*notices next to the auction slate* Posted: 24 May 2005 02:29 AM |
The following are notices placed on more traditional parchment, and placed in close proximity to the bidding slates for Malakai's body...
In Brandibuck tavern:
We beseech any who can help in this. We do not even know of the people who have currently bid on this bizarre auction, or what they have in mind for our people. But please, any that can help, we beg you do so. We, the halflings of Brandibuck, have put together all our reserves, including a substantial donation from Drugo, master alchemist. In total it comes to three hundred thousand gold, which we will gladly form a consortium with any other that will gain for us the information as to how to free our kin, including the right sized known as Johe. We care little for the rest of what is bid for, though would like this Malakai to face justice for his crimes, we will not insist on this if it would prevent a deal being reached.
We would also welcome any contributions from people who would help us in our time of need, so that we may increase the size of our offer. All such donations should be given into the care of Winky, who has been given access to a secure bag of holding for such funds.
*signed* The citizens of Brandibuck
((any PC wishing to give a donation to Winky, please send me a PM with the amount you are giving and I will arrange for it to be removed from your character. Anyone wishing to arrange a meeting with Winky, PM me or feel free to arrange a "consortium" here on the forums))
....................
Next to the slate in Netharu, PAJWT and the trading post, written in a dry brown "ink":
Know that any who seek to restore the life of the mage named Malakai will earn our eternal emnity. He deserves death for his crimes. Any that wish to form a consortium with us, know that our interest in gold has never been great, but we have long memories and reward well those that side with us. We can provide two hundred and fifty thousand gold towards this bidding, as well as acknowledging a debt to any who gift us the body. We care nothing for any other part of this auction...though being allowed to pose certain questions to this mage would earn even greater favour from us.
We have ascertained the nature of this "Gathering" and it is legitimate. And they have secured the body in a place beyond even our means. We would warn them that if the wrong outcome occurs from this foolish auction, they will be remembered.
*signed*
Lord Nu'men of Netharu
.........................
Next to the slate in Naillamne, and also posted in Kaazim and Ladriel:
We, the mages of Naillamne, are interested in securing the release of the mage known as Malakai. We will offer one million gold to form a consortium with any who seek to secure his body, and see him restored to life and freedom. We would also point out this mage holds significant memories of long forgotten magic, and several of our members are privately interested in offering a further two hundred and fifty thousand gold per question they are allowed to pose to him, but only if afterwards he is restored to life.
*signed with a flourish, on the very finest parchment*
Dracon Malavort, magi of the tenth circle.
.......................
Next to the slate in the Trading post, written in a very childish scrawl:
PUHLEASE free our father master. We miss him. We not have much, but we give all we have. Nice shiny things. If master not come home, we going to come play here lots and lots. That be FUN!! There be many and many and many of us, and we ALL come out to play. Father master never let us do that before, but now we can, YAY!
But be more fun if father master come home...his big children are getting hungry and sad.
*the writing trails off, and is signed with a simple "Q"*
((anyone wishing DM interaction resulting from any of the above, the DM team will do the best they can, send me a PM and will see what can be arranged)) |

With a determined expression Winky approached the group of bigguns that had been calling his front room home for the past little while. Holding out a seemingly empty sack, and with barely a tremor to his voice, he addressed them all, not even flinching beneath Jessup's appraising stare...
" 'Bout time you bigguns 'elped out, dont ya think!?"
And with a look of awe in his eyes he watched as they did exactly that. A veritable torrent of gold poured into his sack, which remained seemingly perpetually empty. Having turned and amended the total on the board behind him to four hundred and sixty three thousand gold, he looked around the room one last time, with a sincere smile upon his face.
"It's nice ta know some of ya bigguns do care aftah all"
So saying he returned to the bar, a new look of determination upon his face. He had learnt from this episode, and would be sure to ask for help again... |

