You had to pick a side back then. It was either that or face the
consequences. The Night Masks had returned in full force. They were
taking
back what they thought was rightfully theirs. The Black Hand was doing
everything possible to maintain their grip on the Port. This was the
time
of the Shadow War. Bodies filled the sewers of the Port. So much so
it was
rumored that one could walk around down there and not even get your
boots
wet with whatever putrid liquid was down there. When the dust cleared
the
Hand was left standing, not without some severe scars. It was time to
deal
with those that had betrayed them. One by one people and business
owners
began disappearing. The citizens of the Port ignored it. They knew
why.
Better them then me was the mantra of many during this time.

Blythe new his time was coming. He may have been a two bit hustler
but he
had made his choice. He and his small band of hustlers had sided with
the
Masks. A poor decision. Now he was all that remained of his little
click.
It was amazing what thoughts go through your mind when you are a marked
man.
Sleep is something that you learn to live without. Blythe was a
wreck.
He was also an outcast. Everywhere he turned all he saw were people’s
backsides walking away from him. He couldn’t remember the last
conversation
he had. Even Bald Rick chose not to discuss his precious turnip with
him.
Blythe was non existent. He was alone. He thought about ending his
own
life but even he knew that was not going to happen. He didn’t have it
in
him to do it. He wasn’t that lucky.

As he made his way down Scrap Alley he rushed by the P&J Tour Shop.
There
were no lights on within. Just darkness. He had heard rumors that
Mister
Jessup was not seen for some time. That was good news to Blythe. That
meant he was preoccupied. He hustled down the alley passed the Guyver
Shop.
He muttered to himself about how unlucky he was and that how he wised
just
once his luck would change.

Blythe was about to get his wish. It was going to change. It came
in the
form of a chubby dwarf. Blythe nearly had a heart attack when he saw
him.

“Oi ther Blythe. Thinks its time fer us ta talk mate.” the rotund
fellow
said while nibbling on a what seemed to be a large muffin.

Some say you make your own luck. Sometimes you make the wrong kind.

~~*huff*puff*thump*thump*huff*

He could hear his own heart beating louder and louder as he ran as fast as his legs could take him.

~~ “ Ya knaw yer on tha list Blythe. Ya knaw yer time is comin’. Ya didna think we fergot did ya?” The dwarf asked while his mouth was full of muffin bits.

Blythe’s eyes had a far off gaze in them as he followed the dwarf to the Pearl. As they sat down he a feeling of nausea came over him. He just wanted this to be over with.

“So ‘ere’s tha deal Blythe. We has decided ta gives ya anotha chance ta make amends we has. It ain gonna be easy, but is betta than tha otha option if’n ya falla me lad.”

He never thought he could run so fast. Everywhere he looked there were the horrors of the undead staring at him. Yet they did not touch him.

~~“All ya has ta do mate is take this letta ta Maldovia. Ther’s gonna be this deada fella ther. Just gives im tha letta an off ya go. Yer debt be paid back ta us an all is forgiven with wah ya has don.”

The tomb. He needed to find the tomb. There he would find the map to guide him to the abode of the one they call Lex. It is there that the portal resided to take him to safety and freedom.

~~”So. Thas tha offa mate. Does we has a deal?”

There it was. In front of him. He was told that the trap on the entrance to the tomb would be removed. He swallowed as he slowly reached his hand out to open the rust door. He closed his eyes. Turned the knob. “Click!” Nothing. The door opened. He let out a breath of relief .

~~”Yes. Tell Mister Jessup ill do it. I just want a chance to redeem myself. I mean he has to understand I had no choice. We were forced to join them”

The corridor to the tomb was pitch black. He felt around for the torch that was supposed to be left there for him.. With his left hand he gripped it. He quickly lit it, thinking there would be one of those dreadful ghouls there staring at him waiting to rip his face off. Instead all he saw was the massive coffin up ahead.

~~”Take it easy Blythe. Ya danna has ta explain ta me. Now danna mess this up. Ya can come by tha shop tomarra ta pick up tha note.

