Emotes and helms! Posted: 06 Oct 2003 01:26 PM |
well, there is something i have seen while playing around other worlds, and pretty sadly it happens around here as well..
I dont see how come a PC that wear a helm, that cover it's face should smile -and- inform others about that.. about *grinning* or maybe *frowning* allright.. there are helms that you can see thro the eye holes and see the emotes.. but i think someone with a pot helm, isnt suposed to write he is smiling..
maybe i am too strict about this or something.. or maybe i lost a point while looking at the so called 'problem'.
but people, when their emotes are not visible, shouldnt try to use them. so allright, you can write *smile to himself* or soemthing like that, which might help the atmosphere, but it is pretty annoying to try and think if this char is having a helmet or not, cuz usualy when i see that someone wrote an emote i take for granted that my char saw/hear the emote and usually react to that in certain way..
well i feel like mumbling again, so the bottom line - for realism IG.. dont use facial emotes while wearing a mask, or at list write them in a way that will be realistic (as said *smiles to himself*)
if someone thinks diffrently or agrees - you are most welcome to post what's on your mind here.

This is a great point, and one I have considered as well. Let's remember one thing though: Many helmets have face guards that can be lifted, allowing the wearer to communicate without removing the helm. I think this should be left to the helm wearer to RP...if we see a facial emote from a PC wearing a helm, we must assume that it has a face-guard that is raised.

aye, well.. IMO if someone wanna lift his face gaurd he would take off his helm. and i know there are many helms that might leave parts of the face visible - enough that the emotes will be seen. but many helms doesnt

OK...I don't want to be contrary, but taking an armored helm off is not like pulling off a baseball cap. The very reason face guards were put on helms was precisely because the wearer did not want to be removing/replacing his helm all the time... and when the helm is off, where would one place it? Under your arm? In your pack (with stag horns :-))? A hemet can be an unwieldly item. Wearing it is often the best option...hence the face guard.
That said, I want to reiterate that you point is a good one, and worthy of discussion.

well, in the middle of a fight or something of course you will only lift a part of your helmet, but when going to see ppl in the tavern or something, i guess you you would take your helm off (as most players do) but if they stay with it they shouldnt use emotes, or should say *lifting the face gaurd* or something the problem is that sometimes i see people putting on helms intending to hide themselves but they still use emotes.. i mean.. how effective is that disguise if they can see your mouth, eyes and err the seroundings? =p
and I guess that if people can put full plate armors in their bags, they can put a helm (that's a point to think about as well)

Well said.
You can NOT put full plate in your pack...which is why a PC should be walking around town in full armor unless he's been to an Inn, or someplace else he could have disrobed and stored the armor.
If a PC walks into an inn to sit and have a drink, he should not be wearing a helm (unless there is a good reason for it). I don't think this is what we're seeing in Vives. However, if a PC walks into Midor to buy some supplies from Billy Bob before heading back out of town, he may well leave his helmet on.
*lifting the faceguard* may have occured the moment he walked into town, long before entering into a dialogue with another PC.

| Unfortantly when Bioware made the helmet models they had them just replace the head models so there are no open-faced helmets. When I play a dwarf character though I can't imagine them hiding behind a face guard so I just pretend their helms are open-faced. I could imagine someone wearing an open-faced helm nearly everywhere too. |
I do what the voices in my head tell me too. |

I'd say that this is honestly an RP moot issue. Yes, Helms stop you emoting. But why does it matter?
It takes 2 hours to put on a suit of full plate, and you -have- to have help. It's fine in PnP, but do you -really- want to sit there RPing getting in or out of armor with help every time you want to leave the city?
Same with helms. Ignore what the screen shows you. The faceguards up, they took it off, it doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned.
All IMHO, as usual

| First of all, given the chance, Shaz'jen would wear a HOOD, not a helm :D Sadly, I'm limited to helms as I don't think we have the hoods hak in amongst the various Vives stuff. And well, with a hood, it would be reasonably easy to see certainly the movements a character made with his mouth...so, I RP it that way :) |

Re: Emotes and helms! Posted: 07 Oct 2003 08:21 AM |
well, I am not saying it is impposible to move the face gaurd.. or to 'pretend' to wear other type of helm.. I am saying that you should either - explain the current 'status' wehter the face are hidden or visible, or you can just stop using emotes! =p
cuz there -are- players wearing helms.. and they -are- hiding their face but they still use emotes.. that is the thing i want to stop..
also about straping armors.. i dont think (but maybe i am wrong) that you wear armors ontop of your normal clothes.. so i guess moving to the side for a second would be more reasonable then standing at the middle of a large city and start changing there..

Good point Dens..
I''ve started to wear a helm.. and I guess that I am one of the offenders. I will continue to use emotes... but change them to audio emotes... like *giggles* or *snickers* or something like that. That can contibute to the atmospher of rpling as much as a *smiles*.

Actually, you would wear something under the armor. Usually under a suit of plate would be a suit of chain, and then the equivilent of padded armor. And if you want to be a pain about the helmets, you could just take them off when your in town. I would hate to keep in that stifling hot air myself. I personally just don't wear them. My characters like to be *comfortable* generally speaking. And the whole thing on the plate mail, ya, you would need a bit of time to take off and put on the stuff, but think of it like this, I've clocked it to be about an IG hour to an OOC minute. So if you really want to be technical, shouldn't our characters move at insane speeds anyways? They're moving at a normal rate in an OOC minute so IG they're like turtles Just something that bugs me. :D
And the face gaurd thing, I wouldn't be too worried about it. We all have our RP flaws. (Except me :P)

| I like *smiles* even when wearing a helmet, it effects the tone of what you say, if I'm wearing a helm (which I very seldom do) I'd use *smiles under helm* so ya get that I'm happyish and perhaps might spy my smile from a small sliver or somethin. |

I think of it as a tone of voice as much as a visual. OK, it would be poorly written fiction, but typing:
I think we should visit the gypsies. *teasing grin*
is a whole lot shorter than typing:
*said in a humorously teasing tone of voice* I think we should visit the gypsies.
and therefore a whole lot likelier to get typed in a mostly intelligible fashion. |

| Speaking of emotes, and once again derailing a thread, you know what is missing from the wand? The sleep animation. It would be really neat to be able to have your character drop to the floor and emit ZZZZZ instead of typing ((BRB)) or hiding him/her in a corner and hoping no one notices him/her until you've come back from the toilet (or whatever). |

In 0.94-f8 onwards, when you set your status as AFK (in the Player Information), it should do exactly what you asked. |
