Dependable crashes Posted: 15 May 2005 06:26 PM |
Hey folks,
Salt would like to apologize for tedious crashing throughout today's adventure. That last time it got him what he really deserved--brained by a hill giant!
I have four areas now that cause NWN to crash, returning me to my desktop partway through the transition into that area. Gladden Hills is one, and I discovered two more today--every time I had to make my way through to the realm of the mountain king I crashed during that transition. I can't remember the names of the other two areas...
Anyway this happens every single time I enter that area. It doesn't kick me to NWN with a message that my connection timed out, the game quits unexpectedly and I'm looking at my desktop. When I restart NWN and join the server I am past the transition into the troubling area and can rejoin my party. Does anyone else experience anything like this (I know everyone crashes, but during one or a few particular area transitions)?
I've thrown out my hak files and downloaded/unpacked fresh ones...I haven't done a fresh reinstallation of NWN for a while, so maybe that would help. I'll noodle around with it...
Suggestions?

| Id try the reinstallation of NWN next. If youre still having the problems Id look into graphics/ sound card drivers. |

I got about 17 crashes in today's event (yes, I kept count). It's not the first time it happened to me, and probably wont be the last, but it seems to have specifically happened in the DM events of the last days.
Each of these crashes seemed to have been preceeded by some bug caused by an excessive amount of lag, which made me drop back to my desktop. Today was just the straw that broke the camel's back. 17 crashes is too much.
Does anyone have /any/ idea why is it happening? Anyway I could fix it? |

| Do you have your override folder full of things? That's the only think that comes to mind for me. |

Boy there's a ton of stuff in my override folder. Buncha .mdl and .plt files w/ 2003 and 2004 modification dates. Few other things. Its built up like like plaque!
Should of said in the first place: I had a great time. |

Well, I remember back in the day when I had such issues I couldn't play anymore. I'd say the solution was a reformat/reinstallation of windows. Besides, it makes the computer feel good! :D
If worst comes to worst, you could just RP that Salt is afraid of mountains or something.... :P |

Gladden Hills and the Realm of the Mountain King both use the same hak for the tileset........... it's also used elsewhere on Syn's steppes and a few other places.
Might be worth re-downloading and installing the first Vives hak (the big base one I think) as that's the one with that hak in ;)
Just a thought!

Now that you mention it, I always crash entering Syn's steppes too... I'll try that first hak again.
Many thanks,

I dont crash and its all rather good :P
Seriously though how much Ram do you have? I personally think that 1GB is what you need minimum.

| Why? |
Purpose in life: finding better ways of allowing players to kill themselves. Repeatedly. -- "...Cause he mixes it with love And makes the world taste good." -- <@James42> Lawful good isn't in your vocabulary, it's on your menu.

More RAM might be useful considering loading times and smooth gameplay, but if you meet bioware´s system requirements it will let you play the game without a problem. I´d try what Ara said, if that doesn´t work wipe the custom stuff completely and reinstall the vives haks only. |

I've upped my computer to 1536 MB of RAM, and havn't seen any noticable performance change from when it was 1024.

Re: Dependable crashes Posted: 16 May 2005 09:04 AM |
I’m working on a two-year old G4 powerbook w/ a measly 384 MB of RAM.
Vives runs tolerably well most of the time with that much memory, there are only a few places that are choppy (Port Royal waterfront is one of them…). I do seem to come through transitions about 20 paces behind other PCs, presumably because it takes me longer to unload and load the areas. I don’t really lag long and then crash very often, and when I do its usually my machine chomping on something in the background.
Anyhoo, I'm onto trouble-shooting. Thanks very much for the advice folks. |
