What do YOU want Rogues to have?
Posted: 30 Jun 2003 12:37 AM
I know rogues get a bit of exp from setting/disarming/taking traps and such, but it seems to ME (and some others) that the class is somewhat lacking. Post here any ideas for Rogues to get more exp or special thing related to their class (Such as rangers having triggers to simulate tracking XP and don't need bedrolls in the woods).

The idea up in the air is "Theives Cant" (Theives only language), and I was thinking something along the lines of not needing feed/shelter in city streets (to simulate street smarts)...post YOUR ideas here

There is a thieves Cant already.

Human rogue :
/dm [ say what you will ] will translate it into thieves cant...
But I think that if an elven rogue tries that they will speak elvish to me :/

Other than that ... need to think more about this.

Well if they recieved xps for all of their skills that would be a big boost for them. Like unlocking traps or finding a hidden room with search.ummm I really don't know what else to do for them.

I do what the voices in my head tell me too.

ok the frist thing is that we should get xp for using are skills right now the biggest thing i wanna see for rogues and i know its being worked on
but other then that alot of it depends on the type of rogue being played there are many diffent ways a rogue can be played so its kinda hard most items i have seen right now add hiding/stealth why not a armor or something that gives them +3 ac immunity to sneaks as i doubt you would get to sneak anothe rogue( actually its a werid thing to say as alot would have to go into it to decide if a rogue could or couldnt sneak another rogue)
maybe a disguse kit that changes are name for a short period of time so others dont know who we are? that would be cool and maybe break items up for thieves thugs highway men assains scouts rogues and the many other choices

Rogue/Bard Backloading
Posted: 30 Jun 2003 12:37 AM
[b:787a3dfd32]Rogue-Bard Loading/Backloadings[/color:787a3dfd32][/b:787a3dfd32]

This was from an earlier message that got wiped out; hopefully every idea is still here.[/color:787a3dfd32]

I think we're really looking at two closely related concepts: loading, and backloading.

[i:787a3dfd32]Loading[/i:787a3dfd32] is concerned with the XP-grants / growth of the class in general, whereas [i:787a3dfd32]backloading[/i:787a3dfd32] is concerned with the custom unique properties that classes get. I'll try to detail the backloading schemes later on for each class (ideas that we're having in mind anyway).

[b:787a3dfd32]Loading for Rogue/Bard[/color:787a3dfd32][/b:787a3dfd32]

It might be possible for us to add an 'active-search' / 'active lockpick' etc. Thanks to Mendel for referring me to a relevant source. The reason why this was not done earlier was 2-fold: (1) implementation-wise it was impossible to centralize it as 'a action', unlike spell-casting; (2) it's difficult to prevent abusal (set trap - disarm, rinse and lather).

As for bards, we're planning to load their BardSongs; that is, they receive XP for singing, which is dependent on their level as well as square of the number of PCs present. For example, a level [i:787a3dfd32]x[/i:787a3dfd32] bard singing would get, for number of PC audiences,

1 PC audience = 1x XP
2 PC audience = 4x XP
3 PC audience = 9x XP
4 PC audience = 16x XP
5 PC audience = 25x XP

Capping at 5 audience max, with each singing giving a deflation of XP, for example, at a 1% rate (which leads to possiblities of recovering by studying rare musical notes/stories etc.)

[b:787a3dfd32]Backloading[/color:787a3dfd32][/b:787a3dfd32]

[i:787a3dfd32]Thieves Cant[/i:787a3dfd32], as mentioned by skyde, is definitely one of the backloadings, maybe for level 3+ thieves? It'd take the form of a pair of widgets that'd allow a PC to switch back and forth Thieves Cant and their racial language.

[i:787a3dfd32]Disguise Kit[/i:787a3dfd32] is another idea that's being looked at, and would make alot more sense as persistent faction reputations are being worked in. The thought of implementation is that by Activating the item (only available to level 8+ rogues) they're able to temporarily change their appearance (e.g., inn-keeper/commoner) [i:787a3dfd32]AND[/i:787a3dfd32] faction reputation. So a 'wanted' thief can waddle into Midor as a disguised merchant...

[i:787a3dfd32]Musical Instruments[/i:787a3dfd32] have been thought of, but we don't really know how the balancing would work out. Ideas would be appreciated.

[i:787a3dfd32]Extortion etc.[/i:787a3dfd32] might be something that'd be of interest... I think Mendel have been working on systems like that. On a side note, I'd love to have darker alleys etc... [i:787a3dfd32]Assasin fighting style[/i:787a3dfd32] have also been implemented elsewhere... Hmm. Better stop piling work on myself :P

i REALLY like the disguise idea...don't think it'd be too hard, just make certain widgets (Kits) that use the debug option of SetAppearance, with each kit as a diff appearance (Innkeep, guard, etc)

Doesn't work that way... There isn't a SetAppearance() ;)

The way to do it is define a new set of polymorphs in both [i:9cc8320553]polymorph.2da[/i:9cc8320553] and [i:9cc8320553]nwscript[/i:9cc8320553], then use a new set of scripts to take advantage of it. Tedious, but not too much. Plenty of room for screw-ups tho.

Rogue thoughts
Posted: 30 Jun 2003 12:37 AM
Looking at the 2nd ed PHB, the following stand out:
* Climb Walls - entirely missing from NWN. Could be useful in many situations, but in particular, could be used with area transitions to create the effect of scaling difficult walls (activate check based on dex, level, thief level, etc.) that's implementable IG.
* Read Languages - another skill missing entirely from NWN. ROgues are able to read the basics in many languages. I'd love to see documents that characters can't read without a certain intelligence/thief level mix (particularly quest related ones and crafting related ones)
Just my thoughts, as always.
