A question on wands
Posted: 07 Nov 2005 08:46 AM
I'm fairly sure this is in the right place, but I maybe wrong. Anyhow, here goes.

Recently I took craft wand with my character Vakal whom has an intrest in making them and I myself as a player like them just because of the concept.

However due to the amount of exp it costs and the amounts one recieves in Vives it would be difficult to keep at least a semi-steady flow of wands if Vakal wanted to lets say start a business. Not that its impossible.

Three examples increasing in difficulty.

Identify 3- 4500 gp/180 exp

Resist Elements 10- 15000 gp/600 exp

Fireball 10- 22500 gp/900 exp

So in short I'm curious if theres anyway to make the hit just a little less hard or changed up in someway to make it possible for some, granted some spells i could understand the cost. For instance as a suggestion if that was considered: Give a small amount of bonus exp to offset the wands cost depending on the quality of the wand made, because it goes off craft weapon if I recall correctly.

Well from what I remember when this was stablished the idea was really ot make it very dificult to produce wands in large scalle or start a bussiness based in this.
But maybe things changed...though I think this is on purpose really. Wands are extremely valuable if sold in a mechant, and also very costy if you buy one in there... I supose if you want to make them you must sell them with a VERYYYY HIIGHHH price. To compensate on the loss of XP and gold really. Not a craft meant for bussiness really I think...
Not to mention they are a very powerfull item..that anyone can use...

Why search around when the answer is within you...?

Wow, someone else has actually taken the feat.

Yes, it is expensive both in terms of gold and xp but personally it's something I can live with.

Why? Well, wands are usable by others as well as mages, while I'm happy spending xp/gold now and again to make my mage a little stronger, I'm not about to do the same any more than very rarely for someone else.

Don't forget that the feat covers every spell up to level 4, which is going to put a lot of power into people's hands if the xp/gold cost were lowered. Which then means less reason to play a mage.

Just my thoughts on the subject..

When I was looking through the nwscript code on crafting, I ran across the calculations on where it was done.

My initial though was that it should be lowered as vives is a lowish xp world, but then I realized that it is also not a high magic world.

Easily allowing large amounts of wands into the world could be very disruptive, especially since the wands can be used by anyone. In the end I felt that it should be left as is.
