am the first to admit that Dana is a bigot and a savage but you have to understand that she isn't all bad. Despite of all her faults, Dana is my friend. She has never been anything but good to me: protective, generous, loyal. She is not evil, she is just simple-minded and ignorant – like a lost child. She doesn't understand what she did is wrong and because of this I beg of you, punish her (she deserves it) but please spare her life. Show her that she is wrong and have mercy on her. Never allow her to enter Ferein again, and if she tries, kill her then. Not now, while we can still try to make her see that she has done wrong, and save the kind, caring person that I know. She needs guidance, and resorting to violence would only lower you to her level. You have the power to stop the killing.
