Maldovia's become a popular tourist location in recent times, so I thought I'd jot down a few notes.

Those Who Are Being Haunted By Vampires

Connavar - Maria (vampiress, daywalker)
Malakhi Aquistine - Avadielle (vampiress, daywalker)
Kan Brenner - Avadielle
Cain Angus - Avadielle's hounds
Marion Wyldfyre - Avadielle's hounds

List last edited 2 Jun 05 by Dianne

Preamble

Basically, we've chased quite a few people out of Maldovia in recent times. The first was a group that wanted to loot Castle Valinor. The other two were running around Maldovia solo at level 11-ish; I spotted them in the IG list and jumped in straight away to give them whatfor. Gasher was there for Malakhi. Kan had to be chased out by me on two separate occasions (after the second, I decided he needed a stalker).

The first haunting was something we came up with on the spot. It was such a good idea that we continued the tradition for all foolish adventurers (especially those who would venture there alone... grrr).

No one trespasses in Maldovia without lasting consequences! No one! Raaar!

Timeline

* Group of adventurers (Connavar, Drogar, Jubei) plot to loot Valinor Castle.
* At Syn's Bridge, group encounters Midoran priestess.
* Priestess babbles about darkness, then dies.
* Darkness comes. Group is chased away by Creepers.
* Roland and Amaryl arrive on the scene, but they also run from the Creepers.
* Maria starts to torment Conn.

* Maria continues to torment Conn.
* Caliber attempts to help.
* Blanche attempts to help.

* Malakhi ventures into Maldovia solo and is chased out.
* Avadielle stalks Malakhi all the way to the Central District of Maldovia.
* Avadielle continues to stalk Malakhi, never saying a word.

* Kan attempts to solo-slay everything in Maldovia and is chased out by a lone Creeper.
* Kan does it again, days later.
* Avadielle follows him out the second time.

* Vansane tells Blanche, Tagius, Alton and Connavar the story of Maria, his daughter, in the Ye Hole In Da Ground.
* Connavar is led away to a room by Maria, who feeds on him.
* Malakhi is directed to the Ye Hole In Da Ground by Avadielle.
* Vansane tasks Malakhi with getting him some widow's tears in exchange for the name of the vampiress that haunts him.

* Malakhi obtains widow's tears. Vansane gives him Avadielle's name. This is at McGillicutty's. Kan and Conn were also present.
* Malakhi begins searching for Avadielle in the Ka'azim texts.

* Drogar and Kan attempt the Death's Head Tomb, but run away scared before they get anywhere dangerous.
* Avadielle plays mind tricks on Kan.
* Kan and Drogar babble, giving Gukathul's undead time to track them down and catch up.
* Kan is killed by a Corpse Gatherer.
* Avadielle raises Kan, saying that he is significant to "us" somehow, then she vanishes. The price for the rescue is not negotiated, nor is it made apparent what it will cost him... yet.

* Melissa's Shadow reveals some information on Avadielle's motives regarding Malakhi to Malakhi

* Avadielle appears to Tagius and Nessa in Ye Hole In Da Ground and gives them a cryptic message - to tell Kan that he owes us his life

* Cain and Marion are chased out of Maldovia. Avadielle really can't be bothered testing them. She's decided to send hounds out to stalk and kill and/or feed on them (feel free to occasionally have some of these stalk them for fun). [Creatures > Custom > Monsters > Planar > Other > Shadow Mastiff]

* A Shadow (presumably Melissa's) leads Malakhi to a secluded spot, where he experiences a dream of the past: Avadielle arguing with her brother, Rickard, about the non-involvement of the celestials when Aristi is gripped by the plague

* Malakhi sends out a letter to the mage towers requesting help interpreting his visions
* Avadielle speaks to Malakhi for the first time, hinting that Melissa's celestial lineage will be used as a weapon against the righteous — “Angel blood and devil mind. What happens when you combine both?”

Maria

Gasher's writing this one up now.

Appearance: Maldovian Vampiress

* Maria is Vansane's daughter.
* She has a habit of calling Connavar her "pet"
* She has bitten Conn to feed on him, but not to turn him
* Maria seeks to make Vansane jealous (more on her motivations forthcoming)

Avadielle

I still have to write this one up properly. Malakhi is trying to find information on her.

Appearance: Maldovian Vampiress, wielding a whip, wearing Half-Celestial Full Plate, often flanked by two Shadow Mastiffs

* Avadielle is an old daywalker, probably of the third generation (if Syn's first vampires can be considered the first).
* She does not act overtly, and rarely speaks - preferring to test her victims bit by bit with illusions to see if they are worthy of being turned into daywalkers.

* Avadielle tends to chase foolish adventurers out of Maldovia, nothing more. If they show promise, she will begin to personally stalk them and test them with illusions.
* Unlike Maria, she is driven by a sense of duty: to keep fools out of Maldovia; and to recruit those who would make good servants. Her intention is to test, not to play. Her mind games all serve an analytical purpose.
* If the victims prove valuable, she may occasionally intervene to save their lives... though will exact a heavy price later. The price is usually something psychologically taxing, or some task that is morally dubious. It ought to be something that makes the Port Royale priests look positively altruistic.
* Fun fact: Melissa Lyle [PC under starryice account] is a distant descendant of Avadielle. I'll probably end up having Melissa's Shadow come up with most of the Avadielle information.