*The following notice is posted next to the slate in the trading post, and PAJWT, written on fine parchment and in flowing, stylized handwriting*
House Malagar, of Port Royale, has noted the interest in this auction. We have freed up a substantial amount of our trading income to make available to bidders in this event. We have a total of two million gold available, which we are willing to offer to whichever interested party makes us the most attractive offer.
Obviously, to protect our investment, certain very strict guarantees and security measures would be required of anyone seeking such a sizeable loan. These guarantees are iron clad, the penalties for failing to meet a deadline for repayment would be extremely harsh.
That said, our terms are these. Half of whatever is loaned must be repaid within a month from the date of the loan being issued. And the remainder of the loan repaid after one further month. Aside from that, any or all of this two million gold fund will go to whoever offers us the best return on our investment. The minimum offer we would contemplate would be a twenty five percent return.
Please leave any bids at our trading house in the Port. All negotiations must be completed by midday tomorrow, when the successful candidate(s) will receive their loan after signing the necessary contracts.
Jerome Malagar, scion of House Malagar.
((the trading house is one of the numerous minor nobles houses in the "posh" part of Port. Simply PM me any offers.)) |

*notices placed next to the slate in the Trading Post, and Ye Hole in De Ground*
I have been bidding on behalf of a number of people who wish to see the halflings restored, including the people of Brandibuck themselves.
Our group also wishes to see Malakai Fenghuul given a proper burial, and never restored to life. His possessions will either be sold, and the gold given to the seven sisters, or donated to Ka'azim or Ladriel for study, so that good causes may gain from them.
Furthermore, the offered questions are to be used to aid in the defence of Brandibuck in future, by attempting to gain arcane knowledge to construct protective guardians, with the exception of one question which has been given to another party wronged by Malakai, whose intentions we do not question.
Our main intent, however, is to allow the halflings of Brandibuck our kin back, without seeing them used as pawns by anymore parties in this auction.
I, and the halflings of Brandibuck, beseech all those of good heart to give whatever gold they may to Winky, or to myself.
We understand that a number of good hearted people have supported groups which wish to keep the power of the archmage to themselves. Please, do not be fooled into helping groups other than the halflings who have so recently suffered. If you wish to aid the halflings, we welcome your aid- but aid us. Allow us to secure the freedom of our kin. Allow us to remove the danger of Malakai from the world, and most importantly, aid us in stopping knowledge which could cause another tragedy such as this from ever seeing the light of day again.

Vic and Gregor were out of breath....there were manybids to write down..all over the lands...and the boards had to be checked many times a day.....they both handed Mister Jessup what they had written down....The orc's eyes grew large at the amount of gold being bid...either way he was going to win no matter how it turned out it would seem. He would make sure whomever won would release the information of Johe's whereabouts...one way or another. What was more curious was what the apparent group of halflings planned to do with the body and goods of the deceased mage....bury the body.....sell or donate the items... Mister Jessup chuckled at the lack of thought in their planning. The Hand had yet to act...and soon it would...one way or another. |

*Message written on fine cream parchment with blue flowing script. Placed next to the slate in the trading post, and Ye hole in the Ground*
Eleanor,
I do not not understand why ye seek to bid against me and those i reppresent?
If i aquire the knowledge to aid Johe and the halflings of Brandibuck i will immediately tell all those i consider to be their allies, so they can be rescued.
Johe is my friend.
I have already pledged to aid in their rescue.
I will then take the body of the foul mage to a group i have been in discussions with who will ensure that he can never, ever, be restored to life.
Why are ye so desperate to stop those i reppresent winning the bid? With what i have pledged above surely your eleven million golden coin would be better put to use making the lives of those in Brandibuck better, unless it is the artifacts on the mages body ye actually seek?
I was disgusted by the abusive letter ye sent my friend Rasputin, because he offered coin on the condition he would have the information required to save your folk and my help in doing so.
From that letter, and the torrent of insane abuse ye sent him, it would seem you are either utterly mad, or your interests lie elsewhere to where ye claim them.
If ye really want to see your people saved, stop prolonging the release of the information on how to do it by bidding against the consortium i reppresent.

