DM EVENT: Trouble in Buckshire Posted: 29 Oct 2005 10:15 AM |
The sun shined brightly over the quaint hamlet of Buckshire. One of the locals was in the fields tending to the crops as the sun beat down on him like a chariot driver on a horse. The man stood up and wiped the sweat from his brow and smiled as the wind began to pick up. He closed his eyes to try and block off his sense of sight to allow for more feeling of the cool breeze.
Carried by the breeze, a small soft object hit the man in the face. He opened his eyes and ripped the object from this face. Slowly, he opened his hand to view what had hit him in the face. It was a just a leaf…but something was odd about it – it was black and dead. The man frowned, as he hadn’t noticed any dead trees around his land. He quickly gazed around the edges of his field and one tree caught his eye – the leaves were all black. The shock of the tree dazed the man for a second but he quickly recomposed himself and ran over to the tree.
Luckily, there was only one tree that had black leaves but a few of the near by trees look as if they were loosing their green pigment as well. He looked back over his own field and frowned. Without the Mayor, who was supposed to deal with something like this? Surely it was not the militia’s job, maybe the farmers will have to deal with this problem themselves. But where were they going to start?
Rumours of these events can be heard all over the city and Doc's is probably the best place to hear the following:
"Rumor has it the town in haunted. I heard from a friend in Port Royale that our old Mayor was killed in the Alleyway. Now he's no doubt returned to plauge us all!"
"A'while 'go I seen some wee gnome runnin' 'bout tossin' bodies in the well'n other places. Guards chased him out. Dan't know where he be now."
"Did ya 'ere about the east! Darkness is everywhere! Doom! It's comin' 'ere and these dieing trees are the first stage!"
The town appears to be going into moderate chaos as people continue to guess at the root cause...which only worsens the fear.
((First Event will be run on Nov 2 at 9 p.m. EST [Nov 3 at 2 a.m. GMT]
This is open for anyone as most likely there will be no combat but the whole thing is targeted for low (<10) level characters.)) |

The trees in Buckshire are getting worse. More and more are dieing everyday and no one can figure out the cause. Among the locals, a woman by the name of Deirdre Pink, runs a general store and a small carpenters shop. She has been moaning and groaning about the getting the mayor to finally make some dang changes in their town but the mayor is no where to be found.
After all the whining and all the groaning, she’s finally decided to stand up and do something for herself.
~*~
A notice goes up around the town of Buckshire:
Dear Fellow Buckshirians
I write this letter to you so we can decide a course of action regarding the trees. So long we have gone without a Mayor to help us in these matters and now I believe it is time to stand up and do something about the problem.
I propose that we can meet with ideas about how to fix this problem before it gets out of hand. In three days time, come to Doc’s and we can talk there. Buckshire needs you now more then ever.

((This is a potentially a momentous occasion (for me anyway) as I might be able to make my first Vives DM Quest, as living on the US West coast makes it dififcult...never mind the two young kids...
However, if I'm about half an hour to 45 minutes late, is that okay? Would I be killing the mood?))

