1.Re: UMD scale is skewed

Okay, the forums refuse to let me submit more than a sentence at a time, so I apologize for the following:

Vives is in no way, shape, or form a low magic world. Can I ask what would lead you to think it was? We tend to have an abnormally low number of players of spellcasters, but IMO that is indicative of our higher magic gear level.

Also, the rules for Spellcraft checks for scrolls are provided in the 3.0 DMG. Can't quote you a specific page because I don't have the ...

(Yay! Multiposting is fun! Go postcount go!)

Low-magic in terms of items.

I'm sorry, but you really aren't correct here. Vives is an extremely high magic item world, with only the barest minimum of restricted items and item properties. Almost every PC of Vives has a full kit of magical gear long before they can ever even equip half the stuff, PC's can add a variety of properties to their own weapons, there is no control over static ...

If Vives were a low-magic world in terms of items, a +2 weapon would sell (quickly) for between 40,000 and 70,000 gold, and a +3 item would be available ONLY one-per-PC and ONLY through intense DM questing. Scrolls would not be available in stores. Nothing better than +1 simple weapons and +1 medium armor would ever be put in a store or added to the standard treasure drop tables. No item would ever give a +5 to a skill, no item would ever give a bonus feat at all. Glowing weapons would ...

And, if I'm a rogue with UMD and I figure out how to activate my rod of the ghost why is it I forget how to do so the next time I try to use it?

Rods will be looked at. However, to get to the meat of your question: controlling and utilizing the forces of magic is a dangerous game of wit, wisdom, and mental fortitude. You aren't just reading a scroll, or waving a wand casually, you are uniting yourself with forces (if you aren't a caster ...

And Barnas, you're right, Enchant Arrow IS a class feature... JUST like UMD is. THAT'S my point. UMD is restricted to rogues and bards, two classes who need the boost in effectiveness it provides.

What is your point? Do you think that Enchant Arrow should be given a percentage failure chance like we've added to UMD? Or that UMD shouldn't have a risk involved? Because either way, pretty much the entirety of the rulebase on the subject ...

1. say for instance you have a character who is level 3 or 4 and is a rogue or mage who at that point will only have 20-25 hps. if this character uses a scroll and fails, it will kill said player. is that what you guys want? players dying because they are -able- to use the scroll because of their class, though they fail to read it properly(fail the UMD check) and die as a result?

Can you give me the character level of Mars, and the hp damage ...

5. is this fair to players who are already many levels into their characters? ex. anyone who is level 9 and above or so who has no points invested in UMD will have a hell of a time trying to catch up and will they have to put all their points there so they can actually use a scroll. This doesnt seem fair to any of the high level players at all.

I'm not sure why this is an issue? If you're over level 9, and haven't put points in UMD ...
8.A plot without war.

Hey all,

I want to brainstorm a little on a plot idea here, get some public feedback from people, and eventually move into stage 2* which will be implementation.

I'd like to run a pure RP, no fighting event to really try to give some of our incredibly talented writers and storytellers of Vives a chance to shine. What I'm thinking of doing is staging an all PC-driven play using the Port Royale Theatre (which I love so much :D). Of course this would be an event where ...

I do not believe the Team ever intends that people will be able to access any area they want, any time they want, instantaneously. That will never happen.

If you can't survive Mirghul, you probably need to spend a little more time in PR or Midor ANYWAY, nobody should be making multiple boat rides per play session, galavanting and globe trotting like mad, at level (what?) 3.

If you're on the north half of the continent, the two boats are TWO BLOODY TRANSITIONS APART. You ...

Why not... Why can't non fighters like Blanche and CPC's like Barnas's Make trips acrossed the realms because of storyline Roleplay?

But of course the secret goal of this is to promote usage of the "Adventuring Groups" forum.

In other news, the "Adventuring Groups" forum has been sold to the Coca-Cola Corporation, and all further posts there will cost $2.00, plus a $.25 redeemable bottle deposit.

This sounds kickin' radical.

Question: Could random at-sea encounters be worked up? Pirates? Mermen? The Kraken?!!?!? :D

Well everybody, looks like this is where I give my goodbye.

It's been a good run, hope you all have enjoyed Vives under my little portion of care, and I hope you all will continue to enjoy Vives.

It's a good world, so game on.

Bye everybody.

((Every single monster I've touched has had their CR go down as a result of my editing. I do not at all intend to imply that this suddenly made the creatures easier, just showing how LESS stats/feats/magics, when applied correctly per the well balanced, well designed rules of PnP, can actually make for a far more dangerous encounter. I haven't raised a single HD, AC, STR, or increased the damage/properties of a single creature item. Not one.))

(Hopefully some kind soul can edit these togther for me again. :D)

The players have no right, nor any reasonable expectation, to insider knowledge about the strength, placement, type, or tactics of monsters. Ever.

If this were PnP, hypothetically, do you honestly believe that a DM would ever say, "oh hey, just so you know, I may have decided to use a different monster than usual in a dungeon," or, "now guys, I've decided to give this paticular encounter a ...
17.Re: Travellers Warning
Posted by Figleaf on 7/11/2004 3:13:27 PM
That would never happen, nor should it. The very fact that you believe you need a warning when the mechanics of a given monster change tells me that the players of Vives have become WAY too complacent in how they view the world.

If a new monster spawns in an area, or a give monster's tactics or stats change, that means the DM's are trying to suprise you. That is exactly what we are doing, we are trying to suprise you. So that you stop looking at an ettin and doing the math in your ...

Sure, leveling up is fun. But it is the opinion of the team and hopefully players of Vives that roleplay is MORE fun, and part of roleplay is living through the mind of your character be you talking or fighting. If you go into a fight with your teeth on edge and holding your breath, then IMO the team has done its job in making the world MORE believable and MORE fun.