*placed at the bottom of them*
Jack,
You claim I have something to hide. I do not.
If you wish to help the halflings, why are you not helping them? Us?
I have apologized for my words to Rasputin, though with Theus as my witness, his letters to me have not been written with a civil pen also.
I bid on behalf of the halfling people, and continue to do so. If your interest lies soley in the halflings, I beg to ask... why did you do nothing until there was aught else to be gained? The knowledge of an anchient archmage, and his personal posessions.
Johe has been missing for nigh a month now, many of the other halflings longer. You and your consortium had no interest then.
Now, you come onto the stage, claiming only to have the purest intentions. I have been seeking the truth of this matter since I first heard of it. I have seen the horrors Malakai has inflicted, when I journeyed to Fenghuul. I went along when we consulted the mage himself about these horrors.
You were absent.
And, despite this, you say that my interests lie elsewhere? I put it to you, Jack Flashblade, that it is your interests which lie elsewhere. You are bidding this money not for the lives of the halflings, which are a coincidence and a smokescreen for you, but for the power of this mage's magic, and his possessions.
Brandibuck would still welcome your aid in this matter. But we wish it not to be done at the cost of giving up the knowledge which caused this situation in the first place to other parties. We do not wish to see this happen ever again. We wish this knowledge to destroy it. Let us, the people of Brandibuck, have it to do so.

*Posted on fine cream parchment and written in flowing blue script*
Eleanor,
Were you replying to my message above, or some other message?
If mine, then if appears ye have missed a few things from it, such as what i actually said.
I never claimed to have only the purest intensions, as ye mis quoted me in ye missive above.
Yes, i am interested in the Foul mages artifacts. Yes, i want his coin, but i also wish to see the release of Johe, and ye people.
Additionally, the other fourteen people who have aided me in this plight were mainly concerned with ensuring the dark mages permenant demise, and the freeing of ye folk.
I never said your interests lied elsewhere.
I merely said that it appeared by the torent of abuse you sent Rasputin, that ye were insane, or ye interests lied elsewhere.
I would also be watchful that Theus does not strike ye down, as Rasputins tone was more than civil concidering the torrent of insane abuse and mad blabber ye sent him.
Mayhaps so many have supported me, is that i at least appear sane. i am also well known as a man of my word.
I also implied that if your main interest in the auction was to free Johe and the halflings, and see the foul mage slain forever, ye would let us win the auction as we have given our word to do this, and use your eleven million gold to instead improve the lives of the people of Brandibuck.
I dont understand why to continue to prolonge your peoples capture by bidding against us if your main interest is to see them free'd and the Dark mage destroyed?
Maybe now ye can read what i actually wrote and reply to my message based upon that.

Jack,
You are entitled to believe what you wish. If Theus feels my actions to be wrong, then he may smite me down.
The People of Brandibuck do not wish to see their kin used as pawns by one who admits that he wishes the artifacts of the archmage, and his coin.
I will not do this, nor will my kin see this happen.
The 11 million gold will be used to make Brandibuck a better place, and to ensure that we are never again abandoned by tall folk who jump at the chance to "help" us, insodoing forcing us to the sidelines of our own affairs, and serving themselves most of all at the same time.

*the following petition is placed aside the slate in Brandibuck*
To the folk of the lands,
We, the people of Brandibuck, beg you to return our lost kin. We beg you to help us restore them to life, and we beg you that you no longer use us as pawns in your games.
We beseech those of you who consider yourselves true of heart to give your gold to us, and those we support...rather than to humans who jump at the opportunity to gain power for themselves, using our kin as leverage. We urge you to remember that these people, were they true of heart, would have tried to help long ago.
Please, do not use us as pawns in your gains, as pawns to gain power for yourselves. Give your gold to Winky, in Ye Hole in De Groude Inn, and allow us to see an end to the wickedness of Malakai Fenghuul ourselves, and to secure his magic so that it can never be abused again.
*The petition is signed by a huge number of halflings and gnomes, though by no means the whole population of Brandibuck. Around Brandibuck, rumors begin to fly of the protection that they could benefit from if Eleanor wins... magical machines to defend their gates, even wards to keep out Ettins and Undead altogether...*
*However voices of discontent can also be heard, stating how they would rather have the eleven million gold -and- their kin back...more than some ambiguous promise of magic and such fancies. Cold hard cash better than pipe dreams from Winkys special weed.* |