Valoria Deidrich

Appearance: Priestess of Midoran

* See Dark Night for a Priestess of Light
* Valoria is the Midoran Priestess that is mentioned right at the beginning of the timeline

Maria

Gasher's writing this one up now.

Appearance: Maldovian Vampiress, with Midoran priest robes

* Maria is Vansane's daughter.
* She has a habit of calling Connavar her "pet"
* She has bitten Conn to feed on him, but not to turn him
* Maria seeks to make Vansane jealous (more on her motivations forthcoming)

The one with the priestess robes is gonna be Valoria Dedriech. The priestess Connavar and them saw fall in Maldovia that day.

So far for appearance of Maria Ive just used stock vampiress. Tho I will look for something to make her a bit more unique looking. She has yet to be seen very much so shouldn't create too much confusion to give her unique clothing now.

Sir or Lady-

I have had a series of visions, both waking and sleeping, which I believe to hold meaning, though largely unintelligable to myself. An audience with one who is skilled in interpreting such things would be greatly appriciated.

*signed with flourish*

Malakhi Aquistine

Gasher, Vandle and I will take care of it.

I vote Naillamne! Yus! And I think Vansane should be involved, somehow. *Goes off to discuss*

Avadielle

* She dates back to the era when the plague gripped Aristi
* Son, Darius, was victim to the plague
* Brother, Rickard, was a celestial of some sort - with funky angel wings, yus (Appearance: Half-Celestial Warrior)
* She was either a former celestial being of some sort, or was on the verge of becoming one, but because she wanted to interfere and stop the plague, she got banished. The thread on demons/angels/etc is old and I might add some questions and ideas to it because of this. We have sooo much on fiends, but little on celestials. Other than the fact that planes don't exist, and that they are Good, and that Nu'men likes to keep naughty ones in his cookie jar, that is pretty much all I know of them.
* Her son was taken from her by Rickard, For Her Own Good. She stood some sort of trial, and got banished. Darius survived the plague and she knows it.
* She sided with Count Valinor, but we all know what happened to him. Avadielle's now a daywalker.
* Fast forward to the present day, and we find she's finally traced her descendants to Melissa Lyle. The Shadow that accompanies Melissa has been sent by Avadielle to toughen her up so that she can one day survive being turned into a daywalker and everyone can be one big happy family, awww. To that end, the Shadow's been selectively handing information over to Malakhi that may lead to this being achieved, though as far as Malakhi knows, all the Shadow's doing is helping him with his situation.
* Rickard doesn't know any of this yet, but he might find out through Kan or Tagius. I doubt he'll manifest himself physically; I imagine celestials are far more subtle than fiends, which is why they are rarely or never seen.

Blanche La Belle: Sit here mister Malakhi.
Mälakhi Aquistine: You sit. I shall stand.
Blanche La Belle: Gah! don't stand up like that!
Tagius Riverstorm: *looks to Blanche*

Mälakhi Aquistine: *brushes hand over plant*
The Dirge : "Sleep"

((Jumped in Rickard, Avadielle and two Shadow Mastiffs - all ghosted))
Half-Celestial Warrior: They're going to exile you, or worse. You know that, don't you?
Half-Celestial Warrior: *There's sadness in his voice*
Maldovian Vampiress: I've done nothing wrong, brother.
Half-Celestial Warrior: There are limits to what we can do. Your interference-
Maldovian Vampiress: Should I have let my son die?
Maldovian Vampiress: Where is he now? Where have you put him? *She demands*
Half-Celestial Warrior: You can't see him again, Avadielle. Not until after the trial. Maybe never if...
Maldovian Vampiress: I'll find him.
Maldovian Vampiress: You... you all think you're right all the time.
Maldovian Vampiress: We stand by and let that... that plague continue! We can DO something about it!
Maldovian Vampiress: We have the power.
Half-Celestial Warrior: But we don't have the right, sister.
Maldovian Vampiress: We'll see about that.
Maldovian Vampiress: I know someone. He said he'll lead us free, away!
Half-Celestial Warrior: What must be must be. We must let the plague continue. A thousand years from now, maybe more, you'll see why.
Maldovian Vampiress: A thousand years!
Maldovian Vampiress: I can't wait a thousand years. There are people dying -now-!
Half-Celestial Warrior: There are rules-
Maldovian Vampiress: Rules! *She sneers*
Maldovian Vampiress: They're DYING because of your RULES.
Maldovian Vampiress: How can you call yourselves celestials and permit this to happen?
Half-Celestial Warrior: Avadielle...
Maldovian Vampiress: No!
Maldovian Vampiress: No, don't start.
Maldovian Vampiress: Count Valinor has formed a plan to save us.
Maldovian Vampiress: You'll see. We'll escape this plague yet. We'll stop it.
Half-Celestial Warrior: *He shakes his head sadly*
The Dirge : *The dream fades*
((Jumped out the ghosts, and brought the Shadow back in))
Shadow: *Something reaches into your mind and seems to draw something out of you*
Shadow: *Shadow fingers dancing in your subconscious*
Shadow: *As if your mind is merely an instrument to play*
Shadow: *A string is plucked*
Shadow: *And you awaken*
Mälakhi Aquistine: *stirs awake*

Re: DMs: Maldovia Victims

I've mainly been posting in the Halloween 2005 thread, but I thought this one was worth putting here. I'll probably end up dedicating this thread to logs of interest.

