The community chest
Posted: 31 Mar 2005 04:47 AM
Just a small question: Is the community chest in the 4 winds inn persistent? Only I know there have been times when as my higher level character I have thought about going to put things in there and then stopped because I felt it was a waste as they wouldn't survive the reset. Instead I have kept hold of nice-but-little things and then given them to smaller people I've encountered.
Can the community chest be made persistent?
Just recently I have started up a couple of new characters - and at least a couple of times when I went to it, the chest was even empty. Now I know it's only there as a bit of a helping hand, but it's a nice little feature and very helpfull at low levels.
Also - just to re-itterate a point that Solitaire made in an earlier post somewhere:
CAN PEOPLE STOP JUST PUTTING RUBBISH IN THE COMMUNITY CHEST!
How annoying is it to open it to find inside some dye, some firewood, catnip, fire beetle bellys etc. etc.
Thankyou to the crafters though, who occasionally put natty little things like cougar hide armour, iron short swords etc. in there.

So - I guess my point is this: I think it would be better all round if the community chest could be made persistent if it isn't already and if that is possible, AND if people kept it stocked up from time to time with things usefull to low level characters (+3 greatswords are NOT usefull to low level characters) and not dump junk in there.

What do others think?

It is persistent. And there is a max value on what can be put in there, so +3 greatswords are right out anyway.

But yes, please use it. Sometimes DMs fill it up, but that kinda defeats the purpose of a "community" chest.

Cheers,

Sirac

The chest is persistent.

If it is empty, it is because more people are taking things out than putting them in.

If it is full of rubbish...

(when I think of it, as a DM, I will go in to remove the rubbish)

Ahhhh - cool - totally didn't realise it was persistent. Now I'll put stuff into it, knowing it won't just be a waste. Excellent.

Yes and also ...

PLEASE DO NOT PUT PLOT ITEMS INTO THE CHEST - it is tantamount to meta-gaming

The community chest is rather empty right now. I suggest that we all put something in it at the first opportunity in the nearest future.

The reason its rather empty is most got tired of putting actually useful stuff in, only to have characters not only takeing their max amount, but doing it at resets as well. People were simply abuseing the thing from what I understood.

I'll put some stuff in there myself, thanks for the reminder. Out of curiosity, do we count that as an OOC item? I mean, I could clear out my perma'd characters in that thing if you'd like, but I'm not sure if that's really wanted either.

I've always thought of it as perhaps an opportunity for your character to grab something with a little magic that is an heirloom, something of use in the World.... so yeah it's kinda ooc by the means you get it, but I think it can be roleplayed in numerous ways...... an inheritance/heirloom etc......

Sadly it has ben abused in the past and that's why I stopped putting stuff in it as a DMSad.
So please please treat it as it is intended, or we will have to reduce the number of items per reset that can be taken from it.

Thanks

It would be nice if the items you take can´t be sold for the first three levels or so...it´s rather frustrating if you put items in there just to find them an hour later in that gnome´s (the merchant from the four winds inn) inventory. That´s the main reason why I stopped bothering with items, and just put in some of the potions I make now.

I have mentioned to PD that the guyver store was designed to be a better policed version of the community chest, however having the display case cut to 20 items has put a crimp on that, he assures me this will be fixed in the near future, once it is, I humbly suggest doing away with the community chest, I mean at least going to the guyver store is a bit more RP'ing and not just a freebie giveaway

The point of the community chest (in my opinion) is to make your character unique from level 1. Fore example, instead of having all fresh fighters walking around with studded leather and shortsword, we get fighters with items that might represent their past. I often put dyes in it for people to change their gear, and from the emptiness, it seems as if people are actually using them. Unless they go straight to the first merchant on the road.

I must admit from a RP perspective I never liked the idea of the community chest, when I read Lor's perspective on it, I like it a lot. However, perhaps instead of it being a garbage can that's abused, why not let the guyvers take care of the equipment side of it, and make the community chest a cosmetic chest instead?
ie a chest of various dyes and "sewing kits" that can only be used by lvl 1-3. Nothing is actually removed from this chest but is used. That is to say I open the chest, click on the sewing kit, and get to customise my armor, click on the red dye and then on my armor and dye it red etc...

Just a thought.

IMHO this is a great suggestion, and something I've seen used to great effect on other PWs. Where I've seen it used, there has been an OOC "welcome" area where your character starts off, and in that area there is a chest full of dye kits with unlimited uses, and an armoire full of different clothes (not armour, just clothing) of different colours and styles. None of these things can be sold in game; they are solely there to give you the chance to customise your character before you enter the game.

yes... some kind of IG way to customize your clothing/armor. I'm all for that

and although it would be nice to have this service either free, or cheap... even if it was expensive it would be nice (when you got to higher levels and could afford custom stuff)

Seek out Dante Vanderbrook, rather adept at tailoring clothes....No Armani or Vesucci, but he does so try *smiles*
