Tales from the Toolset Posted: 20 Apr 2005 11:43 PM |
Hi All,
Two things.
1/ I've added some rental rooms to the Broken Mask Tavern. I am not sure if I was doing it right, so I only added 4.
2/ Rental containers.. yeah, I know.. the counts are wrong and it has been a pain in the bottom. I think I have fixed the problem. I've added some additional information for when you manipulate your chests (now that sounded weird).
I'll go IG and reset the counts in the chests. Let me know if your chest still gives you a funky number (e.g. 9 items when the chest is empty)

hmm...
there might still be a problem with the rental chests. Could I ask you all not to use them until I get it tested and sorted? Shouldnt be but another day tops.
If you use the chests, you might loose your items over a reset, so dont do it please, just in case.

Re: Tales from the Toolset Posted: 21 Apr 2005 02:06 AM |
yes... I've found a problem.
If you store a container inside the persistent rental containers, the contents of the container will be lost.
e.g. a bag full of ingots will become an empty bag after a reset.
Your existing items will be fine. It will only be a problem if you take the container out of the rental chest and put it back in (or maybe even move it..dont risk it by trying :).
I'm working on fixing that.
If you have no bags/boxes full of stuff, and your rental container count is wrong, take all the items out and then put them back in. This will fix the count.

As per the essential info player guidelines that has been up for ages:
2) Do not put gold or containers (magic bags and the like) in rental chests or mailboxes, anything lost as a result of doing so will not be replaced.
So if pdw can fix it, great. But this is something all players, who are meant to have read these guidelines, should know not to do anyway.

Actually, it worked in the past. A recent change I made exposed, not a bug, but an incomplete feature.
Previously, everytime you added or removed something from a rental container, the *whole* contents were saved, even if you just added one thing. So, if you had a rental chest, holding 20 bags, each bag with 14 objects, this resulted in saving 280 objects to the database. Not very efficient and for rental chests with lots of items, it results in a lag spike.
(Please note if you do try to stuff your bags full and then store it into the rental container, it will work after I have fixed the code, but you will reach the point where the code that loads the container from the database will time out (the TMI errors that you sometimes see) because the server thinks that it is taking too long to load all the information from the database. This means you will lose items and they will not be replaced. That is why we have limits on the containers to prevent this problem. Stuff at your own risk, but we will not be entertaining any complaints.)
For those who care, there are 4 functions that are relevent. Two functions allow you to save/load all items in a container and Two functions allow you to add/remove one item for a container.
I changed the code to use the add/remove one item from a container, rather than save it all everytime the container was manipulated as it is more efficient.
Unfortunately, I discovered that these functions didnt handle the special case of adding a bag into a rental container (you need to also save not just the bag, but the contents of the bag as well). The add/remove 1 functions just added the bag, without the contents. oops.
It shouldn't be too hard to fix because the original code, written by Q, is excellent.

*bump*
The next reset is about 50 minutes from the time of this message.
After that reset, your bags should be safe in rental chests. In fact, everything should be safe, even across resets.
For those of you who's rental container counts are wrong, please take a moment to empty your chest and then put the items back in. This will correct the count.
Filled bags placed inside rental containers should work across resets now, or at least it worked in my version :)
Please let me know if you have any weirdness with your rental chests.
(I will get to player persistent containers, displaycases and mailboxes later next)
Also, if one of you does have a bag full of stuff, can you
a/ reset the count on your container by taking all items out and then putting them back in
b/ telling me where your rental chest is so I can verify it.
Thanks.

Sorry to be a pain, just a quick few questions
1) Can you put customised items in them (such as books)
2) Will putting bags of stuff in them still cause Lag? |

If you put something in storage that is not in the module (i.e the DM created it in the toolset and brought it in with his/her avatar) then it will not stay over restarts. |

| Anything customised at all that is not actually 'as is' as far as the mod is concerned, whether it be something as simple as a dyed suit of leather armour, will not stay the same if stored but revert to its normal self. You also need to be very wary of storing books in chests, whether rental chests or PC housing, quite a few are treated as unique items in the mod treasure tables and will disappear altogether. A good rule of thumb is not to store anything at all in a chest that has been changed in any way from the original - and I'd carry any books you might have, just to be on the safe side. |

Argh, that is the exact reason why I've been dying to get Bunt a room! To store his books! Now I'm being told basically to either continue having to constantly drink Bulls Strength potions just so I can run or to ditch the collection I've garnered! Why can I not stop using exclamation points!
heh heh, oh well, guess I'll just ditch that part of his RP personality and pretend Bunt doesn't like books or something like that lol.

Re: Tales from the Toolset Posted: 21 Apr 2005 11:52 PM |
Sorry Ranger.
If the book exists from the chooser in the mod, then the book can be stored safely.
Again, for the record.
customized items, such as armour with a modified appearance or color, will not be saved over a reset. the armour will revert back to its "normal", unmodified appearance.
unique custom items (items created by DM's outside of the mod and brought into the game) cannot be stored over a reset.
all other items can be stored safely.
Any questions? |

Re: Tales from the Toolset Posted: 22 Apr 2005 04:00 AM |
Just a pure suggestion (which I know to warriors is not a big deal) would it be possible to do something like, if you have books and a container to receive a bag specifically for books with 100% weight reduction.
This would allow us to RP that we have left our books some place else. I was hoping to amass a bit of a library which is in keeping with my characters goals, but which I'm not going to be able to do otherwise. |

I can.
The question is, given the limited time I have and the amount of things that I have on my list to do, is it worthwhile for me to spend time on it?
In this case, the answer is clearly no. |

UMD! I Need your help. Posted: 23 Apr 2005 05:33 AM |
Hi All.
It has been pointed out to me that Use Magic Device is behaving badly. Unfortunately, I have been unable to reproduce the problem locally which makes it very hard to diagnose.
What appears to be happening is, that UMD/Spellcraft checks are being made when reading a scroll that the character should not require a check for. And it appears to fail everytime? (not sure exactly what is happening)
E.g. A 20th level cleric reading a 1st level cleric scroll does not require a umd/spellcraft check.
The v2-64-0 mod has a lot of debug information spewed out that will help me track down the problem. If you discover something weird happening, can you get me a screenshot with all the debug information, as well as your exact character classes and levels exactly in the order they appear on your character screen. Also provide your skill totals in UMD and spellcraft as listed on your character sheet at the time you had the problem.
This will allow me to find out where it is going wrong.
Thanks for your help.

Re: UMD! I Need your help. Posted: 23 Apr 2005 06:22 AM |
Just to add to pdw's post, the problem seems mainly to be for cleric scrolls. Worth other casters checking, but it is clerics we definitely know of the problem with. And they dont always fail, they just seem to have to make a umd check for every scroll, when it should only be for scrolls of a higher level than they can cast.
So all the feedback pdw asks for above would be very welcome.
Cheers,
Sirac |