Re: *notices next to the auction slate* Posted: 27 May 2005 02:31 PM |
*as clean a piece of parchment as can be found, slightly crumbled, and looking re-used, is pinned with the other notes*
I, Rasputin of Elbereth, state here that it is my intentions to see the halflings freed along with my friend Johe. I have never said otherwise and have never intended otherwise. I was approached by Eleanor and asked for aid, as I was also approached by Jack - a fellow I know and trust. I assured Eleanor that I would do all I could to aid the halflings as best I thought I could - and this is what I am doing.
I have apologized for my words to Rasputin, though with Theus as my witness, his letters to me have not been written with a civil pen also.
Perhaps an old man can be forgiven for getting slightly upset upon reading such words as:
Buckshire damns you, and I hope the Mother is less merciful to you as you tumble, so fired by greed, from grace.
Although I hardly think my reply was uncivil given the circumstances:
I take great offence at your words young lady and confess to not understanding them at all. I have never betrayed the mother, and never would - and consider you in the lowest possible light for even suggesting such a thing. You say I am fired by greed - which I understand not at all either. How can this be so? I singlehandedly gave up millions in gold to a dragon to save one part of the realm of Ferein. Are you mad? The elves have once more haughtily ignored those that helped them, choosing to not even tell me of their donation to you. Although I am glad they have chosen to help and are putting forward aid in this matter. In all of this, it is the innocent who are in need of help and Johe, not the will or needs of others. I am at a loss for how to interpret your letter or the how and why of you sending it - when I am trying to help in the best way I can. I know this fellow Jack and have fought beside him and bled with him. I do not see why you think there is duplicity involved in this.
I would think very carefully indeed about calling upon the witness or actions of gods before then stating facts which at best, are altered to seem more favourable.
At any rate, if there are those that seek to gain from this auction - seek to gain other than just the freeing of the halflings - then that is their choice and right. I have never claimed to be one of those, rather promised to be a steadying hand, a guiding light if you will, in ensuring that the halflings are freed.
I did suggest long ago that the halflings would be best served by both Eleanor and Jack speaking and coming to some arrangement. However, this never occured as with some distain my old friend was cast in an evil light.
Sometimes we all must do what we must, and make the best of it. I have many and many obligations laid upon me from my adventures so far. I have given my word that I seek to free those imprisoned and that I do not wish the mage restored - rather I would see him destroyed utterly, not just lain in a peacefull grave for what he has done. Many seem able to cast aspesions and cast stones in this matter, I would have thought that the choices were supprisingly obvious. Both parties seem to want the same thing in a different manner.
I call upone Eleanor and Jack to come together on this matter, before witnesses, and reach an agreement. I already have Jack's word that the information on freeing the halflings and Johe will be given to me and any I deem trustworthy to come along and help rescue them. Indeed, Captain Flashblade has pledged to aid me and come along personally to help free them all from wherever they are held. If both parties seek the freeing of the captives and the removal of the body, why then can an accord not be made. Eleanor, if all you desire is to sell the items this fellow has, then why not do so before so to speak? To Jack if that is his wish. The freeing of the halflings is what Brandibuck needs, and Jack desires that and the other items offered at the auction. Surely such money can indeed be better used to create a safer Brandibuck - rather than assuming that the mind of such a fell mage will contain answers.
There seems to me such xenophobia here - so many 'tall people against the little people' when it is indeed not such a thing at all.

*note pinned below Eleanors*
Eleanor,
before i thought ye may be mad.
Not it is strikingly obvious that ye are.
The consortium i reppresent have sold and borrowed a huge amount to win this auction, and part of the reson those some of us did was to save ye people. I have even forfeited my own soul if i do not keep up my repayments.
If this is using your people as pawns then i would happily be used as one!
Mayhaps, as ye started this public discussion, you may wish to reply to my prior points?
And if you do not want the artifacts of the archmage, then let me win and save ye peoples coin.
Otherwise, do not critisise some of us for wishing them.

