Improve your Vives Website Reaction Time Posted: 25 Apr 2004 05:54 PM |
Just wanted to find out if anyone is having the same website problem I am, and if not, can someone suggest what is wrong my end please?
Every so often whenever I try to access the web page it comes up in the Status bar "Connecting xx.xxx.xxx.x" Where Xs are the IP number of the server I would imagine. If it doesnt say this it simply says "Connecting http://h00...... etc"
After a long while I get one of those Pages saying something about the server not being found or available or something.
Any clues?

It's a DNS thing... not much control over that.
You can try what I do...
Find the file "hosts" on your hard disk. Make a backup, in case you screw it up.
Then, open it with notepad, and add this line somewhere...
vives.dyndns.org vives.dyndns.org
Save it, then type this in your browser:
http://vives.dyndns.org/vives
Takes you right to it, and pretty speedy too!
Anyway, if you try it, hope it works for you!
Edit note: I updated the instructions here to reflect the ensuing discussion... The above will serve you well! |

Cool beans Merum,
That works wonders.
Alternativly, you can make the line as below. This way you dont have to change your bookmarks (or home page) and when you give someone a link they will be able to follow it.
vives.dyndns.org vives.dyndns.org
BTW.. for me, the file was just 'hosts'. No extension.

ahh... y'know, mine is just "hosts" too. dunno why I felt compelled to stick the ".dat" there.
Putting the /vives after whatever you put for your "friendly name" is important... otherwise the page won't display.
I have a bunch of them set up. For example...
216.109.127.30 Yahoo
Then, I just type "Yahoo" on the address line. It helps to bypass the nameservers when you can! |

I actually have two files names hosts. One is in c:\i386 and the other is in c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Which one should I be changing? |

c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
right click, edit with notepad
If you have never modified it there will be only one line in it (with some examples above)
127.0.0.1
Just add below it the vives site (what merum wrote)