Background: I don't know if you've seen Mirghul Forest Trail recently, but it's gotten very spookeh. By day it looks like Maldovia woods, all misty and creepy-like. By night, it's totally black except for a dim red light that illuminates the trail. The sounds have changed too, it's silent save for a soft wind by the day, and filled with bat/ghost/wolf noises by night.

So. That's the scene set. Without any further ado... ladies and gentlemen, the return of Coruva:

+++++

(Mirghul Forest Trail)

(Set the time to hour 20 so that it would JUST be fading to dusk as Coruva hit the middle of the trail, shifting from spooky white mist to black and red night. That's also when all the night sounds suddenly kick in all at once.)
Whisper : *As night descends, the sounds of the forest change*
Whisper : *There's more than just the wind whispering. More than just birds flitting.*
Coruva Lorehammer: *clutches his mace tighter, his eyes becoming more alert*
Whisper : *Somewhere to the west, there's a crash*
Whisper : *A lone voice cries out in panic, for someone, anyone, to help*
Coruva Lorehammer: *growls and turns to the west*
Whisper : *A wolf howl unlike any howl you've heard drowns out the voice. More crashing*
Coruva Lorehammer: Who's there? Speak yer name!
(Jumped to Mirghul - The Western Forest and spawned in the corpse of a dead female commoner, then spawned in a Nightmare Hound to lurk over the corpse)
Coruva Lorehammer: *glances about, uncertain* I said speak yer name er step forward!
Coruva Lorehammer: I 'ave no time fer game this night *he mutters more to himself*
Whisper : *Another crash now as someone charges blindly through the wood*
(Sound VFX, voice asking for help)
Coruva Lorehammer: *treads west, towards what hopefully is the answer to the commotion*

(Mirghul - The Western Forest)