*yet another note added to the notice boards*
There are those who seek the knowledge of Malakai for their own selfish purposes. Those of friendly countenance and of wicked heart.
Cantor seeks to bring this mage back to life. This must not happen. He must not be supported. His evil and treachery must never again surface
A group of self interested rogues, people who regularily threaten the lives and well being of others is behind another bid. They seek the mages knowledge for who knows what fell purpose.
Rasputin, I fear you have chosen unwisely. On your concience be it if your support gives aways Malakai's fell knowledge to those who would use it again to create new abberations that are by their very nature an affront to the mother and all she stands for; but it is not for me, a priest of Vastaldoriun, to educate you in the ways of the mother as you would know better than I.
My support is with those I know to be true in their intentions to ensure that Malakai and his foul knowledge stays forever gone from the lands.

The scribe nods uncomfortably, he could tell the dwarf was getting upset, but he was generally a jovial sort, and he paid well. With quill in hand the young scribe wrote word for word just as Tolith spoke it, or as close as he could get to the dwarfs dialect.... ======================================================= Miss Eleanor , Winky, Brandibuck Vale, an' all th' families an frien's of th' 'alflin victims o' this tragedy,

After the bid that was made by Jack has been written, Blanche looked at the various letters pinned next to it and sighed. She looked at Winky a moment and shook her head.
"I can't help anymore, Winky...You know I would if I was able to" she said softly with a comforting smile. It was all she could do.
She frowned and took a quill after a moment.
---
To those who seek power,
Please. Stop it. Those who are trying to win the bid, those from Brandibuck, are not doing this to annoy you. Where were you when it started? Were you patrolling? When no one knew who it was?
Please...they do this for their honor, for their family. And it is normal that they don't trust those who are taller than them, because only a few really cared about it. We have nothing to say against them, we should even apologize for our inaction.
I am begging you, please, stop this madness, and stop this....greed...please.
Blanche La Belle.
---
She pinned the letter and sighed.
"I hope they'll listen, Winky...I really hope." she said softly smiling. |

Re: *notices next to the auction slate* Posted: 28 May 2005 09:15 AM |
I, Cantor, do not seek to return the mage Malakai to life. My interest in this auction was in the items of power Malakai possessed and I believe the price of this auction has ballooned far past what those items are worth. My only remaining interest in this auction is in seeing that my friend Johe is returned to us. I have thrown my support in with Jack as I believe he is the most likely to see Johe and the other halflings returned safely.
Elaenor and Luther have been blinded to the good of Brandibuck by their own self-righteousness and greedy desire for glory. Granted, Jack, and at one time myself, desired the wealth of Malakai but that is a much less insidious motive than seeking to elevate oneself as some sort of all-mighty benefactor.
If this faction led by Elaenor truely cared for the missing halflings and nothing else, they would end this auction now and spend their huge amounts of gold on more reliable means of defending Brandibuck. |

Re: *notices next to the auction slate* Posted: 28 May 2005 10:03 AM |
You claim that humans are more likely to restore halflings to freedom than their own people?
We also do not soley care for our missing kin, much as they are important to us. For the knowledge of this archmage must be destroyed forever, lest these events happen again.
We also care to ensure that their items do not fall in the hands of fell parties. We will not see our kin used as a smokescreen for the gaining of the power of this archmage.
I do not wish to be seen as an almighty benefactor. From the start, I attempted to remain as anonymous as possible. Yet, the need arose to show that Brandibuck was bidding for our kin. I do not wish the prize of praise, or the glory of my people. My gold will be used for good, whether we win this auction or not.
For the moment, however, I must do all in my power to ensure that my kin are freed, and that the knowledge of Malakai Fenghuul does not fall into the powers of fell forces.
Such as yourself.

