I see there are pits in the city of Port where fights are held, and I've heard talk of gambling in the bars with card games. I'd like to see dart gambling, and dog fights. I've yet to see a poker game held in the city of Port, and I'd like to get in on a hand. Most of all, I think dog fighting is a grand sport to have, as it encourages gold bets and the odds can vary depending on the dog.

I get the impression that Port is a corrupt city, especially at the moment with an era of enforced gentrification. The fact is, I'd like to see the hard life in all of its many rings, in the middle class establishements to the dives that only thugs and criminals frequent. A good old fashion fist fight and a few bets. In the worse places, the reputation of the owners and gamblers can change the odds of the game. Never ever bet against the house if you are new, or if there is any question that you cannot defend the title. A chance to use appraise, bluff are two good skills, pick pockets for the cheater at cards, and animal empathy for the astute ranger, or druid (if that is possible, a druid is involved with illegal dog fighting). A rooster fight, sure, is fun. Heck, if you want to drag a bear into the pit and see how many dogs it takes to kill a bear, the skies the limit so long as the guards don't try and break up the sport. Wanted posters can add an element of danger, for the PCs and NPCs. I'd like the option of joining the guards and militia with all of its hinderances, and the possibilities of corruption in the state. I'd think even corruption has rings of a fashion, even as some are driven further than others. What is evil and are dog fights even bad? I think that is a difference of cultures between the elves, the Queen and the bourgeoisie.

I was lagging out and hit the post button ten or so times! I sure hope an administrator deletes the excess ones. Sure, I can ask the question what evil really is, but if I ask that many times karma will come and bite me for certain!

Heh... I've heard of double posts, but I've never witnessed this exactly...

This probably makes me a bad ranger-player, but I've often thought of dominating a grizzly bear or something similar and then bringing it to the pits for someone to fight. If it was a fair fight (bare-knuckle bear fight!) and there was some chance that the player would be killed, maybe it wouldn't be bad rangering... Actually, I guess it would be bad rangering.

Sadly for Vives' city of sin, the most gaming/gambling/competition of this sort takes place in the Port Royale chess hall. I've seen hardly any card sharking but there's at least a few games a week it seems to me (maybe less). Almost as bloody as a dog fight, if you have any empathy for those pieces at all.

DSM had mentioned this before.

perhaps it is time to get some things started.

Regardless of DM initiated gambling/fights/whathaveyou, any PC is certainly capable of organizing a card game, or a fight night, or whatever you fancy.
DM involvement would be nice, but certainly not necessary.

But yeah, if I have time, I'll look into doing something with this

I NEVER said anything about dog fighting!!
Haven't you been reading the news?? That’s worth a good year or two in jail.
I would never put my poor fire breathing puppy in the ring.

The idea was a grand bare knuckle, no singing, no magic PC pit fighting tournament. Oh and maybe something for you magic swingers. With big fluffy hats for the ladies and mint Juleps for all. Oh don't forget luxury boxes for them high rollers.

Ahem... Collars?? Pointy higher-up-than-my-ears collars? The kind of collars that make a mage a mage??

I know you were were thinking collars.

I rest my case.

Yes yes... I was more referring to the "pit fights" in whatever form. with betting and bragging and all that grand stuff.

And I don't see any problem with the dog fighting.
I mean, this is a fantasy setting, and it's likely that only the rangers and druids really get their panties all in a bunch over the mistreatment of animals. Wink.

That, and I just spent some time IG working out the logistics of having dog fights. (being able to use the exact same dog, but give them different appearances, and buffing them up to fight for a lot longer) so watch for an announcement soon about dog fights in the PR underground.

And I'm sure the bare knuckle brawls will follow close behind.

I've already witnessed quite a few staged brawls, none of which had any DM participation (though a DM did throw a certain horrifyingly adorable little hellspawn of a girl after one such event - not that it really applies).

These sorts of things, I think, should be organized by PC's more than by DM's. It requires no fancy tricks that only DM's possess, does not need anything that a band of Players couldn't bring to the ring.

And what fun are card matches if you're not betting real, cold, hard cash?

Luys Card is willing to hold such a match, with approval and backing from the local crime bosses. He is not rich or strong enough to defend the cash boxes without hired hands, and he has no funds to back everyone's bets if the house folds. He is just risky enough to chance with a large sum of money and a pay-per-fight all-bets-are-on illegal fighting matches.

This has the makings of a great and do-able player driven storyline. I'd start asking around Port Royale to find out how to get the permission/backing to do something like this, and begin making these arrangements. The actual fights might just be the beginning of the story, given the kind of scum... *ahem* businessman - not to mention lover of the arts - that you'll be dealing with!

Now I can turn to the other thing on my mind without completely hijacking this thread...