Whisper : *There's a loud sound of something snapping, then silence. Then a crunching.*
Coruva Lorehammer: *crouches down next to the treeline*
(Possessed Nightmare Hound and walked forward over the corpse)
Nightmare Hound: *Nuzzles the corpse, red eyes glowing*
ightmare Hound: *Opens wide its jaws and begins to munch on the neck with incredibly strong jaws, bones crunching like paper*
(Depossessed as Coruva buffed up. He smacked the hound around a bit. Waited for the hound to do a psychic concussion thing before hitting Enter and sending the next line.)
Whisper : *A stream of nightmare images flood through your mind as it howls*
(Coruva kills the hound)
Whisper : *The corpse oozes and disintegrates into shadows and darkness*
Coruva Lorehammer: *staggers back from the corpse, trying to shove the images the wolf shot through his mind from his vision*
Whisper : *Blood! Blood everywhere in the Bloodwood, oozing from every tree like sap...*
Whisper : *The images fade*
Coruva Lorehammer: *regains his breath, and his self control..finally able to focus on the body at his feet*
Coruva Lorehammer: *shoulders his shield and places the mace at his belt, kneeling down next the womans corpse*
Whisper : *The head and neck a bloody mess. Scratches, bruises, and tears from scrambling through low-hanging branches.*
Coruva Lorehammer: *quietly* I should have moved faster, sister, an this may not have been yer fate. Here in the wilds. *he carefully grabs a handful of soft soil from the ground and dusts it over the corpse*
Coruva Lorehammer: [Dwarven] [Breg, it has been long since me prayers to ya, unless ya was with me while I dreamt]
Coruva Lorehammer: [Dwarven] [If it be yer will, show me that ya stan at me side still. An show compassion upon one that should not have fallen so far from her kin an loved ones]
Coruva Lorehammer: *kneels down in prayer*
Coruva Lorehammer: *splays his fingers wide and casts the remaining dirt over the fallen woman*
Whisper : *Something's wrong; very wrong.*
Coruva Lorehammer: *tread safe on yer path ta the other side, lass. Breg shall guide yer step*
Whisper : *There's nothing there. No soul. No life to retrieve.*
(Briefly did tentacle effect on corpse)
Coruva Lorehammer: *shakes his head sadly* Too far gone...
Whisper : *Curling out of the darkness comes a tendril of shadow*
Whisper : *Wrapping around the corpse, then sinking into the forest floor*
(All by itself, it started to rain.)
Coruva Lorehammer: *steps back, his eyes slowly losing their compassion and growing with awe and a hint of fear*
Whisper : *The images flash again: blood in the Bloodwood. Eyes in the darkness. And within a glassy mirror... tendrils of shadow, dancing.*
Coruva Lorehammer: *shakes his head from side to side, trying to free himself from the visions* Blood.......the bloodwood.....*shuts his eyes tightly and lets out a low growl*
(Cast darkness around him, leaving him in a little clearing of non-darkness)
Whisper : *A strange illusion overcomes you. The forest seems to grow darker, than vanish completely.*
Whisper : *There's only you, and the body, and the blood.*
Whisper : *But the world does not exist*
Coruva Lorehammer: *his mouth sticks to the roof of his mouth, unable to speak, only to shiver slightly in the darkness*
Whisper : *The illusion fades*
(The Darkness wore off as the clock hit hour 6 - I could not ask for better timing. I set the weather back to Clear and stopped the rain.)
Whisper : *Through the canopy, the first rays of sunlight start to peek through as dawn arrives*
Coruva Lorehammer: *whispers* I will return to set this right, lass. But I must find the reason fer this.
Coruva Lorehammer: *checks the ground for prints of either the wolf or the woman in the soil*
(At this point I was keeping half an eye on Coruva as I jumped to the other side of the world to bop some players who had been non-stop RPing since before I logged in)
(Back just in time to see that Coruva has spotted the gypsies)
Coruva Lorehammer: Aye....there near the fire. I do not come ta fight. Only ta speak.
Whisper : *They chatter in some unknown language*
(They attack and get whomped)
Coruva Lorehammer: *snarls* Lycans!
Coruva Lorehammer: *kicks over the pot and whatever it contains, spilling it into the fire*
(The other one runs forward and gets whomped)
Coruva Lorehammer: Back!
(Belatedly, I finish typing in response to the kicking of the pot)
Whisper : *Whatever it is, it smells terrible*
Coruva Lorehammer: *peers into the tent*
Whisper : *It smells of animal. A right mess, and nothing of interest.*
Coruva Lorehammer: Blood...he murmurs...blood in the bloodwood....
Coruva Lorehammer: I remember that place.....but it was long ago....
(He wanders around and finds another of the gypsies)
Coruva Lorehammer: *stares at the humanoid form to the south* I do not come ta fight! Lay down yer arms an speak, or ya will suffer the fate a yer comrades!
Mirghul gypsy: *Swivels his head and turns towards the sound, growling*
Mirghul gypsy: *Sniffs the air and spies the Dwarf, eyes narrowing*
Mirghul gypsy: *Growls in a guttural language, questioningly*
Coruva Lorehammer: *his stance remain defensive as he watches the man closely*
Mirghul gypsy: *With difficulty* Rrr... what Dwarrrf... want?
Coruva Lorehammer: I know yer kind. I've seen em before. What goes on ere? The darkness....the visions?
Mirghul gypsy: *Tenses* Rrr... you see darkness and... vish-zun... too?
Coruva Lorehammer: *his fingers furl and unfurl around his mace* Aye, cursed one, I see em...the darkness an the blood.
Mirghul gypsy: *Crouches in a dog-like manner*
Coruva Lorehammer: But only when the sun falls from the sky, it seems.
Mirghul gypsy: Rrr. *Nods in agreement*
Coruva Lorehammer: Has it always been so, since yer kind has taken this territory?
Mirghul gypsy: ~Shakes his head from side to side~
Mirghul gypsy: Rrr.... is something... something from outside.
Mirghul gypsy: *Points north* From far that way and... *points east* that way.
Mirghul gypsy: Is coldurrr now. And mist comes from sea, from currsed island.
Coruva Lorehammer: *keeps his eyes on the creature, not following his pointing, but nods in understanding*
Coruva Lorehammer: Maldovia?
Mirghul gypsy: *Pulls his lips back over his teeth in a snarl* Yesss...
Mirghul gypsy: They come. Rrr. Darrrk ones, they come.
Coruva Lorehammer: *shakes his head sadly* *quietly* Another unfinished vow that still haunts me....
Mirghul gypsy: *Tilts his head to the side like a dog that doesn't understand its master's command*
Coruva Lorehammer: Then the course is set....*he whispers*
Mirghul gypsy: ~Shifts uneasily~ Rrr. Darrrk things, they come. Prrey on all. Suck soul frrom body, leave nothing but husk.
Coruva Lorehammer: Cursed one...ya have been of aid ta me, an fer that I will spare yer life this day. But know this. If I see yer kind beyond this forest. I will not do so again.
Mirghul gypsy: *Snarls* Rrr, we not go out therrre. Too light.
Mirghul gypsy: ~Nods once, snarling again~ Darrk ones. Darrk ones must go.
Coruva Lorehammer: Tread carefully, cursed one. And perhaps salvation shall come ta ya in the end.
Mirghul gypsy: *Rises and slinks off*

(Brandibuck Vale)