To the holder of the current bid, or those who win the auction.
If ye wish to contact me privately, i give ye my word your identity will remain a secret.
I would like to assist in Johes rescue, if ye will accept my aid.
I expect ye will have many debts of ye own and as my consortium have such a large chest of gold i was wondering if ye would concider selling to us any of the following..
The information required to free Johe and the Halflings, if ye yourself are not planning on useing it to free them.
The possessions upon the body of the dark mage
The three questions askable to him
The body its self, upon the condition i immediately take it to someone who will ensure that never ever again will he be restored to life.
If ye would sell any of the above, please let me know how much ye would charge and any additional terms.

*the writing is smooth and flowing, with perfectly formed lettering, written in an eye catching green luminous ink that shines at night, making it perfectly legible even then*
To all those not blinded by the light, hear our words, these are the combined opinions of the Mage Tower Naillamne, acting as is our sworn duty to protect the lands in times of dire need. We believe such a time is upon us now.
The gates of Netharu opened, and demons were once more freed from their captivity, due in part to the rash actions of the ones known as Luther and Elvalia. Their prejudices and hatred for the mage named Malakai prevented them heeding his words, and so, one by one, the wardstones that sealed Netharu were found and broken by the demons.
Now again their prejudices and hatred places our land in jeopardy. This time a danger far worse than even the opening of Netharu. And they bind the one known as Eleanor to their path.
As such, they and any that associate or aid them are pronounced enemies of Naillamne until such time as they turn from the path they walk. Any that aid them financially or otherwise will be similarly viewed.
We have never taken such a measure before, and hope they will come to their senses. Here follow our reasons:
The mage Malakai is the only survivor of the ritual that closed Netharu. His permanent demise will result in the loss of the knowledge of how this was achieved.
Malakai is the only magi who knows the secrets as to how to slay demonkind permanently and irrevocably. It is his presence in our lands, and his control of his army of "children", that prevents Lord Numen and his kin from walking our lands as and when they choose. Even Lord Numen would not be safe from his magics, and so rarely ventures forth. Removing this protection will plunge the lands into darkness. For normally, when a demon is slain, its essence returns to the depth of Netharu, little more than an inconvenience. Confirm our words with those wise in such things if you must, we speak truly.
Malakai's "children". Yes, some see these as an abomination. But they present no danger to civilised lands whilst he lives and controls them. And they hold special powers against demon kind. But without Malakai, they will soon travel forth and wreak such carnage as has never been known.
Malakai's acts. Which some deem insane, or "evil". Perhaps there is truth to this. But Eleanor was told by our representative that with just one of these questions she could bind Malakai to an oath whereby no such act could be carried out by him again. Yet still this was not enough.
....
Now is not the time to stand idly by. Now is not the time to be blinded by the light. Now is the time to act, and ensure cataclysm is not brought down upon the lands. Do not doubt our words simply because we practise arts deemed dark, as with every tower of magery, we are sworn to uphold certain oaths. We stood aside Kaazim and Ladriel when the time to seal Netharu came. We know of what we speak, we are not children stumbling about the land causing untold harm. This madness must stop, take whatever precautions you must, Malakai must live and return to his lands.

*scrolls bearing the seal of Kaazim appear soon after*
We can neither confirm nor deny all the mages of the "Dark Tower" claim. Their knowledge of demonology far exceeds our own. Much of what they say is plausible. Some of it we know to certainly be true. Including the oaths they are sworn to protect these lands against certain threats.
But as many can imagine, the mages of Naillamne are known to mix truth and lie. And are capable of doing so here. Heed their words, but follow them not blindly. Let neither the light nor the darkness bind you.
And know that Eleanor Thorn is under our protection. We will not stand by and see her harmed.

The scribe reads the long message from Dracon Varayle to Tolith. The old dwarfs face reddens more as the message is read.
By the time the scribe finishes the message the old dwarfs face is as red as his hair and beard.
He slams a small sack of coin down for the scribe and storms off grumbling....

Eleanor, you are letting your pride come between Johe and his release. You said it yourself. Humility is a virtue. End this auction.

*a notice on what looks like dried skin, and placed only aside the slate in PAJWT. The ink is black and looks like some form of ichor*
To the one known as Jack Flashblade,
I know of your treachery. You will share Malakai's fate, and your screams will echo through the ages. You have my word on this, and as you know, my oath once given is never broken.
