I was going to actually create a interactive music system based on the 6 second Round cycle in NWN. Basically, I would create a variety of objects that played sounds when activated, and each of these sounds would be one "Riff" or a few measures lasting 6 exact seconds in a particular chordal syntax, or specific key. This would allow you to "Queue" each of these played 6 second sounds to string together an entire customizably assembled "song"

Veran, this one could seriously work.
Not only it would allow all Ingame instruments to have soundback of 30 unique 6 seconds "riffs", but would also allow every bard in Vives to "jam along" with each other while telling tales, or singing IC lyrics. This is really something to think about.

The idea is quite possible. Similiar kind of ideas are already in existance that work pretty well.
One of them is punkomatic - that can be found at:
http://www.newsandentertainment.com/zfpunkomatic.html
(Not to be mistaken to be the correct genre/music for Vives. Link is brought up only to describe the actual idea of possible music system).

This proves that it does not generally matter if you play the "riff" samples in any chaotic order, because in the end it will form a song in every case. All it takes to create such is correct timing, balancing the melody into a specific octave, and some testing.

The samples will likely have to be tested, mixed, and edited to form the best result.
As a media assistant, I will be able to help in the process of mixing the samples.

So it does not generally matter if you don't know how to play an istrument in RL.
Music-system like this will allow any bard to play correctly IC with realistic, and moody sounding results.

Okay, so this really DOES sound totally possible.
Insturmentation: If instruments weren't possible, even combat sounds and casting could be orchestrated. Placeables to be selected for combat sounds, and casting would be necessary, unless items can be selection-activated or self-directed since many items require targets, that's why I mentioned dummies in my other post. Really a music room/dungeon could seriously help. I bet a patch file for instruments with different .wavs wouldn't be too tough... now getting them each to have a "layerable" and harmonic .wav file... aye, there's the rub. They may have to intentionally made for that specific purpose. heck if you're going that route, instruments with certain riffs that go for a few rounds could be made giving time for instrument switch. Think of a bell choir: you pick up one item, play it, equip the next and wait for your cue.

Time Measurement: You'd need a room with a background noise that cycles on a six second interval in order to signal to the players the time code for rounds. ((say maybe a drip, or the mines background sound? perhaps in a dungeon or mine? Most important is that SIX SECOND SPACE.)) If you checked that link, it is basically a selection of sounds set on an equal interval (("measure")), and each individual sound is to be "played" for one "measure". That could be done, even arranged and scored to other players, but to get people playing together, you'll need some sort of measurement of sound. Bards with UMD will inevitably become the best musicians... ((most options)) I LOVE IT!

Oh yeah: LAG. PCs with slow or lagging systems could mess up the song. And partying ((group-ing, not drinks!)) in the music room should be discouraged. Items with visual effects may be fun ((EG:color spray)) but I'm betting that too many of those and we'd have system crashes before completed songs.

Scores ((written music)): maybe items that, when found, will make journal posts? Since you can have your journal open and do actions. These notes ((pun intended)) could be attached to placables, or even to carryable items. If they were items you had to identify/look at, then when you try another action it closes and you lose your score, that's why I say journal entries. Copying them to your journal from a description window is tedious and time consuming. PMs are always another option, ((you could cut and paste into your .txt files for your character's journal,)) but it'd be fun to get the music IC/IG. Ooh! Ooh! maybe people could quest for songs and it makes a permanent post in their questing journal... then people who have completed quests could do certain songs together. Maybe the first quest for the simplest song would give a victory song!

Jeeze, can we sork some xp into this too? Successfully played songs = some xp? I donno...

And most importantly: Winky's famous tobacco should always be available. =P Right Karli?!

Man I wish I were a game programmer. I ought to learn some programming: This sounds so FUN to put together! Am I too far off on those ideas? ((Recollects fondly his music school days...))
