help with forum icons
Posted: 28 Jul 2004 01:46 PM
Utter newbie comment.. but I can't find a help page that tells me what all the various forum icons mean - 'new posts' is obvious, but what are the read pages, stars, blue pages etc?

Thanks in advance,

Kalniel

Hi Kalniel :)

There isn't at present a help page :/ All of this Website and it's back-end/Database (which is also used in Vives) Is the genius' Quietus's work, I usually only check out the frontpage and the latest posts, so know what I've read and haven't. This usually suits me just fine heh.

So as to the -exact- meanings of the Symbols, well, to be honest I'm not sure :/

Anyone else pay attention to these and can shed some light?

Cheers

- Ara

Well, the icons have their own little tooltip if you leave your mouse over them.

But to save people the trouble of figuring out what they all mean...
Blue Page - Post that has been read
Red Page - Post that has not been read
Star - Popular post
Lock - Post is locked, no more replies
Any of the above with a little pin sticking in it - Post has been stickied, and will remain at the top of the board

Think that about covers it.
*is still somewhat of a newb and even I figured it out* :P

Actually, the forums part of the website it not my work -- I downloaded a 'sample forums' app and added code on top of that. I added stuff like the News list and the Headlines stuff you see on the front page, as well as a ton of things specific to Vives like the dirtnap page, the registraion page and a host of other DM-specific tools.

So as far as these colors, I don't know (or think I have ever noticed) what these different colors mean.

Thanks for the guide.. but no tooltips appear for me :(

And.. hope this isn't being annoying, but is the quote post button a bit broken - or at least the interpreter for picking up whatever markup language is being used? It inserts < quote > tags but they don't seem to work (have replaced them with italic above).

hmm odd Quote post works for me?
The < quote > indicates the start of the quoted post and < /quote > indicates the end.
You can type these in yourself if you wish

hmm maybe it's my broswer then - you quoted but the text isn't formatted any different - I can't see where the quote ends on mine as it's just the same as the reply text. Sorry if it's just a local problem then.

Must be a local problem, as Sol's quote and actual post definitely come up different colours.

Ok Thanks, does that mean I'm the only one not using the extremely vulnerable IE at the moment? I'm on firefox.

Yeah, you're right. FireFox doesn't like < span style='color = olive' >. I'll fix it later today/tonight.

The website uses IE specific functionality. For those not using IE, you will not see the colors that appear when you quote posts, or see any embedded images.

For those of you FireFox users, the quoting system should now be working properly/fixed.

How about Mozilla? I usually just add the italics anyway for quotes.. but color wouldn't be bad too.

EDIT: Oooooo... purdy colors ;)
