A Very Good Book Posted: 08 Feb 2005 10:33 PM |
Just thought I'd post quickly about this simply awesome book I've been reading recently!
Boudica, Dreaming the Eagle </color>
Here's a link to it on Amazon.ca which tells you some of what it's all about! If you also do a search there you'll see the others in the series (2 out as of writing, one forthcoming in March).
It's beautifully written and I highly recommend it if any of you folks are wondering what to read next ;)

P.S. If anyone else has a good book to recommend then post away! :D |

| I always enjoyed anything by Bernard Cornwell. His works include the Sharpe series, and the Winter King trilogy. Also, Patrick O'Brian is a very good author. Pick 'em up if you get the chance! |

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brian. A good friend of mine gave me this book after I graduated college. In my opinion, it is simply amazing, not only for the content, but the combination of simplicity and depth in the delivery.

I could go on on this subject for ever and a day! But yes, Johe's suggestion tops the lot for life changing books anyway. I am a devout atheist, but Bach is as near to a religion as I will ever know. Thus my sig... *grins*
For more rp / fantasy books, any of the following:
Anything by Robin Hobb, Tad Williams, George RR Martin, Terry Goodkind.
Those are my favourite authors who havent let their standards slip, and are top class writers.
Also Robert Jordan, and Raymond E Feists early stuff well worth trying.
Cheers,
Sirac |

I agree with Sirac, apart from Jordan... borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring
Another very good fantasy author: Steven Erikson and the Chronicles of the Malazan empire.
First book is Gardens of the Moon.
Enjoy it. :) |

Haven't met a Jordan fan yet who didn't also love Terry Goodkind's "Sword of truth" Saga... Though I haven't read any for a few years... although I read 1000 page books extensively in middle school.... Since I've graduated... (And moved to a house without a lamp by my bed side, oh and having my own computer to kill my insomnia time with helps *growls at NWN*) I've hardly found any time to read anymore. Most of what I have been reading has just been music and guitar books. (Yeah, I'm a total Music nerd these days)

Re: A Very Good Book Posted: 09 Feb 2005 04:40 PM |
| Thinking back to Middle School though... My favorites were Terry Goodkind, David Drake (Lord of the Isles) Piers Anthony (really young then, Incarnations of immortality) David Eddings (Belgariad, Mallorean... etc. ) Terry Brooks (Shannara *shrug*) Stephen King (Dark Tower, I'm a gunslinger forever. Lo' The fields of Rose! The only series that's competed for my favor with Goodkind) and I think I ended up reading most of the dragonlance series... How many of these books would catch the fancy of a sophisticated person like I am today, the world may never know, I can't stand reading or watching anything for the second time... except Terry Goodkind, but that's because he's still coming out with books, and it's been so long since I read them. |

Terry Pratchett and Dan Brown!
The latter is perhaps a cliche by his own success but both amazing writers. |

I have to agree with Sirac and highly, highly recommend Robin Hobb to anyone who hasn't read her books. I've just finished all three of her trilogies and they're simply fantastic. All of her characters are developed carefully and thoughtfully, even in the books written in the first person, and the storylines are just brilliant. |

Richard Bach fans may enjoy Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, another of those life-changing books.
Also whole-heartedly agree with Tad Williams. The Otherland Series was fantastic.
Two others I strongly recommend are The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold, which is in my mind THE definitive time travel book, and Millennium by John Varley (don't judge it by the movie!!!). |

Siddhartha...man, that was a mind bender of a book. I read the whole thing in one evening and couldn't get it out of my head for a week. Good choice!

Oh yeah, and lest I forget, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and the rest of his collection. One of the few series of books that I read every couple of years without fail.
Pure genius. |

Re: A Very Good Book Posted: 10 Feb 2005 12:48 PM |
The best series of books I ever read is the Dragon Lance trilogy by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. These characters captivated me throughout the reading & I also think back fondly on them from time to time. I will be reading these books again soon. As soon as I finish reading The Hobbit again :)
I also recently read the Tripod Trilogy by John Christopher. Great writing. |
-Melina Danicelven-Songsinger, Fighter-Druid Life is pain, you just get used to it.
-Aimee Victory, Rogue Be excellent to each other.
-Iris Tammarack, Ranger I'd have been here sooner, but I was busy coming up with that ham on rye line. |

Re: A Very Good Book Posted: 10 Feb 2005 12:55 PM |
| The White Mountains, City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire had been my favorite books as a kid. I reread them recently and was so surpised (as I often am by so-called young-adult fiction) at how complex the characters were, and overall how well the story was. Granted, the premise is a total rip-off of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, but the author freely admits that with some embarassment. |