(Waited for Coruva to appear from Swiftdale before having the guard speak)
Brandibuck Guard 1: So then ma says, we gotta git back ta Brandi quick, Poppo. And I says, roight ma!
Brandibuck Guard 1: So we runs and all these bats are all over!
Brandibuck Guard 1: And ma's all, AAAAAH! But not me, no.
Brandibuck Guard 2: *Snickers* Right.
Coruva Lorehammer: *listens intently* Bats ya say?
Brandibuck Guard 1: Yessir. Bats.
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Holds out hands about a shoulder width apart* Big 'uns.
Coruva Lorehammer: Me pardons fer eave droppin, good sir. But they came from the forests ta the south?
Brandibuck Guard 1: Well, don't roightly know if they came from there, sir, but tha's where they wuz.
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Pauses at the howl*
(Good accidental timing here again; dusk crept in. There are wolf howls in Brandibuck by night.)
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Darts a glance to the trees*
Coruva Lorehammer: An wolves....
Brandibuck Guard 3: There it is again
Brandibuck Guard 3: I tells ya, that's no normal wolfie
Brandibuck Guard 2: Yer jus' chicken
Coruva Lorehammer: No...it is not....
Brandibuck Guard 3: Everyone says there's big dogs everywhere out there
Coruva Lorehammer: The creature I fought was not normal......*he shivers at even the thought*.....it was something I ave never seen. An hope ta ne'ev see agan
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Looks around nervously*
Coruva Lorehammer: If ya could, lad. It has been som time since I walked these trails. There used ta be a bridge that led ta the island of Maldovia. Does it still stand?
Brandibuck Guard 1: Ya know, it's not usually this quiet. But it's gotten rilly quiet at night lately... *wrings hands*
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Nods* Yessir.
Brandibuck Guard 4: Group went there the other day, chasin' sheep
Coruva Lorehammer: Is there a path ta it still?
Brandibuck Guard 1: Yessir, through the east wood to the coast
Brandibuck Guard 4: Ol' man Bibbido sez there's goblins out there
Brandibuck Guard 4: And giant sheep
Brandibuck Guard 2: *Rolls eyes*
Coruva Lorehammer: The east wood? Do ya mean behin me *points to the south*
Brandibuck Guard 1: Yessir. East o' the trail.
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Looks around* Wouldn' go alone and in the dark, though.
Coruva Lorehammer: *nods once*
Brandibuck Guard 4: Strange things happenin'. Strange things. *Shines sword against tunic fabric*
Coruva Lorehammer: Time waits fer no man, er dwarf. An if I had companions, I would bring them...but they are gone now.... I let this sit fer too long an hoped it would fade.
Coruva Lorehammer: It has not....an that is partly me own fault
Brandibuck Guard 1: ~Looks up, listening intently~
Brandibuck Guard 3: ~Shifts from foot to foot, obviously unnerved by the silence and howls~
Coruva Lorehammer: I thank ya fer yer time, good guards. Keep yer families in their homes this eve. An if I do not come back on this trail. Let others know that Lorehammer had gone to Maldovia
Brandibuck Guard 1: *Nods nervously* Yessir. If you're sure...
(Off to Maldovia he goes)

+++++

That's pretty much the end of that session. Coruva went around exploring the Mirghul areas before heading off to Maldovia. Or rather, he tried. Gave up on smacking the door to Maldovia Coast (I've since reduced the door's HP) and went to Frobozz Isle, ran into the purple badgers, then headed home to Bregodim.

Whee! That was fun.

Starry-

I'm working thread fo Malakhis plotline now, for a weekend post, hopefully. It is going well, except for one thing. It seems that I am in a unique position playing (what I take to be) the villian of the plot. This puts me in an interesting relationship with the other PCs. What I expect to be the problem is this: Im going to need the assistance of other people for a trip to Maldovia. But... those that I take into my confidence are going to most likely want to stop me/kill the vampires there, or very soon thereafter. What options do I have in dealing with this? I was planning on doing a RP post similar to the two you mentioned for the trip in... so I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Do I have the option of telling people that this PC and that PC can come, but you, you and you cannot? How about deception? In a perfect world, Id like to round up all the powerful PCs I could, say that I wanted to clear Valinor Castle, and then lead them all into a trap there... inprisonment by the vampires for the duration or something, taking care of my needing to speak with Vansane, and leaving only lower level PCs to oppose the rest of the way. My only other option, is just handpicking a few that I think would be loyal, form some kind of adventuring party, then lay on the gold for service and secrecy. I dunno? Any DMly insight?

+++++

OOOH ebil! Ebil! Trapping them in the dungeons... I like.

I actually have a specific list of people already, and I'll be doing some behind-the-scenes poking and prodding and coordinating. Don't fuss too much about that at the moment, I think Malakhi knows which PCs he wants to ask, and the rest will fall in line. If there are some others whom you trust, sure, ask them to accompany you by all means.

For the moment, what I'd suggest is just stick with gathering intel first—I can advise you on the rest of your questions after this has happened, because things will start to fall into place. If you want to plot something eeebil and leave them in the dungeons that is doable. Just keep me up-to-date with the plotting of the ebil man.

Coruva has already started asking around, in fact, so you may want to have a peek at this thread and start tacking things onto there. This works quite well because Malakhi can be a bit less conspicuous, since he isn't the one who's started asking around. I'll definitely be using this thread to keep an eye on things and coordinate a few events here and there. There is this one NPC who has finally been added to the palette who I am itching for you all to meet, so get cracking!

Just a bit of advice though, if you're planning to be the villain, don't get caught. That's so cliché. :)

(The day after Benny's Drums Along The River event. And the third time Alton, silly wussy Halfling, decided to tackle Mirghul by night with me online. The first was after the event with Miramil, and dang, I scared myself despite no DM being online to make it worse. That place is Teh Spookeh now. The second time, he was off to Ferein and had to go through by night, despite me telling him—as one of the guards—that he should wait until morning. And now this. Heeheeheeheehee.)

