Player Handbook: Your Path to Stardom! Posted: 01 Feb 2004 03:54 PM |
The upcoming Edition of the Player's Handbook will have a Chapter on Vives' own fauna of personalities. You can star in this Feature! - read on for submission guidelines. This is open until next Sunday, February 8th. Don't miss the opportunity!
Submission Guidelines
All entries should contain
(i) a brief character biography of no more than 80 words, and (ii) filename of the portrait he/she uses (you can find out by skimming over the Portrait directory)
And be made to Aria via website PMs during this week. The biographies will be selected based on how they adds to the flavour of the world. It need not be characters that are still active playing; CPC (or dead ones) are also welcomed
NwN-manuals contains some nice examples of what we're looking at publishing.
NPC biographies also accepted; these will be added in as boxes in the Chapters on the area. Feel free to propose your own characters as well for inclusion in both the Handbook and upcoming versions of vives!

This sounds like a great idea...
BUT... (there's always a but ;))
It could lead to problems and resentment. If there are players whose biographies don't get included, it may lead to a feeling that their character is not important enough to the world to be included. This is a feeling I suffered from a lot on previous servers. Particularly servers where the DM's were not adept at helping new characters interract with the world - which is not something that I've ever felt has happened here, I hasten to add. But it is something that from my own experience that can rapidly become a problem.
Anyway, just my $0.02, and apart from that one niggle, I think it's a great idea, and I shall be submitting a biography post haste. ;) |

But Vives is a rare breed of server where something like this could actually work out. They may not get everyone, but with the speed of updates and so forth, I'm sure they won't be "locking" anyone out unless their bio just doesn't fit.
On a separate, but somewhat related note, I have never seen as good a group of DMs and players as on Vives. Had a little run-in on a DM initiated deal last night, and then went to Four Winds to discuss it with some players. And the action went smoothly to conversation, perfectly in character and just amazing. It was an entire blast!

My secret policy is they gets in - one form or another, subject to modifications - as long as they arrive before the deadline. Shh, don't tell anyone!

Yes, I was hesitent to welcome things like this and the "Whoever's roleplayer of the week awards" because I've seen that sort of thing harm servers I've played on in the past. But then I thought, If you can't do it successfully in Vives, then you can't do it anywhere and that'd really be a shame.
One question I do have, is what happens to the biographies when the characters portrayed in them change so much so that the info in the biographies is out of date? eg. If Queen Aquinas is disposed from the throne of Port Royal, and her biography entry states. "Currently the queen of Port Royal..." I assume there would be an update, but are there going to be updates for all the PC's listed there also? |

"Like as the waves make toward the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end, Each changing place with hat which goes before, In sequent toil all forwards do contend."
This is how I'm doing it... some very particular, established characters (examples include Merum / Neek / Pickston...) will be placed within the text in the associated section - in this case Port Royale and its wilderness - whereas 'adventurers' in the more general sense will get a section of their own named "Personalities in Vives".
And then, updating would be a task that hopefully can be commissioned out. In any case, we'll do the best we can and let whatever else unfolds itself

| OK I go to the portrait directory and see a list--how do I associate that with a particular char, or is it too late to submit profiles, anyway? |

Phoenix: could you please help post instructions here? (I'm not familiar with the processes)
As for the second inquiry, no, it's not too late yet - if you hurry

You need a picture viewer (search for acdsee on google). Then you can watch all those tga pics.
For the original NWN ones you need a program called NWNExplorer (from NWVault, search it there). I don't know the link by heart, but you'll find it. Then it's in one of the 2da files.... But again I forgot which one...
Gosh I'm really a big help eh? |

| You can also just take a screenshot in game with the character screen open and crop out the portrait. That's what I did, at least. But then they may not be the same, so it might not work as well.... |
