Questing From A New Person Perspective

First some butt kissing. Vives is an awesome PW; the level of player and DM involvement is wonderful. From hour one the more seasoned players pulled me into their dialogue and gave Vives a distinct RP feel.

Now for my whining. Vives is a difficult place to be as a new player if there are no other players around. When left to my own devices I wander around the places I know (Port and Plaza) because if I go anywhere else (Sewers, Carfax, Woods) I seem to die.... quickly.

Is it possible for you to provide more safe "fed ex" quest. The only ones I know of are the herbalist who asks for wheat and the guards who are deserting. Not to rant too much but the quests are not very self explanatory and unless you know what you are doing are tough to figure out, or remember what you need to do (see my post on journal entries).

Let beginning players become comfortable with the various towns by giving them quests to drop things off for people, buy them things, and rid houses of rats (abandoned house in PR anyone...?).

One thing to be very careful of is to make these quests self explanatory, the DMs, Developers, and people who log 2400 hours on the server know Vives like the back of their hand but a new player needs to be told where they can find the fish monger in order to get some fish for a stew (there could be a chef at the trading post who asks for that). These kinds of little meaningless quests will ensure that new players who wander in will want to stay. Nothing makes a player leave faster then frustration with not being able to do anything.

And now I sandwich my whining and recommendations with more butt kissing. Vives is great; I am happy I am here and assure you, you will hear more from me (whether you like it or not)Smiley

PS
I would be more then willing to create these quests.

Hi thereSmiley.

I am glad you are enjoying Vives.

Vives has always meant to be a world to play in groups, not solo. As such, if you don't know about the world, the quests encourage you (and all players) to speak to each other IC and find out where they need to go next.

There already is a quest that involves the abandoned house in PR, ask around IC IG if you want to find out more about itSmiley.

One of the other DMs/Builders may be able to explain a bit more about the extra stuff we have already put into Vives recently to make it easier for newer players to get around. Vives is being updated and improved every day, so thanks for your feedback.

Also if you find yourself stuck on any of the quests, where you can't find the "fish" you need, feel free to ask folks IG for help and they'll likely point you the right way. Of course if you're a LG Paladin and you ask a priest of Menarok you may not receive the kind of help you were looking for.... but you pays yer money, you takes yer chancesSmiley.

nobody was a fresher fish than i. i bought neverwinter nights only on the basis of biowares excellent x-box games. this is the first internet game i ever played and i am hooked. being new and spending alot of time, the best thing to do is go into every building in town...get your discovery xp up til you level a few times. then cautiosly explore around the 4 winds. talk to as many people in game as possible and hope you get hit with the rp stick. and take up crafting....monotonous but digging sand to make glass to make flasks will get you xp and a good chunk of gold if you know who is looking for it. good luck and see you in game

Also, this might be a bit of strange for some on a heavy RP server, but I sometimes just like to give a small OOC tell to people of around the same level, asking if they would be willing to RP or hunt. Alot better then just hoping you run into someone in this tremendous world. :)

nothing wrong with that. We provide the player information tool to help you locate other players to arrange a "run in" with.

travelling with other lunatics makes it more interesting.

Why the other day, I watched 3 new half orcs decide they were the right number for taking Ender's wifes as their own. Doubt it would have happened unless they travelled together.

(Where they come up with outlandish ideas, I'll never know)

Heh, I snagged another one eh :P

But, yes, I think we all feel your pain about dieing (I know I do). I'm not sure what level Feng is at the moment, but you can get up to 5 or so without killing anthing other then a rat or bat. Just stick around the areas you know and try to meet up with people and go to other places that you might not be able to handle alone. And remember that player's stone is your friend.

When it is your first character, you will often find yourself alone and wanting to see more of the world, but that is usually when you get yourself killed and that could leave you behind on levels - but since it is a RP server, levels don't matter ;)

Of course there are other ways to get yourself killed like:

-Listening to anyone who has a plan
-Going to the Library
-Or, talking bad about Tarik :P
