| 2. | Re: *** THE BLACK HAND *** Posted by DiabloStan on 6/29/2005 4:13:50 AM Black whiskers poked out from each side of the peculiar gnome's face as he walked into P&J's dragging an unnaturally large sack behind him. He pulled a tiny note from his pocket, read it carefully, looked to the right, nodded, and started shuffling for the stairs.
The eccentric little gnome dragged himself and his large bag all the way to Mister Jessup's door, knocking briskly until Jessup answered, a scowl on his teeth, his hair in disarray, and a rather unpleasant odor ... |
| 3. | Re: *** THE BLACK HAND *** Posted by DiabloStan on 6/30/2005 5:22:22 PM "Tomorraz I gotsta give ya a few keys, Baltorz, an' one udder t'ing jus' in case dis all goes sours..." Jessup's slur wandered through the lobby of P&J's.
"What udder t'ing?" The dwarf raised his eyes, a little curious. For all intensive purposes, Balthor was inheriting the Tour House in the event of Jessup's death. Granted, there was a good chance that the Tour House wasn't gonna be there if that occured, but the end result was that everything in the building ... |
| 4. | Re: *** THE BLACK HAND *** Posted by DiabloStan on 6/30/2005 5:35:59 PM I grew up on the streets.
Living on the streets of a city like Port Royale isn't what most people expect. Heh. Most people can't fathom what happens out there every day. I know guys'll split their own mothers' back if the price is good enough. And I know guys who'll sell their own father if it means they can eat another few days. Life is gritty, life is nasty, and all you people who sit in Ms. Miggins and chomp down your meat an' ale pies and joke, and think you know about the dark ... |
| 5. | Re: *** THE BLACK HAND *** Posted by DiabloStan on 6/27/2005 4:25:46 AM Crack. Crack. Crack. Jake was rather accustomed to the sound of bones breaking. A sadistic grin warped his rather plain features, and he muttered through his teeth.
"This would all be over if you just told me what I wanted to know..."
"G'aaagh! Please, please stop! I'll tell you anything.. Oh god.. my arm... my arm..." A frail looking man with a lot of scars was writhing, trying to pull his way out of Jake's iron grip. Jake's grin widened into a ... |
| 6. | Re: *** THE BLACK HAND *** Posted by DiabloStan on 7/14/2005 6:02:22 PM "You and Jessup speak awfully loudly." Lothar sneered and walked off, head erect.
Jake just grinned. "Yeah, we speak awful loudly, alright. But Jessup carries an even bigger stick."
As he walked past the bar, he flipped a coin at Margaret, flashing a grin, and made his way for the door, and back out into the not-so-welcoming rain of the Port city. He walked through the streets, passing Lothar again near Gariert. He stopped, chuckling.

| 7. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 6/2/2006 2:17:00 AM I just want to say, to the Narrator.
Holy. Crap.
That was awesome.
Please don't ever do THAT to me again.
And of course, I would like to both thank and welcome my new friends Tam, Drado(?), Timik, and Kusil for the shenanigans tonight, I do believe that now that you've been scared by Balthor you've been properly christened into the Vives community. Had a great time tonight, really picked me up. |
| 8. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 6/2/2006 1:34:05 PM "Just think...Balthor has a new friend! Isn't that nice, Rob?"
Oh God. That is exactly the sort of recurring NPC that Balthor DOESN'T need.
Terrible for business... |
| 9. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 8/16/2006 3:45:01 PM Balthor Shmuckface Necrocapitalist
Yes, my adventure with Rosen Getuskilled Idgitpaladin went just about as well. |
| 10. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 9/29/2006 6:41:46 AM I would first like to thank everyone who came to the festival, that was a really great time, I love bringing out Bruce (you guys seem to enjoy his company) and I loved the magic competition. The improv comedy was great, but I don't think it really transferred well to text, personally.
I'd also like to thank Valethrion, Veran, Ayntherien, Annes'seh, and Benny for the OOC Arena hijinks tonight. Sometimes it's good to just goof off and murder each other a little bit. |
| 11. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 12/7/2006 6:47:14 PM [ I have to admit, Londo was one of Balthor's favourite people. It's a shame to see him go. Never had a clue you guys were the same person, although in retrospect, it was odd that Lou stopped showing up at around the same time Londo appeared. ] |
| 12. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 12/7/2006 8:21:58 PM [ Indeed! Arthur, hero of heroes, lives on, fighting the good fight... Or something similar.
Londo had me searching my old books, and racking my brain for new jokes to tell, and figuring out if I could alter them for an RPG and have them still be funny. Learning Londo-speak, going on adventures, Londo really renewed my spirit for Vives a lot. Thanks for that, really. ] |
| 13. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 1/2/2005 1:02:30 PM Being here for over a year and a half now off and on, I've had a lot of memorable moments. A lot of people who have come and been gone for far too long that really were important people to me.
Here's to Jade, Alenuska, Raimonds, Elliea, Coruva, Pokeundi, Pickston, Gene, Kriayna, Merum, and anybody else I forgot. I'll um.. Never.. Forget.. All of you. Yeah, that's it.
Then there's the people who have become the absolute closest friends to Balthor and Thomas and have really ... |
| 14. | Re: Shoutouts Posted by DiabloStan on 12/30/2006 5:58:12 AM I would like to thank everyone involved in today for making it possibly one of Balthor's greatest days ever.
First, thanks to Balthor's close friends, Fenn, Shard, Tristian, for some great conversation and musing. Thanks to Kalid for performing well as a lackey in training. Thanks to Val for... just doing his thing, don't ever change.
And I want to thank all of the DMs involved in today's events. Everything that happened today really is a bit overwhelming, but was some of ... |

