Level requirements for items
Posted: 25 Aug 2005 05:23 PM
I was just wondering - I've been bitten by this a couple of times now, having bought items that are 'too good' for my character. Is there any way to have the level requirement show in the item description, or some other way of letting the player know without him trying it? I bought some armour for one of my characters today, only to find out that he wasn't skilled enough to use it. As it turns out, he's only one level below what it needs - but it's still mildly annoying, given that the armour cost me over 10,000 gold, a good portion of his savings.

The level requirement for an item is missing out of purpose.
If you want to know what level an item might be, you could check the lore table and measure the level according to the price. There was a thread about it somewhere, but the search function does not work (at least not for me).
I didn´t like it at first, too...I guess I got used to it. heh

Apparantly we elected that it's more realistic if you're incapable of seeing an item's level requirements prior to buying it.

Ultimately I think this concept is bunk. You don't buy a pair of shoes without trying them on in real life, and similarly I should think a merchant would allow you to try out a sword or a suit of armour, giving you the opportunity to see if it "fits" before you choose to buy it. Ultimately, posting a level requirement on an item is an OOG way of expressing an IG concept - item is too powerful for you to handle at this time (which in and of itself is a silly prospect). It's also a way to establish ability without handing an item over to someone.

"Hey, do you think you can use this?" - Barter Window
Examine - "*hefts it* No, it still seems beyond my abilities." - Close Barter

Now you have to actually transfer the item to the other player (or actually buy it from the vendor) and hope it's within your grasp.

Why the DMs decided to make the change I can't say. But they do suggest that you use the price of the item as a guide to its relative level requirement. Which in and of itself, in a living, breathing role-playing world suggests that the price is indicative to the vendor's appraisal of the item's power and value and would probably be very qualified to make an assumption about the item's level requirement.

Umm, actually had nothing whatsoever to do with making the world more realistic. Or anything of the sort.

It was simply that there were certain changes we wanted to implement into Vives, such as epic spells, that quite simply would not work with Bioware ILR. So purely for ooc mechanics reasons I'm afraid.

The only way to introduce really cool updates for Vives was by doing this. It is an inconvenience, but with some care and reading the post in essential info hopefully not game breaking.

Cheers,

Sirac

And the post is here that discusses the approximate values of items and their levels.

You could also remake that expensive item in the tool set and have a look at the level requirment ;)

Thanks Sirac and Sol, that gives me some idea at least. The moral of the story - don't buy anything for more than 8000 gold, I guess :D

It was the only way to introduce the epic spell system for epic casters.

I could turn it off if you wish, but all epic spells and epic spell knowledge will be lost on login after the change to the server is made.

i must say i saved 42000 for an adamite breastplate, sold my armor to get the last couple thousand..then found out i couldnt wear it..yeah i was pissed and broke..but thats the game i guess. i dont mind it except if you try to switch armor in a dangerous place, and then your left in your skivvies trying to manage your inventory to get dressed again.

If it's only Balthor... :P

Nah, I wouldn't sweat it too much. It's obnoxious, but you learn to deal with it.

I'm gonna have to side with Tasra on this one. You just gotta take your time with new stuff, check it against the cost/lvl avg. scale. And most importantly of all, don't sell all your current equipment to get new stuff you aren't sure about. If you don't have the Gold to buy it... wait till you do. It's a safer bet than selling your current weapon and your backup just to find out you can use the new one for X lvls and the resell on it isn't enough to buy your old gear back... well that's my opinion on it anyways