(Mirghul Forest Trail)
(Night falls, and with it, the sounds of the forest change)
Alton Highhill: Eeeeh...
Arawen: that usually doesn't...
Alton Highhill: EeeeeH!
Alton Highhill: I tolds ya. Bats an' 'owls and dark stuff
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Something breathes on your neck. It has your scent now. Three times you've been here and now it knows you.*
Arawen: Hmmm... strange
Alton Highhill: *jumps* Ahh!
Arawen: how far in have you gone?
Alton Highhill: I jus' crossed da path
Whisper : *There's a long, ululating howl. Something moves through the trees.*
Arawen: Mhmm...
Alton Highhill: It's not all
Whisper : *Two red eyes glare out from the darkness*
Whisper : *Something pounces*
Alton Highhill: Eeeh. Dey're watchin' us
(Nightmare Hound jumped in, attacks Alton. Limboed it just as it got to Near Death.)
Arawen: can you lighten our path?
Alton Highhill: *shivers*
Alton Highhill: I dun' fink dey'll like light in 'ere
Alton Highhill: *points onwards*
Arawen: *smiles*
Whisper : *Voices gibber and whisper in the dark*
Alton Highhill: *gulps*
Whisper : *Ghosts. So many ghosts.*
(Ghost sounds are one of the night sounds on the Trail)
Whisper : *There's an echo of a death scream*
(One of the Pit Vipers slithers up to Alton while he's distracted and he whacks it)
Alton Highhill: Eeeh!
Whisper : *There's an echo of someone screaming for help*
Arawen: Hmm... that sounds bad
Whisper : *There's an echo of a broken sob*
Alton Highhill: I tolds ya
Alton Highhill: An' dese two were neckbitten
Whisper : *A thousand bat-eyes glare from the dark*
Arawen: have you any protection from this evil?
Alton Highhill: *shakes head*
Whisper : *The eyes glare out again*
Arawen: Hmm
(Arawen sees the victims Alton was talking about)
Whisper : *Blazing blood-red, fixed directly on Alton*
Alton Highhill: A-aye...
Alton Highhill: I fink dey know me now
Arawen: who?
(Rested the limboed hound and jumped it in again to attack Alton)
Alton Highhill: Dey!
Arawen: some dead folks there
(A brief battle, jumped the hound out as soon as it got off a psychic concussion blast attack)
Whisper : *Nightmare images stream through your minds*
Whisper : *Blood oozes from the twisted trees of Bloodwood like sap*
Arawen: *tries to focus*
Alton Highhill: *concentrates*
Whisper : *Tendrils of shadow curl out from the ground, replacing the grass*
Arawen: more dead folk ahead
Whisper : *Illusions meld with reality*
Alton Highhill: *rubs his eyes*
Arawen: maybe they are pushing for your home town?
Whisper : *The howl echoes through your minds again and again*
Alton Highhill: Everyone's scared in da vales *shudders*
(Cast Darkness around them)
Whisper : *The darkness seems to close in*
Whisper : *You're alone in your feeble circle of light*
Arawen: hmm... what now?
Alton Highhill: I dunno... *looks around*
Arawen: we have to run for some light
Alton Highhill: Eeh!
Alton Highhill: Aye
Arawen: follow... *takes his hands*

(Mirghul Foothills)
Alton Highhill: *exhales*
Whisper : *Another howl shatters the silence*
(I made changes to other places too — by night, Mirghul Foothills, Swiftdale and Brandibuck Vale have wolf howls)
Alton Highhill: It's like dat everywhere. Even in da vale
Arawen: maybe we should head for Brandibuck
Whisper : *And then another, close by*
(Jumped ahead to the transition leading to Swiftdale, rested the limboed hound and jumped it in)
Alton Highhill: An' der's lots o' guards
Arawen: *nods*
Alton Highhill: Poor fellas
(Jumped to Swiftdale and popped in four more. "Overheard" them battling the hound as I was doing that.)
Alton Highhill: Der's funny stuff in - Eeh!
Alton Highhill: *breathes quickly*
Arawen: there... he's put to sleep now

(Swiftdale)
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *You can't get the images out of your mind. It's like the jaws of a nightmare have held fast onto your imagination and refuse to let go.*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *The images flood your mind and refuse to be shaken free. As if a living nightmare clamped its illusory jaws onto your mind and won't let go.*
(They spy the prowling hounds. Two of the hounds attack... or so I presume, because when I got there, they had their fear auras up. Alton and Arawen retreat to the edge of Swiftdale, out of range of the hounds, by hiding or relying on GS.)
Alton Highhill: Eeh!
Arawen: *freezes*
Alton Highhill: Wot 'appened?
Arawen: Can't seem to shake it
Whisper : *Living nightmares in solid form prowl through the silent darkness*
Alton Highhill: Dey's everywhere
Arawen: I just need to sit down
Alton Highhill: Dun' we need to go back to Brandibuck...?
Arawen: my head hurts...
Arawen: can't...
Arawen: uhh... *passes out*
Alton Highhill: Eeeh!
Alton Highhill: You cant do dat!
Alton Highhill: *pokes*
(Methinks Miramil is a bad influence. All that eeeh-ing and poking.)
Alton Highhill: Wake up!
Arawen: *she doesn't move*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *In a dark dream you seem to fall and something grabs a hold of your soul and tears into it with teeth as sharp as guilt and regret*
Alton Highhill: *nudges*
Arawen: *wakes up with a scream*
Whisper : *A screech fills the air once more*
(Popped a blind effect on the two for a few seconds — WA says the first time I did that to Alton I scared the hell outta him. Looks like it still works, muhahahahaha.)
Alton Highhill: Eeeeee!
Whisper : *A thousand bats soar overhead to return to their dark origin, screaming*
Arawen: I know I shouldn't have...
Arawen: *looks around, but sees nothing*
Alton Highhill: Its da bats
Arawen: uhh... my head
(Dawn arrives. All by itself, it starts to rain. Wow, Mirghul reads my mind.)
Whisper : *There's no dawn this day. Only a cold rain that chills to the bone.*
Alton Highhill: We gotta get outta 'ere
Arawen: where what?
Alton Highhill: *grabs her hand and pulls her along*
Arawen: *shivers*
(They pass the stone face at the end of the road leading to Brandibuck Vale)
Whisper : *The face moves out of the corner of your eye*
Alton Highhill: Jus keep goin'
Whisper : *The rain rolls down the stone like tears*
Arawen: ahh.. guards.. and
Alton Highhill: Uh... see... I tolds ya I'll be back...
Arawen: they are alive *sighs of relief*
(I'd left a dead Brandibuck Guard on Mirghul Forest Trail)
Whisper : *A brisk breeze freezes the rain to your soaked clothes and skin*
Alton Highhill: *shivers*
Arawen: *shivers* we should find an inn?
Alton Highhill: A-aye
Alton Highhill: *bolts the gate*
(He learned that habit off Miramil too *nods*)
Whisper : *One of the guards looks on in bemused relief at your return*
Alton Highhill: Dis stuff is goin' on in Bloodwood too. Sumfin' is killin' da Ettins, an' it ain' us
Arawen: *nods slowly*

