Any hints on typing faster? It's getting on my nerves, as everyone is better, hehe. I get really panicky because I have to keep up. That's what you get when you skip all the I.T lessons at school to play DOOM! bloody game GRRRR. That was a long time ago by the way :) |

Sorry.. I type pretty fast.. most of the time.... A product of Playing this game way too much.. Playing UO before that... and Extensive use of chatrooms before that... not to mention finger excercises... Guitar playing.... even a good amount of Piano. Any of these things will do it for you. Honestly.. best way is to just keep typing.
I'm sure the more you get involved in Vives.. the faster your typing will become... despite your stated Gaming history... I don't know. Everyone thinks I'm crazy Because I pried all the keys off my keyboard... stuck them in a paper bag Like Scrabble, and pulled out one at a time and placed them back on the keyboard... Whenever someone tries to use more keyboard.. they look at the screen to type something.. and just as their hands start to move.. they look down.. and then They FREAK out.. it's a great thing to watch happen for the first time. I certainly don't know if that would make your typing faster... I doubt it... It might make you look at the keyboard less.. which could mean faster typing I suppose.
Yeah... I'd try typing without looking at the Keyboard... even if it means typing really really slowly and constantly hitting the backspace. Keep doing that, and once you get faster at that.. you will start typing much faster than you could... uhh.. with looking at the keyboard.
Good luck! |

This makes me wonder...is there such a thing as typing too fast when roleplaying? Could it be considered rude to dominate a conversation simply because you're a fast typer? And is so, how does one control that? |

Well, in Veran's case, I just find Akril and let them go at each other. They sort of cancel each other out.

Yeah, when I look at my keyboard everything goes wrong hehe. I also tend to get real slow when the time gets to 12.30am, but that's probably due to my brain slowing down :)
Not sure if it's rude to type to fast, I get about one word to most peoples three here, but I don't mind, just means I have to come up with shortened acts of longer stuff, well something like that anyway. |

I don't know, Pickston types really quick and in short sentences, but I think that adds a lot of dimension to his character as well. Gives him the sort of hyperactive child feel. Also I don't think it is wrong to type fast, in fact it can help a great deal. I am not exactly a fast typer either, so I know it is sort of annyoing when you want to respond to something that ends up being a few lines past already, but I don't think it's a major problem. So anyhow, just keep on practicing and some day we will own the dialogue too. :) |

I am a very fast typer .. and also the type o king .. If my type o is easy to catch I leave it be .. but sometime I have some pretty serious type os and have to make an ooc edit note hehhe .
Would slowing down make me easier to understand in game? probably so , but sometimes I can't . I gotta hurry up and get that last line tossed in before the other pc is out of sight .
I blame originally the team fortress classic mod for half life for my fast typing , since when it was young there was no voice and you had to type . And when you have alot of people tyrin to blow you up and take your flag you have to type fast even if it comes out .. "ewnemioe asty fd;lawg" ((translated to "enemy at flag" ))
Probably would be better if I had had some typing classes . ((my school never would have let me theyda swore I was in there only to look at the girls )) |

Yeah, I got a LOT of typing skills from Team Fortress... I was kind of the Team Scout... (The Role, not the Class) Usually a sniper who was WAY behind enemy lines... I Told everyone what was going on... even if it was just a heavy about to come around a corner to where my friends with.... *smacks head* Sorry.. a Heavy Weapon Machine Gun guy. Anyways... When you're in the enemy base isn't always the best time to be typing... so I became quite a type sprinter. |

Didnt know I had such a reputation.
As for Typos, man I hate them. Im sure there is a Typo Fairy that just changes some of the stuff I originally wrote just because it makes what I say look odd.
As for learning to type its practice practice practice. Veran is right *coughs* the key is getting to know the keyboard.
One big tip, try and get used to using more fingers (no crude comments please). You'll probably slow down for a while but once you get used to doing this you will learn to type much faster and without looking at the keyboard.
Also, unless its necessary, I generally wont type more than a few lines without giving the other person a chance to respond as it to me is rude gaming and rude for my character to do so. If there is an IG reason for doing so, like drowning out Daimons rant, then I will. But even then, still only a few paragraphs. *grins* |

Re: Typing faster? Posted: 26 Oct 2004 05:14 AM |
due to playing NWN I type faster - and due to playing WarCraft I dont look at the keyboard while typing =p
My problem is with spelling.. so from time to time I just drop sentences because I am not sure how to spell things.. on the other hand.. when with Tom.. I just spells things like the sound, most of the words have their changes - that's how he says them.
This makes me wonder...is there such a thing as typing too fast when roleplaying? Could it be considered rude to dominate a conversation simply because you're a fast typer? And is so, how does one control that?
I tend to do this with Tom, as Calmeir said about pick - in fast short sentences.
I dont know how ooc 'rude' it is.. I know it is pretty rude IC and it feels like Tom is talking fast and a lot - but that's the intention.
Tho - with most of my other chars I usually wait the conversations to have 1:1 ratio of sentences between me and the other PC. (on groups however.. eh.. I find myself los]t more than once [mostly because I alt-tab to dictionary.com to find nice words to use =p)

Re: Typing faster? Posted: 26 Oct 2004 08:38 AM |
You know what I would suggest? If you are the self motivated type (no pun intended), get yourself a copy of Mavis Beacon and spend some quality time with her. It frankly doesn't matter what version you get, in my opinion, so an old cheap version will probably do the trick for you. In fact, my copy of Mavis Beacon is from the days of Win 3.1, and it still works just fine on Win XP.
If you aren't a self-motivated person, go enroll in a community college (technical college) keyboarding course. Or if you are lucky enough to have the choice in high school, grab it, there is no one course that you can take that will help you as much in your academic career as a keyboarding course, and it will serve you well for the rest of your life. I actually only completed about a third of the course that I took, but I still learned how to type well enough to get by, and playing computer games like UO and NWN online, and chatting, has improved my skills immeasurably as well.
The tricks to keyboarding with speed and accuracy are learning the keyboard, and using all of your fingers. Mavis Beacon, or a keyboarding course, will teach you how to do that. |

My suggestion is to:
1) Never use the mouse. Any time you reach for the mouse, search for an alternative keyboard shortcut and start to use it. Even as I'm typing this, I had to move back three words to edit, and instead of using the mouse I used 'Ctrl-LeftArrow' to move back and forth over whole words. Be one with the keyboard (as dumb as that sounds).
2) Play a game like Zork. That's where I learned to type.

Ok, here is when I am going to seem thick Errrrr, what is a MUD?
MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon or Multi User Dimension. They're only related to those old text based games. In a MUD, you have multiple uses wandering around a text based enviroment. Think Vives without the graphics, and you have a MUD. They are usually coded in C++ (at least the one I frequented was.)
They are mostly for hack and slash enthusists, but a few good MUDS for roleplaying exist somewhere.
