Amazing Developement
Posted: 17 Aug 2009 05:05 AM
As I was passing today, I noiced that there seemed to have been a large increase in Vives membership from what I remember.
On closer inspection of the lists I discovered that after a few months of zero new members, on the 2nd February 2009 ; JudithPerry joined.
Since that date over 550 new members are logged. Every day that follows has 3 or 4 new members !
Great news for the existing Vives community, some fresh blood.
However I suspect something else is afoot.
I'd like to think that there is a sad little being out there thats so desperate to be accepted that it types a new aplication every tea break.
Anyway, as this is perhaps the most exciting new developement at Vives for several months, would anyone care to shed some light or just comment ?

I see the signups, but I don't see the players.

I was wondering about that myself.

Just passing through - but you've got some of the same new account names that I've been flagging for deletion on a site I moderate.

Googled a bit on it once some spam posts started showing up with file attachments I didn't trust, and found a user name I had the admins delete asking tech questions about avoiding false positives on some forum security package and how to work out AutoIT scripts to handle forum account creation on some php bulleting board software.

Things to look for:
Accounts created since mid-July (when my problems started)

Bad account names, like this one:
http://vives.dyndns.org/vives/User/UserProfile.aspx?UserName=incest%20porn%20comic

User profiles that include website URLs (to porn, free fake meds, herbal crap, viagra, etc.). ICQ/MSN/AIM and other IM account links as well.

Your forum here is not common since I think Q invented it iirc, but this may make it harder to clean up since you don't have the common forum account creation fields found in the more popular (and regularly targeted) bulletin board packages like SML, vBulletin, etc.

We still get 6 or so bogus accounts created daily - and our forum SQL db crashed and was down for 2 days this past week - we don't know the cause yet, but that was a first in two years of operation. We've since pruned old accounts with no activity in the past 6 months, no post counts, and some other criteria because my manual checks were definitely not catching all of them.

The risks we're looking at are DoS (these accounts are created with automation scripts) through fun stuff like having each of the accounts PM one another, having new accounts created until the server can't handle it, and having forum posts show up from these accounts with links to nasty commercial/shady sites with or without suspect attachments.

We've implemented a captcha last week, but it's not helped yet. Good luck.

And, hello Vives!

I've had a similar problem on our family blog. Names have been similar to:

iirnr.com/map.htmlqeduwohe@gmail.com

and the IP addresses always in a similar range:
194.8.74.xxx
or
194.8.75.xxx

Weird stuff. Since they don't post a bunch of Porn links, but a bunch of gibberish with links to weird products I suspect its ineffective SPAM or just your typical Internet Slaad with a dream of cluttering databases with their internal chaos:

I have been told these are revenue bots trying to get people to click on the account names or links in their profiles. The less people click the links the lower amount of accounts created.
That things like CAPTCHA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA will only slow it down till its cracked. That's the limit of my understanding on the subject.

Thanks Aesir,

I did look at some of the new accounts (I was seeing only the harmless names). We're getting a couple a day.

I think I'll do as you have done and run a script that'll delete these accounts if there is no activity in them.

660 recently created accounts with no further activity or emails deleted.

(those who've registered very recently, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt.)
