We are currently experimenting with persistent merchants again, hence the sudden bolstering of the various merchant's inventories.

Yes way.
One of the reasons that the persistent merchants were removed last year was because of the apparent lag introduced into the server caused by the opening/closing of their inventories.
So, I would like your feedback - Has the server become more laggy since I have added them back in?
If so, I may have to rethink the entire persistent inventory process.

| I've noticed with some of the merchants with updated inventories, you will briefly see what looks like the Old inventory, before it updates to show the new additions. Think this in Ferein.. can't be sure though |

Sometimes waiting for the database to load takes a long time.
I was having some lag issues last night, but like 20 guys were logged into the server. I'm gonna try to experiment when there's a few less people around. |

I've noticed, and other people I know mentioned it, a good amount of lag lately. I thought it was me, but it seems it's not only me. Started ever since the merchants, I think.
Just thought I should mention it... |

| I haven't noticed much server lag, but I have noticed that the updated inventories of the merchants lag when they load, most especially the ones with multiple pages. |

Right.
Large merchant inventories are a possible problem. I'm working on a method to address that.
Next weekend, I will turn them off again for a few days just to see if anyone notices the difference.
In the meantime, if you see any status messages like "TMI Error" blah, blah, blah "on_merchant_load", bug report it so I can deal with it directly.
Thanks for your patience in this matter.

Re: Merchants Posted: 24 Jan 2005 12:29 AM |
No,
delays in loading your own inventory screens are caused by one or more of the following:
1/ Size of your inventory (larger inventories require more data to be sent to the player)
2/ client side network lag (your connection might be temporarily slow to the server depending on the state of the internet between the client and the server)
3/ current load on the server (which is running lightly loaded at the moment)
4/ network bandwidth utilization of the server (which right now, is not a problem)

Re: Merchants Posted: 24 Jan 2005 07:20 AM |
I've noticed a very slight lag on the merchants inventory - not enough to get annoyed about though. Lag with a merchant isn't going to get you killed. In general though, I do like the change with the merchants - I think it's much much better now. You go to a merchant and there's a lot more on offer.
It was lagging a fair bit this weekend I found, but then I always find it lags when I'm around the Icy Vale area - not sure why but it does always seem that way.
Only status message I've seen recently has been the same one I always see - something about error spawning and vampires. |

Veran organizes the boxes in his inventory. It's twisted. "The four corners are for clothes, the alternating rows are for weapons, every three columns are for boots, belts, and gloves..."
He carries around more stuff that I thought existed. Then again, I'm not much better. |

I also did that for a while, mostly due to carrying crafting supplies. Since then I managed my invent a little better. But I only caused 5 seconds of lag tops! ;P |

That bit of the code was removed by Q recently, so it will not happen now.

PS: also, the new stackable crafting changes should help with your massive inventories. |

Re: Merchants Posted: 24 Jan 2005 02:41 PM |
Hey, if carrying 200 Extracting Alcohols is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.
Besides. Most of the junk in my inventory goes to the Community Cabinet (I have a whole new donation getting ready tonight). And I generally curtail my crafting supplies (I only have a two bags of crafting stuff, minus the extracting alcohols for a special project) by going on crafting binges here and again.
In other words, I only have about 190 pounds of premium quality awesome stuff. Wands, scrolls, jewelry, weapons.
In any case, as much as I'd love to enjoy the benefits, I disagree with the merchant system in its current form. What I would like to see is every merchant reset, and severe limits set on what each merchant will buy.
But what would be nice is a good arms dealer in Port Royale. |