He pushed as hard as he could to move the cover to the coffin off. It slowly slid. Inch by inch. Blythe pushed and pushed. With one final grunt the top fell off. He quickly reached in to grab the parchment that had the map written on it. He felt its rouch edges on his hand and lifted it up to the torch. His eyes fell black. His face was a look of absolute horror. The parchment fell top the ground like a feather.

~”Ya are one lucky bastard Blythe.” The dwarf chuckled and shook his head as Blythe walked out of the Pearl with a new sense of life.

As the parchment landed Blythe looked up and began sobbing. The red eyes were coming for him. The scent of death was all over them. They were literally shoving each other out of the way to get to him. His flesh was like a peel to an orange being ripped off. His limbs were torn off like small tree branches. His death was torment. His last thoughts were of the note that was in the coffin.

It read…

“Reserved for the luckiest bastard in Vives.”

((OOC standard disclaimer... and all that crap.. you know the drill))

*letter delivered to Jessup*

Mr J.

* 'an associate' was written first, and then crossed out. Then 'a friend' was written, and also crossed out, followed by a few ink spots from where the quill must have been held over the page for a while. the letter begins just below that*

I'm sure you know at least some of the history that Claudia and I have, that we were both in the business together at one point, and that through that experience we grew to be like sisters.

*another couple of ink spots*

Despite her beliefs that all people deserve to be treated with respect (a belief which I think I was able to cause her to doubt after asking her whether she thought Vidus Kahin deserved the same respect she gives to those she cares about... or even those she feels are deserving of it) and her tendency to follow in the ways of people like the Aristi... defending truth and goodness.. and all that utter pap.
Despite these things, I still wish for no harm to come to her.
As I said, she was like a sister to me for many years, and if not for the Hand, would be the closest thing to family that I've ever had.

She expressed to me her concerns over this Dethsades issue. believing you to be in over your head this time... but that she is concerned foremost with Eliana’s safety. She had also commented that she could have put a stop to your plans already if she had wanted to.
I can only assume that the reason she didn't, is because she lacks the spine to sacrifice others, or cause them to come to harm (even ones she doesn't really care for) to get what she wants.

In convincing her that this business is unavoidable, I suggested that perhaps she should speak with you directly.
The way I see it, you should talk with her.. if for no other reason than you could feel out what she knows about the whole situation (and why she feels she could have put a stop to your plans)
But I imagine she may actually have some bargaining chips to add to the pot, or at least know what cards the Aristi might be holding.
Plus, I was unable to make much headway with her on this, probably because of the emotional attachment she has for me.

For now, she at least respects you... and I believe I have her convinced that the people who get the bad end of the deal from the Hand, usually deserve it.. otherwise, what we do, is merely business.. and like any business, if we weren't here to handle it.. someone else would just come along and take over. and more likely than not, she would like that situation even less.

Let me know if/when you would have time to meet with her, and I’ll let her know.

"Tell me Mister Terrance. How are things up top? I do miss it sometimes." the dark figure hissed.

"Things progress at a steady rate Mister Mortifer. The training of the true diciple has started. He is young. However he does show promise. There is a hitch. He is a Fey. One of Aros." Terrance grinned slightly.

The shadowy figure seemed to jump with glee at that news. He looked back down upon the rack and examined the bug eyed skulk that lay beneath him. Gag in his mouth, sprawled out, as helpless as a newborn.

"What of the dead package situation?" I truly wish to hear of that." He said as he worked on the fresh wounds of his captive.

"That is a most interesting situation. The paladins apparently tried to retrieve it. They failed from my understanding. Our spies have reported that they were unable to locate the dead package. Which means the the plan is still in motion. There are still hurdles of course. Maldovia does not give things to freely. Of that im sure you know." Terrance quipped as he watched a master at work.

"Oh heavens yes Mister Terrance. Lady Nakita is without a doubt a most shrewd businesswoman. Nevertheless she is one who holds true to her word." he said confidently.

Terrance rolled forward and back as if he were nodding.

"Tell me Mister Mortifer, who is this young chap you are working on?"

"Oh this?" Mortifer chuckled.