Willom grumbled as he grabbed his pack and hefted it over his shoulders. “Well, this is all I need. Saving trees.” His voice carried a sour taste. “How do I get into these things?”
Iris chuckled. “Oh, Willom. What’s the big deal? This won’t take long. And besides, we can do something good and help out Buckshire.”
Willom said nothing, smoldering with scorn over how he had apparently lost all control over his life. The play, the threats from Midor and from the large nasty Orc wanting to play arts and crafts with his ears, and now Jessup forcing Marrya on him as some kind of guardian. And his head still swelled with painful confusion whenever he attempted to rationalize out his last encounter with Melissa and her ‘Shadow.’
And now he’s saving trees. “This is most definitely not the life of a famous actor.”
Iris groaned. “So you have said, time and time and time again. Maybe it’s time to change your definition.”
They stepped out into the morning haze and ripeness of the Port Royale streets. Willom peered down the corridors of buildings and around corners with anxious dread. “Do you see Marrya anywhere?”
Iris looked about. “No. It’s all clear.”
“Good. I’ve already had about enough of her.”
Iris sighed. “Perhaps if you didn’t antagonize her so, you’d get along with her better.”
Willom’s face stretched taut with shock. “Me??? I’m nothing but pleasant! It’s her that’s always starting something. I'll tell you this, when I see Jessup again, he’s getting an earful from me.”
Iris gave a patronizing nod and a wry smile. “Yes, Willom. You’ve always been very commanding with Jessup.”
Willom huffed at her and started walking.
Arriving at the Herbalists, they stepped inside to the waft of acidic and medicinal odors. They walked to the back of the store where Anna was sorting a variety of components on a shelf behind the counter.
“Good morning, Anna,” Iris greeted. “Could we trouble you for a moment?”
Anna turned her head and, seeing Iris, smiled warmly. “Well hello, Iris! Here to brew more acids for tanning? Or are you adventuring into new and exciting concoctions?”
“No, not today. Actually, we’re here on a slightly more serious note.”
Anna set aside her armful of items and faced Iris with her complete attention. “Oh, what is the trouble, dear?”
“Well, you’ve heard about the trees dying in Buckshire?”
“Anna nodded with concern. “Yes. A terrible thing.”
“I was hoping you might be able to lend your expertise to this mystery. I would not have the skills necessary yet.”
Willom reached into his pack and pulled out the sample of bark and branch he had retrieved the night before. “We were hoping you might be able to discover just what is plaguing the Buckshire trees by examining these samples. At least determine if it is natural, or....something else.” He placed the samples on the counter.
Anna scrutinized the blackened bark and withered, black branch. “Hmm. I must say, I’ve never seen anything like this before, but I’m certainly no expert in such matters.” She turned them over in her hand and, grabbing a knife, scraped away at a section of the branch. “Well, I should be able to extract whatever foreign element has invaded the healthy growth. From there, I can attempt to determine its origins. Leave them here and I’ll get to work on it.”
Iris smiled. “Thank you, Anna. And if you know any druids who might be able to examine the trees, I would think their skills would come in quite handy.”
Anna ponders this a moment. “I have several druidic contacts that I do business with from time to time. They can be fortuitous when it comes to exotic elements. Let me see if I can rally one of them to the cause. They would likely be most concerned about this.”
Willom slipped his back pack on. “We’ll be sure to let Deidre Pink know how responsive you’ve been to this situation. Thank you.”
Anna gave a light laugh. “Well, I can never resist the challenge of discovering something new. Who knows? Maybe from this I can discover an entirely new component that will be useful in the alchemistic practices.”
Iris showed a curious interest. “I would enjoy greatly if I could look over your shoulder as you work, Anna.”
“Well, you are more than welcome to, Iris. Stop by later this afternoon. You can assist me.”
Willom and Iris thanked her again and left the Port Royale Herbalists, confident that the issue of the Buckshire trees was in good hands.
“There,” Iris stated with satisfaction. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Willom glances about him again. “No. And we didn’t have to be tormented by Marrya’s company. I’ll admit; it gives me a perverse pleasure to know that we have outwitted her. She’s all talk, that one.”
“Oh, Willom,” Iris said with exasperation and they walk off down the Port Royale streets.
Unseen by them, a shadowy figure steps out from behind the back of the Herbalists, a sly smirk sliding across her face. “Ya really fink ya can slip by me that easy, Mr. Wilde?” Marrya murmers under her breath as she slips through the shadows to follow. “An’ I thought you bard’s were s’posed ta be smart.” |

Re: Investigation Posted: 04 Nov 2005 09:06 AM |
Later that day, Iris and Willon returned to the herbalist.
As Iris enters the shop, Anna has a deep frown over her face. “This is far worse then I was expecting…” She hands the remaining dead branches over to Iris, “I’d rather not have such a thing left in here either.”
Anna glanced back to her clean table and turned back to address the two, “These branches are dead and they look like they’ve been dead for a long time and I mean a long time. More than 100 years to be exact.”
“Something is very wrong with this and it is not natural, that much I know. If you’re sure that this tree was alive a few weeks ago, then I can see nothing wrong with the branches aside from its advanced stage of decay.” She frowned as she finished giving her report.
“My druidic contacts will be getting back to me by the end of the day, I hope I they have a more complete report than I do.” |

Anna handed the reply she received from her druid friend to Iris. It reads as follows:
Anna:
I have looked at the samples you have sent to us and I am deeply disturbed by the state of those trees. It appear if they have been cursed by one who would exploit nature. I fear for not just the trees in Buckshire, but all nature in town.
My attempts at healing the trees were in vain and the only solution to this problem would have to be to try and reason with whom or what ever is the cause.
Please keep me updated,
[Signed Kirin]

Re: DM EVENT: Trouble in Buckshire Posted: 12 Nov 2005 09:44 AM |
A large wave of spirit energy swept over Buckshire and the surrounding areas. It appeared to originate from north of Buckshrie, near the ocean.
As the energy swept over the area, life quickly returned to the black dead trees. The fungus and the massive rain and lightning storm that had enveloped the quaint hamlet also receded. The curse had been lifted.
For now, Buckshire could celebrate a victory and they would do so in grand fashion.
Elbert promised that if he was elected mayor, this day on all years forth would be a holiday known as “Listen to your friendly neighborhood Gnome” day after he was correct about the location of the problem.
Daimon continued to speak with the local militia of whose favor he was quickly gaining.
Deirdre spent her time organizing a party for tonight at Doc’s (([Nov 12, 9 p.m. EST])) to celebrate Buckshire’s recent victory. Still, she has not announced her status regarding the election. Rumors have it that she is not interested but that remains to be seen.
Other rumors suggest that the race is tight between Elbert and Daimon. The Gnomes and some of the commoner are rallying behind Elbert while the militia and those associated with them are fully behind Daimon. Still, a large portion of the commoners are behind Deirdre, even though she seems to have no intention of running.
