An unimportant tea party
Posted: 11 Sep 2005 12:40 AM
Sometimes messages have to be sent in so many ways...

From a house in the rocks, the frail message carried by a cloaked being whose eyes are glowing in the night,

To a blessed part of the woods where fishes are abundant,

To an inn near a white city,

To a firecamp in the middle of nowhere,

To a cave in the mountains guarded by stoic Dwarven warriors.

Sometimes, unimportant things can be tricky to carry.

To those whom it concerns,

I am glad to invite you for a session of talking along with a tea ceremony, regarding the various situation and problems our civilations faces. Tea, biscuits and coffee for all invited.

Angelius

Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

Lillian adjusts her spectacles and squints at the cursive writing in the dim firelight. She reads the message for the fifth time, inspecting the handwriting, analysing the phrasing, identifying the type of papyrus and ink used. Checking for a hundred different things they covered in half-remembered lessons at the Academy.

The messenger looked like Angelius. She wants to be sure.

She shreds the letter and throws it into the fire so it cannot be traced, watching it crumble to infinitesimal particles of ash. So little time to prepare. But steps must be taken to ensure the security of those attending.

Markus gave the partial note a glance, noting the signature; though his eyes were more intent on watching the retreating figure in the distance. When he was sure the messenger was gone he read the note to himself in stoic silence. Pressing a nuckle to his lips in deep thought. Once he'd finnished reading the note, it crinkled in his hand as he fixed it into a ball, tossing the paper into the fire.
Tea, that's good... I like tea. *pause* I should get ready.
Markus Mortriety didn't need to get ready, he was wearing all he had. Really what was left was to think, and wait. He shifted in his seat, adjusting the scabbard of his sword so it stopped poking into his hip. The small campfire that he'd carefully nestled into a small pit smoked freely into the night air.

CHOO CHOO!

Coruva holds the note in one hand, carefully rereading the text that was so carfully inscribed. His eyes drift and fix themselves on a small shadowed corner of his room, watching the candlelight twists the shadows from side to side. Watching a story only seen by his eyes, unfold within them. "Brina" he utters, almost underneath his breath, and the parchment bursts into flames, turning to ash and leaving only the small corner that was gripped between his thumb and forefinger.

Mace and satchel in hand, he walks from the Halls, making his way to the answers, and perhaps the resolution that he desires.

So long without a home. Salt was surprised that the letter found him at the inn, but he believed that the more care one put into even a brief dispatch, the more likely it would reach its destination. A finely-writ letter will never stop trying unless it is destroyed.

On a sunlit windowsill he ran his thumb over the signature. Angelius. He holds the staff… Holds it for his mistress. A plain and open conversation then. What could be better? Salt had wanted such an audience for months now.

He rubbed patchy stubble on his chin and surveyed the meadow behind the inn. Morning, and yet there was no dew. The meadow was drying up. Innkeeper ought to burn it back, Salt thought. When the need for fresh air was satisfied he rolled up the letter and shoved it up his sleeve. Good paper is never wasted in his hands.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

So much for intimacy, Phillippe thought.

He got used to the fact that someone could litterally barge in his bedroom when he was alone with his wife, but there was some limits he tried to make respect from Angelius but, after all, he was in his home...

"Yes...???"

"Sorry for that ... w..was I interrupting something?" Angelius asked sheepishly.

"Nothing, nothing ... what did they say?" asked Blanche softly looking at the two men of her life.

"They will come, of course they will! Blanche..you are not alone."

Chia walked tiredly into Enders tent and as usual after a brief nod to him walked over to the fountain to wash away the dust of the desert and grime and gore from the tombs she habitually visited. Somehow, no matter how hard one tried, they always returned.

She looked round in surprise at the light touch on her shoulder and took the note which one of Ender's wives handed her without a word.

As her eyes quickly scanned the contents, her expression changed.

For the first time in many months, Chia Steel smiled.

Gasher quickly pulled back on the fishing rod in his hands, his eyes wide with excitement. The line danced along the surface of the water as the fish beneath the rivers surface attempted frantically to escape its sudden predictament.

Another couple minutes of struggling finally led to the thick catfish breaking the rivers clear surface near the bank.As eagerly as a child in a candy store, Gasher leapt up and took a couple steps into the cool water of the river to ensure the large catch did not get away.

He could not believe the size of the fish he now held as he made his way to the campfire in between the river bank and his lean-to. "Must be twenty pounds of fish here!", he spoke breathlessly as he admired the decent sized catfish."Maybe more!", he exclaimed happily as he brought the fish near his face and kissed it on the side of its head, the thick fleshy 'whiskers' tickling his cheek as he did so. "The mother provides well as always." He spoke the words reverently, before pausing to mutter a quick prayer of thanks to the goddess of nature.

Half an hour later the fire was blazing, and the large catfish fillets were in a pan hanging over the flame. The skeletal remains of the fish still trying desperately to squirm its way back into the water in true catfish fashion. The nerves of the dead fish still driving it towards water.

At first the approaching figure alarmed Gasher. Clearly humanoid was the approaching figure, but the head had a definative canine appearance. Gasher started to rise, until the figure took a few more steps closer..

"Ahh Angelius. Greetings friend." The large barbarians gaze returned to the frying pan briefly. "Seems the mother expected me to have company this eve friend. For I have caught one larger than I will eat in one setting."

Angelius approached, a smile formed on the archons face as he sniffed the air eagerly. "It smells absolutely delightful Gasher, my timing could not have been more perfect it seems."

Angelius sat beside the fire as Gasher prepared two plates, handing one over to Angelius before taking a seat on the ground himself.

There were several moments of silence as the two eagerly devoured their platefuls of fish. In between mouthfuls Gasher spoke. "So what brings you out this way friend Angelius?" A sudden look of alarm covered the barbarians face and he quickly added, "Blanche is well yes?"

Angelius nodded as he finished chewing the mouthful of fish. "Yes, yes Blanche is well, I bring a letter, an invitation for tea." The archon reached into a pouch on his belt and produced a rolled parchment and handed it over to the barbarian before taking another large bite of the fish.

"Good, good, tea you say?" Gasher took another mouthful of the fish before unrolling the parchment and reading it carefully.

Angelius

Gasher rerolled the parchment a broad grin on his face. "I will be there friend,as long as I am able.Never by choice would I turn down good tea, or conversation with good friends. Just make sure to have one batch at least that is cold, I much prefer my tea cold."

Angelius chuckled, "right, cold tea,it has been noted."

The two spoke in between mouthfuls for a while longer, until the meal was consumed and Angelius rose.

"I thank you for the wonderful meal Gasher, and hope you are able to attend the tea party. Now I must be on my way, I have more invitations to deliver." With that the archon nodded to Gasher and began walking away.

"Safe travels friend Angelius, may the mother bless your path." Gasher rose and began burying the squirming catfish remains in a spot he had thought to fertilize for a future small garden. After planting the fertilizer he took the plates to the nearby falling waters and scrubbed them clean.

After finishing the chores he grabbed a fishing pole, tossed a baitless hook into the waters and leaned his back against his favorite sitting log, his eyes closing contentedly.