"This helpless youth in front of you is a squire to a group of paladins that thought slaying a few demons would do some good. Sadly however they ran into some of the Lord's newer pets. We really must thank those mages that come down here. They should get all the credit." He said as he finished up on his last wound.

"He is all that is left of the noble crusade. You are in for such a treat young man!" Mortifer said as he pointed his long skinny finger at the terrified squire.

Terrance pursed his lips a bit. He knew what that meant. He looked down at the squire as Mortifer went on.

"Aboddan awaits.......and so does the Sugar Man." Mortifer chuckled with glee.

Haz he zpokenz?

“He hasn’t spoken in years Mister Jessup. I’ve told you that before”.

The voice was like a whisper in his ears, going from one to the other and back and forth like it was circling him.

Jessup stared into the cell.

“He is…..most interesting Mister Jessup. Not like most that are here. He has lasted longer than any of the others that were brought in at the same time as him. That group included a very powerful cleric and a demi-god.”

The voice had coldness in it that even made the massive orc flare a nostril.

“He iz nah like tha moz’.” Jessup snorted.

He continued to stare into the cell as if he were waiting. Waiting for something. Anything.

“Hate Mister Jessup. He is full of hate. It is endless in him. Hate for those he knew. Hate for himself.” .

Tingles of ecstasy filled those words as they were spoken.

The orc did not turn around but merely let out a low growl and raised his hand as if beckoning the voice to stop speaking.

The sound of laughter filled the endless burnt brick hall.

“Please Mister Jessup he made the deal. He must live up to his end of the bargain. It is th-“.

“Mizta Jezzup iz awarez a tha dealz. Ya nah haz ta ezplain it ta me.” Jessup said cutting the voice off.

“Temper Mister Jessup. No need to get angry! I just like......reminding you” .

Sarcasm. It was a dagger to the the black soul of the orc.

With that he shut his eyes. Turned to face the thing that had been addressing him.

“Doz nah puzh yer luckz. Ya may rule ‘erez, but makez nah miztake it endz onze outizide thoze gatez.” Jessup said.

The voice became a loud whisper.

“Is that a threat Mister Jessup?”.

It was begging.

The orc glanced over his shoulder once again giving a long look at the cell. He then turned back to his host. He fixed the cuffs on his suit and smiled a bit.

“I zhall zee ya zoon.” He said as he walked down the dark hallway. All the while cries of agony and despair were falling on his deaf ears.

“I look forward to it Mister Jessup. I do enjoy your visits. It has a wonderful affect on my children!”

The voice echoed down the hall as the orc walked on.

As if it were following him.

It was unusual for her not to be in a jovial mood, but she wasn't in one now. And when Esmerelda wasn't happy, Jessup was doubly unhappy.

Right now the object of his wrath was Calbert.

"S'right... a Paladin... named Og..." He was shaking so much in his seat that the chair quaked.

A low growl emanated from the Half-Orc's throat. "Who da gurlz wid himz?" he demanded.

"N-n-nuhh..." He stammered incoherently.

"Darrrrling, I didn't get a name. He just called her 'little girl'," the skull said grimly. "I have a feeling she wasn't there willingly. Even nearly got her head chopped off trying to stop him."

"Y... y... yuh..." Calbert nodded rapidly in agreement.

"Ztilettoz," Jessup rumbled. "Coulda be her workz."

"He said he was a friend of Willom, darrrrrling," Esmerelda pointed out.

Jessup snorted. "Zhe coulda uzed dat and lured himz here. Mizta Jessupz will findz out."

He narrowed his glowing red eyes at Calbert, who went an impossible shade of white.

"It's all right, darrrrling. Calbert and I are going to have a nice chat afterwards. Aren't we Calbert?" Esmeralda cooed.

She clacked her jaws with a loud snap that sounded like a guillotine falling.

"Zhall Mizta Jessupz call da Healerz?"

"Oh... bring two, my dear. Just in case."

Dear Mr. Jessup.

