WARNING!!!
Posted: 28 Jul 2007 09:57 AM
~Warning signs have been posted all over the lands regarding the dangers of traveling through the deserts. Horrid stories of various undead creatures roaming the sands are spreading from town to town. The undead worshipers of Kobai talk of a powerful creature leading them. The Undead Avatar of War. A monster of infinite power. It is said that those slain by the creature or his minions have little or no chance of being raised. Clerics of various religions have been reported to be slaughtered and taken away never to be seen.

DO NOT TRAVEL IN THE DESERT LANDS!!!!

~A quiet has come over the Port as trade routes in the deserts have been disturbed. The affects are slowly hitting those within the Port itself. It is time for action.~

I think I will make myself another jug of coffee - I am gathering Ashe useful items at the moment so hopefully he will actually make a difference in the upcoming battle (I'd love to see a one on one between him and the Avatar, that would be amusing)

The race.

They had moved through the hills of Gladden; the undead attempting to fortify positions with a barricade. The easiest route was blocked, but the endless tunnels of the mines proper would be able worm the team that had assembled to their destination.

Before them lie a strike team of undead, but they had come to end of their road, for they could not open the door, for they did not have what Tristian posessed.

Setting the hand in place, watching the door open, the Guyver taking point inside, scouring the interior for traps, and coming out to let us know of his results.

Ophelia's cry of "BEHIND!" was a mild panic compared to what they would see inside.

Inside that small tomb, was certain death to those that treaded gingerly. Johe disassembled what he could, and slaved over the last door, even accepting Tristian's own arsenal of tools to help him past the door.

Alis, Sanna, and Vrodo remained at the door, in the event that something killed those who moved forward: The hunter, the Guyver, Ophelia, and Talion. It had become enough of a warning when Sanna moved forward, to inhale the gases that would be inevitable to trigger.

Johe began talking to something. Talion arrived behind Tristian, who noticed the creature as well, and supplied Tristian with the gift of sight: one that Tristian soon regretted. Johe convinced the little (dead?) girl of a trade: The coldstone, her only toy, in exchange for Johe to return with a new toy: an actual doll.

The little girl placed the stone on the ground, which Johe motioned the hunter to retrieve. Never in his life, had Tristian Vike been so afraid to actually touch an object. He kept his gaze on the girl as the stone was lifted off of the ground, and placed into a bag.

Knowing that he would be prime target number one to the forces of James.

The team had left as quickly as they came, and Tristian prepared for the worst.

It came. Tristian Vike had ran.

Ran for himself. Ran for his friends. Ran... for Vives.

He whipped past Gladden, past Icy Vale, up the enbankment to the Ice Palace. Not bothering to stop and wait for any sort of formal or informal greeting from the sculptures of ice. He skidded to a halt, at the small ramp that led up to the chair of the Ice Mistress, Aurora.

"Lady Aurora!" An exclamation made without the capable lungs to actually make it. His knee dropping instinctively, out of more than just respect; his legs had given, and he could stand no further.

Aurora spun to gaze upon this man, who did not serve her, nor the Ice Queen herself.

"Ahh... You have returned..."

"I... I have the stone." Watching the sweat drip off his hair, solidifying into shards of ice before they hit the ground. Aurora gave a glacial smile.

"And where is my child of ice?"

He answered, "He... he is with the others... fighting the dead that infest the hills... he... he should be here shortly." He felt his body start to go numb, the exhaustion of the body rippling through his blood, echoing throughout his body, expunging itself through the pores.

"Lay the stone on the ground."

He done as he was told, as Aurora scooped up the rock with snowflake twinkle in her eyes. "Excellent. It is protected here. The undead will not enter." Tristian nodded heavily, the spasm in his legs nearly kicking his feet out from under him.

"When you are ready... I shall invoke a storm of ages, one that shall blind the eyes of the undead, for it is only then that you may enter the tomb... of the fallen paladin." Aurora watched the hunter's trembling frame, and concluded her business. "Speak with the others... rest... for the task is near done."

After asking for permission to rest in the temple, he achingly left Spirit Lake to find his friends, and pray they had survived the horrors that Desthades brought upon them.

The Daughter of the Lion
Posted: 01 Jan 2008 09:09 PM
The dead were still there.

Ophelia and Vrodo told Ulalume of the Avatar of War. Then, when Ophelia returned to Port Royale and the Guyver Shop, the other two went into the Kobai. In the canyon below the stinger caves, there were only smashed stinger bodies gathering sand in their hollow shells. The dead had raised a post and slid heads onto it like beads strung on a wire. Around that post, Vrodo and Ulalume saw them.

