Eltarial Llanimar: Background and Journal Posted: 09 Aug 2007 09:23 AM |
Eltarial Llanimar (rogue 4 wizard 3)
Eltarial Llanimar is a young elf (110 years old) with white hair and dark eyes. To other elves, she appears very ordinary aside from her hair colour.
Eltarial was brought up by a small community of elves living near Ladreil, and was taught magic, swordsmanship and archery is usual for elves. However while she proved adept in these arts, she soon became bored practising and while her instructor could find much lacking in her technique, she was convinced there was nothing else she could gain from his tuition. It was this that caused Eltarial to leave her childhood home and wander Vives in order to perfect her arts.
Eltarial speaks an unusual dialect of elfish with slightly different grammar but can understand and be understood by anyone that speaks normal elfish. Eltarial’s common is much more normal.
From Eltarial’s journal.
I met a Halfling in black and the power of shadow was with him. Llyle Ashe was he, and no sound he made as he walked. By scarf his visage concealed consitant(ly)…
With elf, Rode, encountered and her manner was base. In home of nobleman where-for perfection of stealth I entered…
In wood by bears (infested), Llyle Ashe as ranger to the safe road escorted. Again his manner strange as though joy had at danger fled…
Elf: Kay Dee met in friendship. On beach spoke we of light…
A being, as moonshine or lantern suspended, appears for (my) apprehension as I travel. It’s nature as still water unrevealing.
(Eltarial’s journal covers everything that happens to her with a similar amount of detail.) |

| As the decaying of mahogany was the true-weaver-of-undeath's-impeding-fabric. As she basked in the gore of her recent victory my star-being remained with her, as for the brightening of darkness... |

((This post servers two purposes. The first is to attempt to provide an at least vaguely credible explanation for Eltarial's sudden disappearance during the recent Naillamne event. The second is that it gives me a chance to remind myself of Eltarial's personality and vernacular, which anyone who has been in game with me over the past few days will have noticed has been a little inconsistent.))
With Amon, Tristan, Salt and Talion, I travelled, through a place of crafted darkness to free an essence of air. A bone-spirit watched gate but bade us pass. With of a gift of warding, the dark guardian burdened us, and though the mother granted Amon many blessings, even the benefactor of our race could not lessen the necessity of our compliance.
Horrors of night and Demons of fire beset us, but by valour we proceeded. The Zephyr above a tower of moment’s sorceries entangled the earth with incandescence, and our power was but to flee its anguish-cry. Within the tower of undeath's-malpractice, iron bound by spirit watched over records of passed anathemas.
When baleful arts of the arcane, barred our path through tiers of stone; we travelled through æther to a distant cavern. Here Magi of the shrouded lands relieved us of our wards. A betrayer wished us ill but we knew not whence, for while it seemed the tokens we had received were but the curses of our enemies, the herald of these tidings too, with-held his allegiances. Our fortune is that he wished the Zephyr freedom from bondage.
My companions returned by æther to sunder the chains, while I trod south to await the being’s release. For a day and a night I followed the being. Lead forward by dark skies and burning earth…
Eltarial closed her journal and looked up at the sky, she was uncertain if even the magic of the dress Kalid had given her would be enough to protect her from the elemental, but she had decided to wait and follow it rather than accompany Salt to Naillamne and she was not going to turn back now; not after following the storm on foot and on horseback almost the length of Vives. Even if it went to Midor She would follow. Eltarial was sure the elemental knew she was there it. Perhaps it even wanted to be followed?
Her mind turned back to Kalid. Why did Tristan hate her? Surely he didn’t really think she was a Menarokian? Of course, she had told Eltarial that she was evil, but she wasn’t serious. That mask she had was creepy though… And Eltarial still didn’t know why Kalid’s eyes glowed yellow in the twilight hours; She had always considered it too rude to ask. Maybe Kalid did still love Tristan? She wasn’t sure why any elf would love a human but stranger things had happened after all.
She realised that someone was approaching… no, someone was fighting nearby. She looked up in time to see the Orc-blood Vrodo dispatching a wolf messily with a kukri. She grimaced with distaste as she rose to greet him. No finesse at all. He didn’t seem to know anything about the elemental. Probably just as well, there wasn’t any need for an Orc-Blood to be involved.
((As yet I have been unable to think of any way around Eltarial’s next disappearance, during the conversation with the demons. Had I thought of it at the time I would have taken the contents of the box moved her to the next area before I left. Probably best to gloss over this.))
The next person to pass that way was a halfling dressed as very small and badly cared for garden, who introduced himself as Eerel. As they spoke the weather worsened. Lightning struck the ground around them causing Eltarial to suggest seeking cover. ‘If ye say so’ was the halfling’s reply, ‘Want te race back to Brandibuck?’ It was only at that point that Eltarial realised that not only was the elemental overhead but that it was trying to kill them. She only just managed to cast a spell to protect herself before she was hit by a bolt of lightning. Her previous determination deserted her, this mission was becoming much too dangerous. ‘Very well, Lets race’ She said meekly. |

((Eltarial is now rogue 4, wizard 3, shadowdancer 1 (got there eventually) ))
Eltarial rose from where she had fallen wandering first why she wasn’t dead and then whether she was. The sky was black. The trees were black. The stones were black. Even the air was black. There was no light.
But she could create light at will. She put on her ring of scholars and was surrounded by a circle of light. Where the light met the darkness there were shadows.
Three of the shadows stepped forward into the light, humans, dressed in black. One of the figures was speaking in a language approaching common. “Sh_d__fo_l_f, L_f fo_sh_dow.” It began. “Shadow for life?” Eltarial repeated. ‘Life for Shadow.’ she thought.
She realised the human was offering her a dagger, and looked up at him, confused. He drew a second identical weapon, and raised it, ready to strike her. She took the blade. Outnumbered as she was, she didn’t really have any choice.
The human pointed his dagger towards his chest. “You want me to kill myself?” The figure shook his head. “For Another” he explained. “From another SHADOWDANCER.”
And they were gone.
“Eltarial?” Mani called from behind a rock. “What were you doing?” Eltarial hid the dagger. She wasn’t sure how much Mani had seen, but she didn't intend to admit that she had been initiated into some mysterious cult.
“Are you alright?” the dwarf asked as she approached. “Fine” She snapped.
What was a shadowdancer? It seemed she was now.
((I'll post a narrative of the rest of the adventure elsewhere. This bit just seemed more relevant to Eltarial's character development than the blood and nightmares story as a whole.)) |