(Brandibuck - Ye Hole In Da Ground Inn)
Alton Highhill: An' Miramil tells me mistah Gasher saw lots o' traps in der
Arawen: Oh? what sort of traps?
Alton Highhill: Spikey traps dat if ya step on dem, dey dun' stop springin'
(From... weeks ago. We went looking for trouble and found it. Watching Gasher dance on traps and Fatima stressing out was fun.)
Arawen: Ah hm...
Arawen: I can handle those... *smiles, then sits by the fire*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *The fire burns even from this distance*
Alton Highhill: *sits*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *For a moment, as you stare at your arm and hand, it seems you're made of shadow*
Alton Highhill: Its strange traps, 'cos aftah ya step on dem, dey dun' go away. You step on 'em again an' dey spring again, like sumwun puts new ones
Arawen: *looks at arms and hand*
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *It starts as an uncomfortable tingle that becomes a searing pain. The fire burns. You stare at yourself and it seems that you're made of shadow.*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *And now they're normal again. The sensation subsides.*
Alton Highhill: Aah! Naruth an' Syn are workin' tugevah!
(LOL)
Arawen: *shrugs, then looks at hands again*
Arawen: what are you saying Alton?
Alton Highhill: *looks at himself, eyes wide*
Alton Highhill: Dey're tryin' ta burn me, I tells ya!
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Your arms are tendrils of shadow*
Arawen: *sighs* maybe...
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Swaying and dancing to some unknown tune*
Alton Highhill: *blinks and looks straight at his arms* An' turn me ugly!
Alton Highhill: *flings his arms*
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *You look at yourself and note that the rest of you is the same. A writhing mass of shadow.*
Arawen: *nods* my arms and hands had a strange shadows around them too
Alton Highhill: *looks at himself* Bluddy 'ell. Dey's playin' tricks on me. Da's gotta be it.
Arawen: seems gone now... but maybe it isn't... hmm
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Those teeth. Those illusory teeth remain stuck fast to your mind, clamped. The teeth of a nightmare.*
Alton Highhill: *freezes in place, staring at his arms*
Arawen: those hounds were cloaked with shadows
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *For one fear-filled panicked moment... you can't remember who you are*
Alton Highhill: Wot? Oh.... Aye..
Alton Highhill: *blinks rapidly*
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *For one moment it seems to you that you have always been as you are now, a writhing hungering shadow*
Arawen: Hmm... must be the presence of those hounds .... but it may be nothing
Arawen: to worry about
Alton Highhill: *looks at Arawen oddly*
Alton Highhill: D-dey's in Bloodwood too
Alton Highhill: *looks at himself again*
Alton Highhill: Strange...
Arawen: *nods* I believe you... but there's not much we can do without higher council
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Reality shifts, merging with a waking nightmare. You see Arawen as Alton sees Arawen. And then you see Arawen as a pulsing warm thing, something to be devoured and destroyed.*
Alton Highhill: *looks at Arawen half-blankly*
Alton Highhill: *shakes his head rapidly*
Arawen: the Midorans should be interested in this, but as usual... I hardly think they would do anything
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *A terrible hunger fills you. Nothing else exists. Only the hunger and the need to devour.*
Alton Highhill: *stares at Arawen blankly now*
Arawen: *looks at arms*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *You see straight through them now, as if they aren't there. When you look at Alton you see a writhing mass of shadow.*
Alton Highhill: *looks at his arms a moment, then at Arawen again*
Alton Highhill: *steps forward and pokes her with his arm*
Arawen: Hmm.. did you cast invisibility on me just now?
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *The feeling passes with a suddeness that catches you off-guard*
Whisper : [Tell - to Arawen] *The illusion fades*
Alton Highhill: *jumps and back off*
Alton Highhill: Uh... huh?
Arawen: *looks at Alton*
Alton Highhill: *confuzzled* Wot?
Arawen: I couldn't see my arms for a while... now I can... I must rest... I think *speaks weakly*
Alton Highhill: Aye...
Alton Highhill: *blinks, looking quite lost*
Arawen: *walks up to him*
Alton Highhill: *blinks and looks up*
Arawen: *shakes him*
Arawen: are you alright? you look a bit hurt...
Whisper : [Tell - to Alton] *Someone breathes ice on your neck and then steps away*
Alton Highhill: E-e-eh... I jus' 'ad a funny feelin' *shivers*
Arawen: Ah... funny feeling as in... a dagger in your back?
Alton Highhill: *searches around, looking for someone that isnt there*
Alton Highhill: Eh... I kinda felt like I wan'ed to stick a dagger in /yer/ back for a momen'
Arawen: *blinks*
Arawen: Hmm... *tightens grip in sword in sheathe*
Alton Highhill: I fink sumone's watchin' us
Whisper : *The music boxes creak to life*
(Popped a music effect on the music boxes)
Arawen: huh? where?
Alton Highhill: I dunno
Whisper : *A nostalgic tune tinkles and dies away*
Arawen: I will take a rest now then...
Alton Highhill: *takes a deep breath* A-aye...
Arawen: *wanders off
Alton Highhill: I fink I will too