There were four things keeping watch over the canyon. Two of them were powerful ghouls from out of some abyss, and two were dead things with a blasphemous stink. Just four in all. Vrodo nocked a special arrow made in the Mirghul Forest to destroy the undead, and the once-paladin of Midor drew her blade and charged into melee with the things alone.

Where did she gather such courage? Later, when this fight was over and the two of them were safe, Ulalume said that Midoran had deceived the paladins into thinking that their gifts came from him. She said that it had been Elbereth all along who had supported their works. Vrodo did not really understand these things. But Ulalume had been seized by the Atalan almost a year ago, defending the Ferein stair from the silent assault that moved across the Mystic Wood. Now, freed, she served the Mother and resided among her Elven children.

The dead mobbed Ulalume and Vrodo quickly found himself unable to hit the withered things with his arrows. He slid his bow to the ground and charged forward to cut them away from her with his curved knives, not thinking to draw silver rather than the keen-edged assassin's blade. Soon the dead things turned on him. The blasphemies sunk their nails through his stiffened skin and infected his blood with sickness, stealing his strength. Neither he nor Ulalume could fight the things effectively; nor could they flee. Soon they were both overcome.

* * * * *

What prevented them from being slain by the things, if not devoured? Perhaps the Mother's love again.

The lesson had been learned. The dead held the canyons and dunes as tenaciously as they ever had. Deeper into the desert there were only more of them, and the strange posts that they adorned with skulls from the decayed and desiccated.

Vrodo told Ulalume more of the effort to overcome the Avatar of War. He took her south into the cold lands, to the place where the last legionnaire was entombed, along with the key to raising up the Lion of the Kobai.

Ulalume knew the story of the the Lion of the Kobai, and of his legion. She herself had been named for the Lion's daughter, and she told as much to Vrodo.

Vrodo told her that when the time was right, his Cold Mother would raise a blizzard storm to hide the cold lands from the eyes of Desthedes and the Avatar that he had unleashed. Then the tomb would be entered, and the last legionnaire would give up his secrets.

By the time they had finished talking, Vrodo was convinced that the time was right.

He left Ulalume on the outskirts of Icy Vale. She said, "You would be welcome in the inn, you know."

Vrodo knew he would. But he had pressing news. He brought it directly to Aurora at the Ice Palace. It took him very little time to reach her side and her ear.

"Mother," he said, sitting on his heels but raising his head to be heard clearly, "He has receive a sign, this Vrodo. The Kobai Lion, the hero of Midor... he has daughter. His daughter walks the land. She is called Ulalume!"

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

EVENT: THE TOMB OF THE LAST LEGIONNAIRE

((OOC stuff - I'm posting to marshal players for an event in the Avatar of War storyline. Mr. Sprinkles has stepped up to run this event, prolly with some help; the previous one concluding with Ritz's post above ("The Race"). In fact if you skim this thread you'll be pretty much caught up with the story.

I've spoken with some folks about this IG/IC, including Ophelia, Tristian, Amon, Ulalume, Saana, maybe a couple others. I'm hoping we can do this some night this week or next. Anyone who is interested in playing in this event send me a PM RE: scheduling, and I'll try and come up w/ a date that works. Alternately you could just post to this thread and we'll see how things shake up.

I'm going to start out suggesting this Friday night (January 18), maybe not so late. Something like 9:00 PM EST? How's that work? When we left off, this was high-level or epic action, but I think the golden rule of Vives - no limits on level or party size - should apply.))

((I've heard from at least one person who is closer to GMT. For those folks a game on Friday evening isn't possible. Could we consider Sunday (Jan. 19) starting between 12:00 noon or 1:00-2:00 PM as an alternate? Or possibly the following Saturday? In the end, we'll have to see what works for the DMs too.))

Alrighty, the DMs have set the following time for this event:

Friday, February 8 at 9:00 PM EST (that's 2:00 AM Saturday Feb. 9 GMT)

Not the perfect time for everybody, but it works for the mostest players.

Meet at the Icy Vale Inn. Anyone who wants to talk strategy, we can meet up in game between now and then. We're basically going to go with the group we have though, rather than the group we want (to paraphrase a certain jackass).

This event is open to all levels, but it will entail some very powerful foes and epic challenges. To wit, Mr. Sprinkles also has this to say: Get ready to finish with a bang!

I'm going to bring a mop.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Terrific!

Don't be shy - even if you haven't been party to this effort, if you come to the Icy Vale Inn you'll get recruited. This is going to be challenging. Help is welcome.