Having only met you twice i am somewhat reticent about asking you for help in a delicate matter which can have no benifit to yourself, but I have been informed by friends that if a person requires a speedy result to an issues of urgency then you are commonly aknowleged as being the most resourceful gentleman in the port and the man to see.
If we could arrange a quick meeting i would be grateful - for the boon I ask is not for myself but for 'Bel'. a friend who has need of some assistance in seeking out her lost kin folks.

thank you.

yours sincerely

Twisted red eyes.

He sees the truth.

The truth that most don’t want to accept.

All of them his children.

The whore.

Hair unwashed. Face smattered with markings of powder to cover scars and bruises. Eyes hallow. Much like her heart. Her walk hides the agony she has endured throughout her life. Parts of her soul leave with every punter that visits her. So much to give. So little in return. It is that little bit that has made her what she is today. Only the blind see a whore.

The thief.

No honor among them? With one hand he shakes yours. With the other he takes your coin purse. Empty pockets bring nothing. Full ones carry more than gold to some. Each theft a new life begins. Someone else’s ends. They steal so much more than gold to the wise.

The assassin.

A painter. An artist in the truest sense. To the simpleton he is nothing more than a murderer. To the trained eye he is a godsend. A blade or a drop of poison. So many ways to die. A palette of ways! Morals hold no bounds to them. Morals are for the weak. A masterpiece.

The spy.

All eyes all ears. The betrayer of words and actions. Part smile and part scowl. Careful what you say. She has toppled empires. She has killed king and queen alike. In the right hands she is the deadliest of weapons. A double edged sword.

The orphan.

Potential. The future of us all. All they want is a family. He will give it to them. Undying love.

These are all his children.

He is thier father.

Woe to you who come between them and him.

You think hell is underneath you?

Fools, you are already in it.

Count your blessings is quite a common saying, but the only truly blessed are the dead, for they are ignorant of what is going on presently. The only thing I’m counting right now are the coins and cards in my hands.

Levidius, once Captain of the Northern Midoran Survey team, would have hardly believed what his future held for him until the day when they managed to push past the newly opened passes in the Divider Chain. On that day, all things changed. The dead spelt their slumber and the living cursed with continued existence locked up with the knowledge of what had befallen their brothers in arms.

Yet injury is not enough. To finally return home to Midor, to report his findings, to discover that the survey teams had been called back and that no rescue would be attempted. Perhaps it was for the best. No one should ever experience those horrors.

Yet, here he was in Port penniless and friendless. His efforts to have the clergy reconsider their stance had failed and so he had set out on his own to the only place he thought he could hire the help needed to mount another expedition. That was six months ago. Six months before despair and drink set in.

"Oi! It's yer bet, Midoran! Time to take a dump or get off the crapper eh?"

Levidius counted his few remaining coins. Already he was in debt with some thug holding his markers. This time would be different though. With a gesture he threw out a map onto the table.

"It's a treasure map. A map to a treasure beyond belief." he told the sharks sitting with him at the table.

"Bah! Is that all ye got? A rank piece of paper? That's it boys, this game's over". The halfling thug reached for the pot and started to sweep in the coins

"In Midoran's name, I swear to you it is true. I saw it with my own eyes.” It was a truth, maybe half a truth. But in the end, what did it matter?

"Midoran's name eh?" The thug looked him over. "I'd figured ya for an easy mark, Midorans usually are but yer word is usually good. Tell ya what. Ya has donated generously to my winnin's this eve. I'll give ya un hunnred gold and that is all ye'll get from me. Take it or leave it."

The sight of the coins settled it for him. This time for sure.

...

The halfling wasn’t known for his generosity and he knew something was worth a pretty penny when he saw it.

"It's a pretty map fer sure. Maybe I kin sell it to those mages in Ka'azim. Or maybe Mr Jessup will give me something fer it. He sure does love his Midorans.” With a chuckle, he folded the map underneath his tunic and took off in the direction of PAJWT.

It was a soft raspy giggle. Jessup didn't even open his eyes.
He knew that laugh. It was a laugh that hid eternal torment and pain behind it.
The orc just kept his eyes shut and his head cocked back against the wall.

"Silly ugly orc!" the voice said.

Jessup flared his nostrils and let out a snort.

