question on major quests and XP Posted: 28 Aug 2005 05:58 PM |
| ive been with vives now for about three weeks and was wondering about the DM quests. the first quest i was on ( purple badgers ) i got a whopping 2100 xp when it was over. the halls of bregodim was 210 but it was a roleplaying bonus. on the last one, the icy vale which was a doozy to be sure, i got nada. my question is simply do you get xp for DM quests? |

Simple answer is there is no set rule. And no set amount. But yes, in this instance looks like you somehow got overlooked.
Generally the awards will always be a "roleplaying award". The only difference in the two rewards you received was in how the DM chose to give them, one method registers as a rp award, the other just as an xp award.
Sorry you got missed on the xp for the latest quest, does happen sometimes, let us know the PC name and will sort it next time we catch you IG.

As an addendum, just checked with Sol and she said she definitely gave you xp. Was done after all the chaos died down, so you probably just missed it. She has checked the log and you were definitely given xp, at 18.06 UK time.

Another point to make is that if players die a lot on DM run quests and lose xp from being ressed, the DMs MIGHT give you extra xp at the end of the quest to compensate. Which can explain the difference between larger and smaller awards sometimes.

Usually, yes, XP is handed out on DM Events. However, the main concern of the DMs is to run a story; I seriously doubt they run events with the intention of "Let's have an XP fest for the players without any RP" So sometimes they forget to hand out the XP or overlook people. Or suffer from terrible technical problems and just try to have the event run as smoothly as possible, then get to the conclusion and log out ASAP (DM avatars apparently cause lots of lag). Or are on a tight schedule due to RL reasons and have to log out before they can hand out the XP.
As with anything run when there are DMs around, the XP handed out tends to be proportional to the RP, and that's an amount that varies from DM to DM. You're as likely to get hit with XP repeatedly for pumping out witticisms as you are for playing a major part in a DMed session. Although there is a distinction between IC chatter and actual RP, but that's a discussion for another time.
Personally, I wouldn't be too fussed about it. I've been to a few major events and not gotten any XP, but I have walked away with lots of story material. XP, meh. XP is something you can get on your own quite easily without DM help. IG lore and world-shaking events and meeting fun people like Mister Nu'men, however, is something only the DMs can provide. |

Re: question on major quests and XP Posted: 28 Aug 2005 06:57 PM |
From a personal point of view, it depends on a number of criteria. Primarily it's RP based, so it is possible that if something hapens while a quest is being run or a comment catches my eye and not involved in anything else, will give occasional dabs with the wand as I go. It's not always the case, nor is it always possible - simple logistics sometimes prevents it. generally, at the end of an event I will hand out xp, alternatively if a player has to log out before the event is over I'll give xp then - again, if possible. If not or if for example the player crashes I will quite often catch up later. As a general rule though anybody who takes part is rewarded. As to amounts, well it's subjective and as far as I am concerned at least based on:
1. Quality of the roleplay and contribution to what's happened, somebody who 'mixes in' is likely to be rewarded better than somebody who stands at the back of the crowd and neither says nor emotes anything.
2. The particular event, if as Sol mentioned earlier the death rate has been high then I will generally make allowance for it, and rewards will be higher to compensate for loss - my reasoning being that the chances are you wouldn't have died 2/3/4 times in that space of time if you hadn't participated.
That is my own view, and my own way of doing things, I also lurk quite a bit and hand out xp for roleplaying generally, we all do.
The story does come first certainly, that's why we are here, but generally I try to make sure people are rewarded. |

| thanks for the info. i wasnt bent over it as im in this for the game , i was just curious as to how xp was awarded for such things. ive noticed when running with the big boys that ill get like 3 xp for killing a ghidra but i know thats just because of high level characters and i get their xp but with the vale quest i wasnt sure what was going on cause it was hectic to say the least and i was dead with everybody but garrak by the finale. thanks for answering me and see you ingame. one last thing i noticed in fixtrix post was the mention of nu'men...is that as in nu'mens balls, and do i really want to know. i was asked to not say the vulgar version of darn in game and one of the phrases i could say was nu'mens balls. somehow that dont seem right |

XP, meh. XP is something you can get on your own quite easily without DM help.
Speak for yourself! Some of us don't go out and bash things anymore, or find new places, or craft, or do scripted quests. And we've also died a lot and killed a bunch of things that lowered our combat exp (well for things that we can kill on our own). So, yeah, DM EXP is almost all I get by on.
Hmm, you know, those sound like the words of a PGer! Ha! I caught you Ficcy! :P