Okay, will try to run the murder IG or, failing that, post about the murder in the B&N thread. Will also sort out grabbing the gold he gave the gypsies. *Goes back to gaping in stunned and awed silence at this man’s sheer creative eeeebilness*

The robed man walked the mists of Mirghul much as he had countless nights before. Tonight, however, he strode with purpose. Swiftly, now, and as quietly as he could, he made his way south, and tonight, cut right from the path into the Western Forest.

He smiled to himself as he sighted his quarry. He would enjoy this thoroughly.

The group of lycan gypsies gathered close to 'round their fire, huddling from the night blanketing the forest. Agitated, he thought. He tried to approach as close as he could in silence, but they made him at about 50 paces. The largest dropped his bowl and let out a pealing howl.

The large gypsy took his lupine form and charged. The robed man stood his ground- perfectly still until the final second.

Then, with and extraordinary intake of breath, the man mustered all of the anger, all of the bloodlust that he could and let out the most deafening roar he could manage, throwing his greatsword to the side. He grappled with the gypsy and pinned him in short order.

Through the anger, he heard himself laugh. Now... what we all came to see, he thought to himself. He drew in yet another breath, and this time breathed a great jet of fire.

The gypsy screamed like a banshee as he was burned alive.

The strange man then stood, his eyes burning crimson, lending a deep shade of red to the mist around him. He approached the remainder of the gypsy caravan, slow and stately.

"I am your chieftan now, no futher harm shall come to you." He tossed a large bag of coin onto the ground. A small fortune for a band of gypsies.

"You would do well to have me as a friend in such as time as this." He glanced back at the smouldering body for effect.

He elaborated. "I need only one thing that you can provide to me. Murder."

He smiled. "You" he looked to them collectively, must kill a family of halflings from Brandibuck. You must not be seen and their bodies must be left in public. If the result is acceptable to me, you shall have an equal measure when you are done. If it is especially pleasing to me... you shall have four times the share."

Then he grimaced, baring his teeth: "If you cannot, I shall return and kill each one of you myself."

He paused one second longer, clasped something in the folds of his robe and dissapeared, invisible.

One minute longer... "I shall be watching. Waiting. Do not dissapoint me."

He then walked away, hopeful that closing the gate would become something less of an option.

Stillness. The midnight fog sits heavy in Mighul tonight.

Stillness. Silence.

Suddenly a bird bursts into flight from the canopy above and climbs into the night sky against the backdrop of the hazy moon.

----------------------------

Miles away nerves wear thin. A fist slams into a table, sending little splinters flying. Malakhi never was any good with patience. Or any of the other virtues, for that matter.

He paces his humble room by the light of a single candle. He had been called to do something... ages ago, it seems... but what? He saw the gathering darkness over Maldovia. He watched it with increasing anxiety- not of fear but of expectancy. The time seems near. And amidst this, his thoughts turn again and again to one thought.

Blood of his blood. In Maldovia.

-------------------------

One had helped him. He had looked into Vansane's dead eyes once before and seen... what? Amusement, perhaps. He had been much different then. Hardly more than a child. He had made some sort of impression, nevertheless.

One had helped him. Perhaps he would again.

-------------------------

A bird is suddenly perched at his open window. A letter is bound to his leg and he is again sent aloft. Over the water, to Maldovia.

Now add a few words why you wanted this one opened Ficcy.

Purpose in life: finding better ways of allowing players to kill themselves. Repeatedly.

This was the first major plot I ran, and it happened completely by accident. This shows how these things typically grow organically and snowball beyond all control. It started as a one-off event chasing players who had gone to Maldovia without a plan. It ended up as a server-wide event that ran several months long, ending in the 2005 Halloween event (Blood and Nightmares) and adding some new permanent lore and content (maps, characters) to the world.

You can see how many things needed to be juggled here with the Tells in-game and the PMs on the forums. There are some really cool stories submitted to us by players via PM. As much as we rewarded players with lore and world-affecting stories, they also rewarded us with stories that we sometimes couldn't share, so now you get to see some of them. Sheikh did a terrific job here of gleefully taking this opportunity to develop his character into a wicked Naruthian who made us all proud.

Loved this storyline Ficcy. I just reread all of the player stories that are linked in that post and it just reminds me of the caliber of roleplayers and storytellers we had here.

Yeah this was a great example of a small , meaningless spark being eagerly fanned by several people into a nice little bonfire.
