A couple of questions
Posted: 25 Jul 2005 01:33 PM
Im not sure if this is the correct place to post this,so ill say sorry now if it is....Sorry :)

Anyway, the purpose of this post is just to find out a few things

Firstly i am toally new to RP'ing, taking on the persona of a charachter and being that charachter is not something ive tried before. So you can guess that what im asking is,will i be welcome to come along and check vives out?
Ive tried a couple of other pw's but found them to be either not what i want or to structured so that its unplayable.
At this moment in time,i have plenty of time on my hands due to having to go in and out of hospital a lot.
ive checked the screenies and like what i see and will d/l the haks later and sometime withing the next few days connect and see what i shall see.

Hello, welcome, I hope you can really find your place here.

Vives is exclusively a role-playing server. There is some non-character chat between players through tells, but anything you should ever say should be considered something your character is saying. On one hand, you don't want to be talking about the Matrix, but on the other, walking around yelling I WANT A BROADSWORD!!!!111ONE isn't going to make you any friends either.

Try and put some emphasis on spelling and punctuation. I know you know how to do it, now's the time to get in some practice.

As far as being brand new to it, think of yourself as an improvisational actor in a play. Let's say that you're Lawrence Martin, the noble Knight, and you wander around looking for evil to slay in the name of your noble cause. Act it out, play the part as though you had an audience. React to things in the game as if they were actually scripted.

If you need some help starting out, the best tip I can give you is get out there and meet EVERYONE. Run into everybody you can and talk to them and learn from them, pick up their habits and build off their ideas. You might take some time to get acclimated but you might like it.

Welcome again.

Well, if you've never RP'd before, you might feel a little out of sync at first. A few tips I might point out, from mistakes I made when I first started:

Don't greet a new person by name. Learn it first, just because it's floating over their heads, doesn't mean you know it.
(( )) is usually designated as OOC (OOC being Out of Character).
* * is some sort of action, such as *kicks*

I'm not sure what else to add off hand, but there you have it.

Vives was the very first time I rped. I can say for a fact you will be welcomed and don't worry about making mistakes. We all started out new. If you get out there and meet people and watch other players you'll pick it up and it won't be long before you'll develop your own style of rping.

Of course my characters always take me over. *grumbles something about characters not behaving and doing what they're suppose to do* Also, don't be afraid to ask other players if you have questions. Just be sure to do it in tells.

Vives was my very first experience with RP, as well. Just to second what the above said, just act IC (the best you can, it'll go much easier with practice... noone is asking for Shakespeare right out of the gate) and players, were (to me) and will be (to you) -very- welcoming. So, along those lines, welcome! Perhaps I'll see you in-game soon.

I would suggest you dont try anything to radical at first either .
Your dream CHR. can perhaps wait whilst you get used to things .
I found that playing a dwarf or half orc fighter to start with means that you wont be killed very often. Also you wont be expected to type eloqent knowledgable sentences really quickly (as perhaps an elf mage would speak).
Its not really what we're looking for , but, a Half orc head smasher would often just grunt or *scratch his head*.
And basicly you will learn how to be a good RPer by just being around the superb collection of players we have here.
Then you can become the Elf sorcerer with a disturbing past, a split personallity and a talking familiar called Quaxiloctry that suckles at your third nipple.

Dont feel intimidated and get stuck in
Look forward to meating you.

one suggestion I would make is to make your first character a lot like you personality wise, it makes rp'ing easier to start, and can be a lot of fun. once you get the basics down then start to build on that. Doing it that way has been a blast for johe and meSmileyand yes Shanara's right once you let it happen they DO take overSmileyThen it gets really easy you just have to hang on for the ride ;)

What might help also is if we held a Vives101 session for any new players to get the feel and meet everyone.

Or an evening where you're not allowed on unless its with a lev 5 or below chr.
Advertise it on the Vault , as a great opportunity to enter the premier server that vives is.
Better still , why set aside a whole real life week for under lev 5 chrs..
it would be a great opportunity to establish some life long relationships with the new glut of low lev chrs..
And i reckon it would atract new players also..

While I myself wouldn't mind something along those lines, where would your >5 level characters be that feel like playing during the week?

Doesn't really matter what time you're on, server is up 24/7. That said, unfortunately UK time, during the day especially, is one area where we do not have many logging on apart from weekends, evenings and nights are usually OK once US players start being up and around. Though it does vary, some days are obviously better than others. Probably the message is log on whenever you feel like it. The number of people around to interact with will vary though.

Ok ive been trundleing around vives for a short while now, mostly when no one is around.
I thought it best that i register a charachter,so went ahead and clicked the link.
One thing that confused me from the start was NWN login...is that the login i use for the nwn website or the one i use for loggin into the MP side??
no more questions i promise...well for a short while at least :)

Whatever login you use for the NWN MP side of things is entirely up to you, we will pick up who you are as your playing account is linked to the CD Key of your game. You do not by any means have to have a logon name which matches your forum name and are free if you like to have more than one NWN login, entirely up to you. More than one player here logs in on more than one account. The only restriction is on whether the player name has been used already in which case NWN will tell you.

Good guide to NWN RP from NW connections
Posted: 27 Jul 2005 04:58 PM
Many replies to this question already, but Neverwinter Connections has a really nice .pdf available online with some tips for roleplaying on servers like this one. I found it through someone's helpful posting on the Vives forums in the first place--it was introduced in 2003 and a couple threads on these forums referred to it in that year.

The link is here as well as below:

http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1054180720258.shtml

Its a twenty page guide with a lot of basics that are conventional to Vives, as well as some more novel stuff to try while playing. Its a purdy little .pdf to boot. I learned from it.

EDIT: I fixed the link to take you to the free download of this .pdf. You can also access it by clicking a button marked "Role-Player's Guide" on the frontpage of Neverwinter Connections.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."
