Revealing Classes of Characters Posted: 11 Jul 2003 10:31 AM |
Learning about a character's class is part of the discovery of a character and can be part of the fun of RPing. Some characters choose to reveal the information readily (proud of their chosen path), while other characters are more elusive. However, there are a couple of situations where the classes of characters are revealed (without the consent of the player) to others in the game. We should consider removing them, if possible.
* Player Stone - When you display the list of players in the game, it lists the characters' classes. As a player you can change the display to only show your level (and not your classes). I would think this option should be the default setting.
* NPC dialog - Some NPCs insert your class in the dialog. How can the NPC know that! Especially if other PCs don't know it. This was noticed when another player was interacting with a NPC, and called him a rogue. Now this created a problem since the rogue character implied to my character that he was a ranger type profession.
BTW, I realize there are ways that a determined player can discover a character's class via other game mechanics (out of our control). But those methods require a specific effort, while the above mentioned situations throw the information in your face.

I agree with only showing level, as this is pretty simple and easy to see who you can group with, who you should talk to about things, etc. Showing class gives some things away, just as "immediately knowing the name of the person because their name floats above their head" does :P. If a rogue wants people to think he's a grand warrior, or a wizard, so be it!
