HOWTO: Rolling Skill Checks
Posted: 13 Oct 2003 09:02 PM
With so many new faces here, I thought it might be a good time to talk about some of the things you'll need to do when interacting with DMs during an event. These are mostly mechanical things, that you could be called upon to do either in an organized adventure or in a solo setting. This will be a series of short posts with very quick and concise info. Anybody who wishes to cover a topic is welcome.

Rolling Skill Checks
Occasionally you may be called upon, either publicly or privately, to roll a skill check. The most common way you'll see this is an unexpected voice nearby saying something like **SPOT CHECK** (the whole party should roll checks when they see this) or you might get a simple private tell to "Roll a wisdom check". The response can be anything from total failure to an important piece of information. Most likely it will come in the form of a "tell", so that you can RP out the results of your check.

To do this, you should "use" your PC Dicebag. This item is placed in the inventory of all new characters, and might be a handy thing to put on your quickbar. Once used, the dicebag will pop up a dialog asking you what you want to do. You can roll your check, and the DM will see the result of the roll. You don't need to tell anybody what the result of the roll is.

Dice rolls have two settings: Public and Private. Public checks are displayed to everybody nearby, and private checks are only visible to the player. In both cases, the DM sees the result.

That's about it... pretty simple. I hope this information is useful to some of you out there.

I really like this little feature.

It lets me take advantage of Fri'els massive persuade score, much to the annoyance of various people :P

I hit a 52 yesterday!

Is this the only time the **SPOT CHECK** message comes up? Or is there also an automated one?

The automated trigger/placeable/convo based ones doesn't tell you when they do the roll.

OK, well, when I was new here I ignored a DM once then. I had no idea what that message meant at that time. Oops. :)

Just thought I would turn this back on the DM's regarding what I recently found out about a DMFI wand we have access to. The DMFI DM Dicebag will allow us to 'force' a skill check on a PC or on all of the PC's in the area at once. There are several different reporting options available that you must set before you roll the check. The default is to send a PM of the check to the PC and of course show's on the DM channel. There are options which will only show the result to the DM's and one that will announce the results to all PC's in the area. This, and all the other DMFI wands can be created by using the DMFI exploder widget (Items->Custom->Misc->Tutorial) without having to create each wand seperatly.

Knew about this one... but I like for the players to roll their checks. ;)

This came up during last session of Vives-101.

Instead of looking through your inventory, you can also type *Strength check* *Persuade check* *Lore check* etc. to roll. Note that the attribute/skill in check must be Capitalized on the first letter (i.e., *Strength check*, not *strength check*)

One of the things I like the most about the dicebag, is that it is silent. If set on private and the DM says to roll check via "tell", there's no overt evidence that the PC is rolling a check... Kinda preserves the atmosphere a little bit. ;)