| 16. | Re: Top Ten indicators that you are addicted to Vives Posted by DiabloStan on 4/24/2004 2:16:26 AM 34. You have completely lost all concept of time or daily structure due to ten to twelve hour gaming binges.. on top of working..
35. Because of your wasted sleep schedule, you adopt a new calendar, one with a 36 hour day.
36. Assuming that now, since you have more time to get things done in the day, you can naturally devote MORE time to Vives, and inevitably ruin your sleep schedule again.
37. You start to tell yourself that you're just "not wanted" ... |
| 17. | Re: I finally got NWN2 Posted by DiabloStan on 3/18/2010 12:27:21 PM I remember when NWN2 was initially released, somebody produced a list of like 100 legitimate things wrong with the game, and while they did work on that list, the truth is that as you make the game more intricate, you wind up making customizing the game way more difficult. What people wanted was little more than a graphics and rules update on the same system; if it's not broken, don't fix it, right? What they got was a huge hassle, and producing persistent worlds was way more difficult, if not ... |
| 18. | Re: An event? Posted by DiabloStan on 3/13/2010 11:47:49 PM Sounds like it could be fun. Regrettably, Friday, March 26th, I have a previous engagement and am unavailable. If it could be rescheduled for the week afterward, I could attend, but I don't expect you to do so. Free weekends tend to be rare for me; Tuesdays and Wednesdays are my most available times; perhaps we can look into another activity then? |
| 19. | Stay Out! Posted by DiabloStan on 4/2/2008 6:44:18 AM A sign placed in front of the Halls of Bregodim doors:
STAY OUT!
DWARVES ONLY!
Balthor hammered the sign into the ground, wiping sweat from his brow. He had spent the better part of the day putting out fires, cleaning up debris, and sealing tunnels and holes.
"Can't believe I found a dern elf in 'ere, Bruce." he grumbled, shutting the doors behind him as he walked back into the main hall.
"I know! What's up with ... |
| 20. | Re: Vives 2: Teaser Thread Posted by DiabloStan on 12/25/2007 11:08:49 PM Just a speculative date would be good. But seriously, really looking forward to it. I've already got a lot of dwarven stuff in my head, waiting to hit the text editor. |

| 22. | Re: Vives 2 XP Functions Posted by DiabloStan on 11/1/2007 1:41:48 PM "1) Players should gain levels at a rate similar to in normal NwN at level 1. The rate of gain of levels should decrease until at level 10 It should take many hours of game play to gain a level."
I think it's more of establishing how long it should take a player to reach level ten playing on a regular basis, working at regular speed. 50 hours? 100 hours? 500 hours? Naturally it should scale as it goes up, on a curve. After that, how long should it take a player to reach ... |
| 23. | Re: Vives 2 XP Functions Posted by DiabloStan on 11/1/2007 5:21:44 PM Actually, I almost like DiabloStan's idea, except that people would be gaining XP dungeon crawling in sewers killing rats at the same rate people would gain XP from dungeon crawling and killing dragons :O
Of course, if loot were scaled appropriately for the different encounters, that could be a good driving force for people to move on to bigger and better things.
And it severely reduces the list of things that DMs have to look for when it ... |
| 24. | Re: Vives 2 XP Functions Posted by DiabloStan on 11/1/2007 8:18:02 PM What's stopping a character from logging on and simply walking around for a couple of hours, doing nothing?
We offer exploration experience anyway. If you're walking around in safe places, you're getting much less experience. Just tweak the "Safe Place" multiplier until it's appropriate. If you're walking around in dangerous places, you're probably getting in combat. My final argument is that if you walked around for two hours, it would be ... |
| 25. | Re: Vives 2 XP Functions Posted by DiabloStan on 11/1/2007 8:40:24 PM A system should never be not considered based on how it can be taken advantage of. If somebody is doing that for 20 hours, or 50 hours, or 100 hours, chances are somebody is going to notice (player or DM) and report it, and proper disciplinary actions will be taken.
Edit - But honestly, who cares? If all you're doing is hiding in the bathroom, gaining experience, when you come out at level 7, what do you have? No crafting experience, no role-play experience, no loot from monsters, ... |
