How to connect via. mIRC to our chatrooms Posted: 17 Jun 2003 08:34 AM |
The following is a quick tutorial on how to connect to our chatrooms using mIRC.
(1) Obtain the program mIRC and install it on your machine (can be found free from many sources).
(2) Start it up.
(3) It should take you to options, if not then choose options from the menu.
(4) On the connect screen click on the add button, then put in the description Darkmyst or whatever you like and in the IRC server box input 'irc.darkmyst.org'. Leave the other blank and click add.
(5) Input a nickname (preferably your in game name) and then press connect to IRC server.
(6) From the top bar (when it has connected) choose join channel, then input vives into the box and click ok.
(7) Hey Presto! You should be in there with all of us for (hopefully) some fun times! :D
Any questions or problems then please post here if you can, or try PMing us.

A cgi irc engine (for those who can't use normal irc clients, but can only connect through the web) is this:
http://www.darkmyst.org/?page=webchat
1) choose a user name and fill it in 2) for channel fill in #vives
Click okay and you're set. |

In case you don't have mIRC, you can also reach us by a web-based interface at here [www.hashmark.net]. Simply choose the cgi-client, log into any of their channels (#hashmark is best), and type /join #vives.

Just an addendum for those that want to register with NickServ:
*These instructions should work in any IRC client*
First you have to register with Nickserv (This only needs to be done once)
type the following replacing nick and password with the appropriate info:
/ns register nick password
You will now be registered with NickServ, however, you will have to 'auth' to NickServ everytime you log in.
To authorize, type the following with your nick and password of course:
/ns auth nick password
*These instructions will work in mIRC, there may be similar featurs in other IRC clients though*
If you are using mIRC, you can automate the auth process to work everytime you log in. To do this first open the options by going to the File menu and then click on Options. In the window that opens, expand the Connect section by clicking on the + if it isn't already then click on 'Perform.' To the side, put a checkmark in the box next to 'Enable perform on connect' and in the large entry box below, enter the following:
/ns auth nick password
Hit 'OK' and you should be good to go.

Has anyone else that connects to IRC through the Hasmark.net site been getting the Disconnected thingy when you log in? All it says when I go into it through the Hashmark site is "Disconnected". Any clue as to why? (Or another site that works?) |

Hashmark seems to be having a bunch of glitches today. There was a moment there, nearly five minutes, when I couldn't connect at all!
Anyways, another IP address you can try to connect with if irc.hashmark.net isn't working is irc.aau.cx.

Okay, hubbie says he doesn't trust IRC because it bypasses the firewall/virusdetector thingie. (?)
As I understand this option wouldn't be such a problem then because you chat on a website rather than on something installed on your own PC ?
I went to the link provided but have no idea what to do next. How do I choose a cgi-client ?(what is a cgi-client?)
Sorry for being such a terribly untechnical person, :)

Hi :)
Just click on the link above and then on the Java Chat button, that will get you onto the irc server we use.
Click on Channels at the top and double click on the vives one, and you should be good to go :)
Or you can type in /join #vives, instead of double clicking :)
Hope this works for you :D

I'm having serious problems with IRC.
If I use the version I downloaded it simply wont let me connect anymore and if I use the HTML interface it keeps disconnecting me periodically.
Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks |

Uh, did you change anything shortly before it stopped working? Does your firewall block mIRC, or your router block port 6667? Have you tried using a different version/client? Have you applied XP SP2 before it stopped working? Do any other IRC servers work?
Oh, and the html interface most probably has an inactivity timer, so that might cause the disconnections...? (correct me if I´m wrong) |

A better cgi irc engine (for those who can't use normal irc clients, but can only connect through the web) is this:
http://www.polarhome.com/cgi-bin/chat/irc.cgi
1) choose a user name and fill it in 2) for server fill in irc.darkmyst.org 3) for channel fill in #vives
Click okay and you're set. |

We have moved IRC servers. We are now on Darkmyst. (irc.darkmyst.org, www.darkmyst.org)
Their web based chat client is located here.

Out channel is still #vives.

To register, type in (in the DarkMyst channel) :
/ns REGISTER *your password* *your email address* (without the stars)
n.b. you can't register with a hotmail email address, but you can type in any old gobbledegook here like noname@noname.com |

Hey all.
Just a reminder that as we don't run the IRC server, coming into our channel means that you're agreeing to abide by Darkmyst's rules, in addition to our channel policies.
These can be found here:
Darkmyst Acceptable Use Policy
One of the rules is this....
Spam
Spam is defined by us as any public or private unsolicited messages. For example, joining a channel you are not a regular member of and sending a link; either to the channel itself or to members of that channel.
Any client found spamming will be AKILL'ed.
... which means that if you end up in the wrong channel, please don't plug Vives- innocently or not- before you leave. Just not doing it at all should avoid any problems where you're percieved to be spamming.
Thanks, -Barnas |

Ummm...I used to have no problem connecting directly to Darkmyst, but I just bought a new computer, and now I get this message, no matter what I do...
Does anybody have any idea why? :(
*** Failed to launch Ident server : access denied (java.net.SocketPermission localhost:113 listen, resolve) Connecting... Unable to connect : access denied (java.net.SocketPermission irc.darkmyst.org resolve) |

Re: How to connect via. mIRC to our chatrooms Posted: 21 Jan 2006 05:32 PM |
It means your new jvm doesnt have permission to connect to the internet as a safety feature.
You need to enable the permissions for the jvm to allow the java.net.socketPermission classes to have listen, connect and resolve privledges.

Edit: this post no longer relevant
Search your computer for a file called java.policy.
it is usually in C:\Program Files\Java\jre<version>\lib\security
edit the file with a text editor, like notepad
add the following 3 lines between the grant { ... }
e.g.
grant {
... stuff...
permission java.net.SocketPermission "irc.darkmyst.org:*", "listen"; permission java.net.SocketPermission "irc.darkmyst.org:*", "resolve"; permission java.net.SocketPermission "irc.darkmyst.org:*", "connect"; }
This tells the java software that it is allowed to connect to the irc.darkmyst.org site.
You can quickly test by clicking on this link
http://www.darkmyst.org/chat/chat.php?nick=javatest&channel=vives
Of course, you can change the "javatest" part to whatever username you like

Re: How to connect via. mIRC to our chatrooms Posted: 27 Jan 2006 11:41 PM |
The ident server error message can be ignored. It doesnt affect the client at all and in fact its better if you leave it disabled (more secure for your machine)
As to why you cannot connect...
Do you have a firewall enabled? Are you behind a router of some sort? |

Otherwise, the only thing I can suggest is that you allow someone to connect to your machine remotely to diagnose the problem.
