"See now, if you can light that candle from ten paces away you'll pass Apprentice Krown."
He concentrated. His left hand was wrapped tightly into a fist, his nails digging into flesh drawing blood, his other hand was out stretched towards the candle a few yards away, yearning for it.
"Come now boy, I could set this whole building on fire from a hundred yards away."
His mind left his body, his essence was upon the candle itself, the dull flame less candle mocking him. He was in space now, the astral plane, he was tapping into he was sucking it towards him, pitifully drawing all his resources.
A cold sweat began to dribble down from his forehead burning his eyes, his finger tips grew warm with anticipation, the candle began to rock slightly, back and forth.
"This is not a talent show Apprentice Krown, stick to the fire."
The candle stopped shaking abruptly and almost slipped off the table.
Violently he shook his fist, counterbalancing it against the heavy weight in his outstretched hand, then, in a flash it happened.
A ball of white light bounced from his finger towards the candle, perching itself like a magnificent eagle on the very tip of the wick.
It was not a great flame, not a powerful one, but it was his first, his first use of magic. |
