*waves fist at Evanna (Jaded Prophets)*

9 hours in one room! Sheez! Others would have needed 15 minutes for that... but then, they would have missed the whole story of "Gladiator" told as an old epic tale from a bard - better than the movie, really! Cheers. :)

Nice roleplay from everyone, and especially Pretzels (again) - Hats off to you, Bel is a great little oddball!

Despite my predictions of never playing NWN2 I'm going to be getting a new machine in the near future, which will be capable of running the latest Mac OS (yeeeeeeeeee-haw!), and, I believe, NWN2 as well. So, I'm there. Still kind of in love with my Vives 1 characters, so all this is bittersweet.

Just to make sure:

1: You need a Mac with an Intel processor, no used Pre-Intel Mac will be able to run it.

2. Forget the Macbook ...

Speaking of haks, did you think about using Audolo or Worldgate? Can't comment on the latter, but I found Audolo quite useful, easy and helpful.

I agree with Arathon here. Having played in Thain as well (and playing around with the module in the toolset) I see no reason why Vives should change the excisting xp functions in favor for the Thain ones. It's not that Thain's xp system is bad, it's just different and feels more like the original Bioware system, while Vives has a very different approach that I personally like better, and I still think there's nothing wrong with it.

I can't say I'm satisfied with the current situation the XP system has created, but there are more factors here at work than a flaw in the system. I'd say the size of Vives has outgrown its own XP system - more areas, monsters and even spells.

Just out of interest, where do you see a problem here with the current system? Do you think there's too much xp in the pool now? From my own experience I think I can say that the "plateau" is ...

Well, it's probably a matter of taste and priorities. I always found the Vives system and the plateau it creates perfect for my personal preferences.
I do not enjoy at all the first 3 levels... it's just ridiculous that a single rat bite will kill my character, also, I don't see my character starting as a baby - I want the "base" I need for my character to be what he/she is in my imagination to be done as soon as possible, and the Vives system is great for creating that base, ...

Also, I've been around Vives as long as you have, and I have noticed during that entire time an issue with adventuring in groups that mix epics with mid to low level characters. It seems you have a different experience than I. All I can say is that in my entire time in vives, adventuring has never worked with that wide of a level range. If it has for you that is great. But I'd also like to hear what the general player base has to say. Again all these are are ...

So why do people percieve the system as being unfair to people who want to party up but don't because the are afraid that they will miss out on some xp?

Let's say my level 7 character had never killed an Ettin before. If I was killing one alone I'd probably get, let's say, 60xp for the first one and it'd slowly go down, like 50xp for the second, 40 for the third and so on.

But my level 7 is partied up with a level 20 who killed ...

I don't find anything in the essential information right now, but I was also under the impression that people travelling together should always be in a party. I thought that was a rule.

Personally, I usually don't reject any invitations from others to party up, the social/multiplayer side in me outweights the character advancer. But in some cases it has a bitter aftertaste. It's not about xp maximizing, but if my level 10 character travels in a group with a level 25 warrior, and all ...

In any case WA and I are pretty much the only people to have expressed opinions on whether the xp system needs to correct game balance. We will need people to make there wishes known if this is to be resolved.

Well, I'm still trying to figure out how to copy/steal/rip off the current Vives xp system for my own little building attempts and have so far not succeeded, I think that says it all, or at least that I consider it the best xp system I've ...

Alright then, how about point 6?

Who decides what is in character for your PC and what not? If you don't want a server full of stereotypes, I don't know how that should be possible. The only person who really knows what is IC for my character and what not is me, the one who created the char. I don't want to be policed like "you chose to be a rogue, it is not IC for you to save that princess from that tower, so no reward for you. Go ...

From my experience I can only say that the current system in Vives is /very/ multiclass-friendly. You want bard spells and roleplay value, you make a bard and get only 20% of combat xp, but 100% for exploring and 50% for spellcasting (simplified, no idea what the real values are).
You want a fighter, you get 100% for combat and only 20% of exploring xp and obviously nothing for casting, since you can't cast.
And if you want both, you get a, say lvl 5 fighter/level 5 bard who's getting ...

What you are forgetting is that any character is only fighting, picking locks, casting, crafting, exploring at any one time. There are exceptions, a wizard can gain casting and combat xp at once, and a rogue may (occasionally) gain ability use and exploring xp at once, but on the whole a character only gains xp from one scores at a time.

So a multiclass character may have many route of xp gain available to him, but his xp gain will be roughly half the ...

That was a very simplified version of what happens, and I know the Vives system is very complicated (as I said before, I'm still trying to steal it!Smiley). But here's the point:

"It's near impossible to say which will gain xp the fastest but unless the builders are very careful about what goes where. One of the two characters will eventually get ahead of the other."

All I said is that this system /appears to me/ to work fine. I have no idea what you're getting at, I don't say this system is complicated so it has to work fine, I'm only saying it /does/ work fine, and I couldn't care less about how many lines of code were required for it.

I have about 15 different characters in my servervault here, including everything from tough powerbuild to totally useless (in a game mechanical sense) RP character, and none of them had any apparent ...

Oh, I actually bought a new comp for NWN2 when it came out. I still had my old trusty G4 Powermac back then and a new Mac was no option, but I figured I can build myself a very cheap PC using all the spare parts I still had lying around from my Mac (HD, old burner that does read, but not burn, etc.) So for 300 and something Euros I was able to play the game. This summer I could finally afford a new Mac though, so I'm using Bootcamp right now and the PC is getting old.

And yes, ...

I still have no idea why people buy macs when more than half the software released doesn't even run on one. If I wanted that super-stability people seem to covet so much, I'd just dual boot Windows and Linux, on the PC I built myself and can upgrade whenever I need to.

I'm glad that I don't even get half the software, but only maybe 5%. The sheer amount of available software doesn't make a system better - why want to choose from 200 disc burning ...

Though I'd argue for a fifth category of storyteller, which is definitely the key reason why I play.

And a sixth category for me, story enjoyer.

I'm a little bit of all and don't like extremes. I like achieving something, but I'm not looking for power or high levels.

I love exploring (maybe that part gets a few percent more, there's no real extreme of that).

I like killing things as long as it's a challenge and ...

Thanks for those explanations, I didn't realize you had people playing single class wizards. (three ice storms at level 7? how crude!)

I may now create a new character instead of continuing with my rogue/wizard/to-be-shadowdancer-next-level now I realize how hated the class is. Just need to find where my new gnome bard can buy a tambourine... and work out how to roll play the tortoise... :)

Ah, tambourines don't deal damage. :(

have you seen concept art for The Witcher? It's one of those few games where I can't complain about loading times, because the loading screens make my jaw drop. Beautiful artwork, also worth checking out (you can skip those few martial Geralt-kills-monster-drawings):

That's a game I bought only for the artwork, and now I'm even ready to shed out another 60 Euros just to get the limited edition with the artbook (*slaps self for having bought the regular game*). The world design is as beautiful as the artwork, I can only recommend this game to anyone who's a builder. It's also fun to play, btw, but it's only a singleplayer game... *sigh*.

I don't believe this would be as crippling as it seems. First your looking at characters that are wandering into these places to begin with - Using Vives 1 as an example (Poor as it is since the level balance will be hugely different) Consider a group that would enter into castle Valinor - At the very least we'd expect upper teens more likely epics. Four to five characters. Wizard, Rogue, Cleric, Warrior. Basic party, and they run into a total party kill. ...