"How come you don't visit your friend silly? He misses you he does. I can see it in his eyes.
Poor little hin. So angry. So full of hate. We love him we do." she chirped happily.

Jessup opened one eye. Ruby red. A gaze that would make most stomachs churn. Not this one.
He knew there was nothing that could be done or said to this one that would cause any form of discomfort or
harm that had not been done to her one hundred fold. Pain was a welcome friend to her. Hate was a sunny day to her.
Fear was a candy which she devoured. Hope? Well hope was what she looked for.
The land of Vives offered all of that.

"Wah doz ya want child?" Jessup grunted.

"Silly ugly orc...that's not nice! No sir, no sir, no sir. Im no child....you know that!" she beamed.

The orc glared at her with the one eye. Taking her contorted faces in one by one.

"Ive just come to tell you. Tell you something special I am! A secret! A secret!
I think you'll be really happy to hear! Yes sir, yes sir, yes sir!" She exclaimed.

Her smile ripped open the fresh scabs on the corners of her mouth.
Her teeth seemed to grow and protrude out.

"An wah iz it ya wan ta tell me child? Hmmm?" Jessup inquired.

She glide up to Jessup without moving a leg. Her breath was that of ice. Her tongue licked upward onto the
orcs cheek. Jessup opened up his other eye and stared directly into hers. He saw him in there. Looking back.
A fiendish grin ontop of a faceless head. It tilted its head to the side as if trying to see more clearly.

"Do you see....do you, do you, do you?" she gurgled.

Her tongue whipped up and down the orcs cheek then back into her mouth.

Jessup growled.

She glided backward and spun around. Her leg extended out like a ballerina as she dipped down and up.
She looked out toward the sea. Her back to the orc who merely scowled.
Her head spun around letting a loud crackle out.
She looked right at Jessup.

Fathers coming! she gurgled in ecstasy.

"The list seems to be growing daily Mister Jessup. Now we cannot be sure that all of these names on that list have made deals, better safe than sorry though. The mages will prove more difficult as always, however ive arranged certain help that will make them as helpless as a newborn child."Mortifer smiled

Jessup looked over the list. So many names. Names he knew.

Balthor
Alis
Salt
Ophelia
Shard
Emma

Those were just some of the more notable ones. There were many more.

"When do we get started boss?" Cora stepped out from the shadows of the room.

"Zalt ztill haz zom' time leftz. We will abide by our dealz." Jessup snorted.

"You sure we can afford to wait? I mean the longer he takes the more we add to it. Only a matter of time before he really starts hitting home." Cora added.

"We waitz. Make zure all preperationz are zet zo tha' we can act quickly. Be ready ta ztart with tha magez when ya git tha word." Jessup said.

Cora noded her head in agreement and turned her attention to the door where little Tomi Swiftfoot was standing.

Jessup waved him into the room. He scurried in eagerly.

"I gots a message fer ya Mista Jessup. Tha mage Salt wants a meetin'. Wants ta talk thin's ova he does."

Cora smiled. Jessup knew exactly what she was thinking. Tomi looked on waiting for a response.

"Tellz tha mage I will meet 'im. I will zend wordz wher tha meetin zhall take plaze." the orc replied.

Tomi nodded and ran off as fast as he could.

"So.....who you want with you?"Cora asked smile still on her face.

Jessup stared into the glowing fire. His silence was answer enough.

"We lost half those that were supposed to carry out the contracts. We have our personal force still in tact however with so many on the list it will take some time. I think we should put out fresh contracts and recruit." Cora said.

" 'O long will tha takez?" Jessup asked.

"Most likely about four to five days. It'll take some time to sort out who gets who." She added.

"Very wellz. Ya haz one week ta zet thinz in orda. I muz tend ta tha zity az bez az I can. Zend wordz ta Zalt an tha othaz tha they haz zeven more dayz ta zettle mata'z with tha Zugah Man." Jessup grunted.

"Will do boss." Cora Smirked.

"Oh, we have the mage slayers like you requested. How many do you want sent out when the time comes?" She asked.

"Keep themz hidden fer nowz. I zhall wan two on each mage. I zhall 'andle one of tha magez perzonally." Jessup frowned.

