This would cut out on those times when you spend a few minutes trying to speak to a npc before realise no dmj's are watching. As long as one is online. Problem is they cant be everywhere at once, so have to choose which player(s) to deal with at any given time. A tool like you suggest would just mean players felt bad if "ignored" and DM's would feel harassed if busy. That way the text is highlighted more obviously to any DMs that are on and free to come and interract. The other thing to note is that your character may want to continue an ongoing story with an NPC via the DM, but if that DM has nothing to do with the story they may not be able to be of help anyway!
