Metagaming/OOC Guidelines Posted: 21 Nov 2003 08:03 PM |
These are the official Vives guidelines for Metagaming and OOC behavior. This guideline may be modified at any time at the discretion of the Vives staff.
Metagaming
Metagaming is simply taking actions IG that your character would normally not take due to information that was obtained OOC. Metagaming is not allowed in Vives.
Metagaming Includes, but is not strictly limited to:
* Coming into irc and asking for rez is metagaming.
* Changing your irc nick to someone|DEAD or similar is metagaming.
* Sending a player a tell asking for rez is metagaming. Players receiving such tells should ignore them.
* Asking for locations of stuff IG in irc is metagaming. RP that stuff in the game.
* "Muling" or transferring items from one character to another is metagaming.
* Selling an item to a merchant, then coming back in with another character immediately to buy it is metagaming. It's really bad form to sell something, log off, and log in immediately to buy it with another character. Wait a few days first.
* Powerlevelling, or the practice of a strong player assisting a weaker player by "half-killing" monsters, while not partied with that player, is metagaming.
* Repeating quests to get the prize item for resale or other uses is metagaming.
* Remaking a character may not be strictly meta, but it is bad form. It's strongly discouraged. When you make your character take the time, energy, and thought you would if this was a PnP campaign or something permanent, because it is. We as DM's do not make exceptions to ANY player, old or new, who wants to remake a character due to a flaw in spelling, or mistake in class choice or stats. If we did it for one, we'd have to do it for all, so the policy is to NOT endorse or aid in any remakes or switching of items in the least, even if the character has the same name/lifestyle.
* Arranging trades or the buying/selling of items outside of the game.
* Information in the forums designated as "Roleplay" are strictly in character, and intended to give you context as to how characters are roleplayed, or to keep you abreast of in-game events. They are, in effect, an extension of the game. You should not use this knowledge to your advantage unless you have In-Character knowledge of it.
Out of Character
Out of character is not allowed because it breaks the mood for the other players around you. This is not a complete list, but the rest is basically common sense.
Out of Character includes, but is not strictly limited to:
* Breaking character in public or party talk. Use tells if you must ooc. the occasional ((afk)) or ((brb)) or obvious emergencies are OK.
* Speaking while you are dead. Use tells if you wish to speak with somebody, but don't ask people for rez while you are dead.
* Describing items by game mechanicl terms such as +3 longsword, 1d6 fire damage, is pretty OOC. Find an IC way to describe the item.
* Using text emotes like lol, ':)' and such. |

Yet again, I am bumping this post as a reminder. Sending a tell asking for a raise is metagaming. Metagaming is not allowed.
People recieveing such tells should ignore them, people acting on such tells will recieve XP penalties, as well as the people sending them (on top of respawn penalties). This also includes, logging out with your dead character, then in with another to garner assistance. There are no magical birds that can fly anywhere, or dying telepathic messages. If you die somewhere alone, you can wait patiently for someone to stumble accross your body by chance only or respawn.
Ignorance is not an excuse, there is a reason this is in the Essential Information Forum. Please everyone take the time to read the pinned posts here at the very least |