*THE HIDDEN*

Slide's whisper was barely heard by the orc. It did annoy him. Howver that was one of the reasons why Slide was considered the best. He was trained by Molo. Legend had it Molo could stuff a great wyrm in your pack without you knowing. Suffice it to say Slide wasn't to far off.

"This is all we have."

The gnome pulled out the blank parchment and handed it over. Jessup examined it and frowned.

Fat Sam strained his neck from the table to look over and see what was on it, but he dared not stray from his snack of roast turkey, fresh mashed yams with honey butter and chocolate cake.

"They had to kill her to get it. They were instructed to gather information regarding it but felt that it would not be possible. Might not have been the most helpful move but i'd gather it was the wisest."

Slide stayed right behind Jessup as he spoke. He avoided eye contact whenever possible. The orc rolled up the blank parchment and set it on his lap.

"Zend wordz to our operativez. I wan' diz taken ta Ozwin. Zee wah e' needz ta dezipher diz. Makez zure tha e' gitz it."

Jessup handed the parchment to the tiny gnome. Slide gave a quick nod and bowed. He stepped back still eyeing the back of the orcs head as he faded away. It was on that parchment somewhere. The tricky part was finding it without destroying it. That would be up to Oswin.

Hopefully the crew Slide was putting together for this job could survive the trip to the dark mage.

The pipes in the basement dripped with steam. I wasnt so much dark as it was murky. The combonation of smoke and lack of light made her eyes strain. It didnt matter. She was tied to the chair. She didnt say a word. She wouldnt. Not her. She had been through too much in her lifetime, what could these folk do to her that hadnt been done before. She was hardened. That was the life for most Kraken sailors. Hers was no different.

Muffins. The sent of baked muffins caught her nose. She looked around and tilted her head. She swore she could hear someone eating. Whoever they were they sure as hell werent trying to hide it.

Sweat started to build on her forehead. It was starting to get warm. Then a whisper to her ear from behind.

"Im going to ask you once again. What did they say." the voice said.

She just kept her mouth shut. Screw them.

"This is gittin' borin' Slide. She ain' gonna talk. I say we jus track down them two tha' was on tha ferry. Thas are bes' bet." said a voice from a corner of the room.

A soft sigh was heard from behind. Her resolve was proving too much for her captors. The creaking of the basement door was heard. She could feel the presance that was behind her draw back. The sounds of eating could no longer be heard.

"THUMP, THUMP,THUMP"

Footsteps. Not human ones that was for sure. Much heavier. The sweat on her brow streamed down her cheek. She couldnt help but hold her breath as she listened to what was coming down the basement stairs. It seemed to take forever. Step after step creaked under the weight of whatever was coming.

It was two red glowing ruby eyes that could be seen through the steam. It was as if the smoke itself got out of the way. They were fixated on her.

The voice from the corner spoke up again.

"She ain' talkin' sir. Nah a peep."

She swallowed. Her eyes staring into the red pools of menace before her. Her hands started trembling as the massive figure came closer. His hand grabbed the side of her head gripping her hair tightly. It dragged to the beads of sweat that had fallen to her cheek. With one sharp fingernail he collected the sweat pressing just hard enough to leave a mark. She winced in discomfort.

The eyes came closer. Face to face. She could not help but stare. Fear had filled her heart. Something that she had not felt in many years. He spoke.

"I thinkz we iz being too accomodatin' to our guezt."

His hand went around her throat and it slowly squeezed as she struggled to get out of his grip. It was like a hand around bottle. It became more and more tight.

"I admirez yer tanazity. Oweva' I am in a bit ofz a ruzh fer knowin' a thiz matta. Zo nowz my leetle piratez. Ya willz tell me everytingz. Wont yaz?"

She nodded as tears filled her eyes as she gasped. He released his grip as she coughed and gagged.

"Gooda. Tha' iz morez like itz. I alwayz zaid I iz nah a violent perzon. I wouldz hate ta be wrong boutz tha'! "

She huffed and puffed every breath. They were precious.

There werent going to be many more.
