Identifying Items Posted: 28 Sep 2003 05:48 AM |
Recently I completed a quest which as a reward gave an unidentified ring. In need of rest, solid rations, and healing, I ran off to town. While there, I thought I would visit the market where I could pay a vendor to identify my newly acquired ring. Unfortunately, the vendor did not have this service available. So off I went to the next vendor, who also didn't give the identify option. Odd, but okay I can just move on to the next vendor, and the next, and the next and so on and so forth. I visited vendors all over Midor and a few in other areas. None had the option to id an item. That is unless there is some new secret method I am unaware of, which very well may be the case. Either way, being that I am not a caster, and need this service, I found it rather disturbing to not be able to locate a vendor who can id items. Needless to say, I am still carrying an unidentified ring somewhere in my pack.
*Didn't know if this is a bug, planned, or if there is some alternate means so I figured I'd post.
Thanks, Dark and [not so]Quiet Like |

It was a conscious design element from the world-builders. I think they wanted us to use each other's characters for the purpose. There are a number of people walking around who might ID items for you, generally for free. Loli Dankirk is developing a talent in the direction of identifying items. When she was new to Vives, she asked Grak and Shaz to do that for her. Palfrey can probably do it; I'm not sure about that. If you get really desperate, sometimes a DM will do it for you.
Oh, and also you can find Potions of Lore on small humanoids sometimes (hint-hint).

Dieties preserve us from the evil chaotics named Lag, Crash, and Server Reset. PCs: Loli Dankirk (Ftr 18/Brd 8.5 @ 1777 hrs) left Vives for Origins; Gnora Gnombody (Sor 5 @ 54 hrs) and Amanda Stark (Wiz 3 @ ~10 hrs) left Vives for Feline Providence. |

This is what I suspected. I actually kind of like the idea. The only drawback that I see with this is as follows:
If a pc is a low level, particualrly new player, you don't know anyone in game. That pc may not just walk up to someone they had never met before and ask for an id. For some pc's it would go against the rp aspect of the game. Kind of like asking a stranger on the street irl for money. Plus there are times when a pc can be in the game for a few hours without any other soul being on the server, so there is no one to ask even if that pc doesn't have problems doing it that way.
As for small humanoids dropping potions. That is helpful info for anyone. In a few levels, when small spiders no longer kick me bottom all the way to the infirmary (another neat idea), I will tackle small humanoids. Hehehe, maybe I shouldn't have revealed quite that much regarding how totally weak and powerless my pc is right now. Then again Im sure I will soon be setting new records within the Dirtnap League, so I suppose it doesn't matter. ;)
Anyway, back to the topic. It's a neat idea to keep ident. a pc thing. Has a few drawbacks for low levels, newbs, low int pcs or folks alone in the world. I guess if I could wish for anything in the game it would be some old wizard in the mages tower to id things. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**carefully pulls a long thread on the inside of her pack, making sure that one end remains attached, and knots the other end around the ring so as not to lose it.** |

| this is the reason Palfrey ID's for free, pretty much for anyone. (it takes a lot of work to make an enemy of him, but some have managed it) until there are a lot more players in the game who can reliably ident (and it looks like that situation is changing..yay), i didn't feel right about charging for the service, or refusing anyone. |
But long ago he rode away And where he dwelleth none can say |
