A very fond farewell

All right... like Henesua, I have been fighting off the pull of RL for a while now, and it’s been a loosing battle. So the time has come to bid you all farewell... for a time.

I know that I won’t be able to stay away forever... in fact I have taken several “breaks” in the past, for various reasons, and I’ve always been drawn back after I’ve gotten my head straight, or RL issues worked out, or what-have-you. Vives is just too great to not want to come back... thanks to all you wonderful players and DMs.

I suppose it’s time to come clean on another matter also.
For those of you who haven’t already figured it out, I am The Shadow.
I’ve been playing here since October of 04 as BKatt, and created a new persona when I became a DM last May.

It’s been an experience... to say the least, but certainly a fun one. I have never had any experience as a DM before this, so thank you to all the folks I have interacted with, for being patient with me... hopefully my “green-ness” wasn’t too apparent. The other DMs are all awesome, (well, except for that Butcher guy... he just likes to kill peopleTongue out ) and I learned a ton from them, so that made things much easier.

I figure there isn’t much point in keeping my identity a secret any more, because when I -do- return, I don’t expect to play Cora as a PC. She has mostly fallen off the map anyway, having reached a stage in her development where there isn’t really anything else I want to accomplish with her... and anything I -would- want to do with her from this point out, would only serve to help move some story or plot along... or whatever.

A huge thanks to everyone who helped make Cora the neurotic little thing she is today. ...you know who you are. (pretty much everyone she had contact with... some more than others)

And with that I bid you all a fond farewell, until such time as I can get things in order and return.

As in the words of our governor... “I’ll be back!”

Well, I suppose I just lost a bet, though, sadly, the player on the other end of that bet isn't playing here anymore. She did have you pegged from day one. I *cough* was off by about three and a half feet and two hundred or so pounds. I'll miss you for a lot of reasons, and the selfish one that your on-times are West Coast USA is the least of them.

Take care.

*emerging from a flash of light and puff of green smoke*

YES! I was right! I love the game within a game of guessing who is who! And I still think that you were Snipes! But I could be wrong, since you've stonewalled me on that one.

*glances back through the smoke and peers at his desk from which a massive black tentacle emerges searchingly*

I'd say I miss ya already, but... somehow since we are fellow Vives FLAKERS it just doesn't carry the same weight. Your presence in Vives was awesome.

*the tentacle him...*

And one last thing... it is not MY fault that you are leaving! Why include...

*...and he's gone*

Bkatt, we've been through a lot, and you were definitely one of my favorite players, and DM's
You'll be sorely missed, and I hope we meet up some time in the future. Keep playing Bass!

I'm not worried.

You've left before, and you came back, and you will again. Said you so yourself. You've been absent enough lately, at least on my schedule, to be missed already. I hope you'll manage to get your A double S back before too long, even if it is without Cora the Infant Slayer.

On the other note: who else could Shadow be ASIDE from BKatt? I've entertained several ideas, but Shadow's factor of 'Annoying' proved to match with that of BKatt on the graph. It's a fairly common way for scientists to discern the identity of unknown materials.

Bah, figures! I decide to make a little comeback to Vives and I find out so many people leave. RL is a pain.

I do hope you'll come back soon. Had a lot of fun playing with you.

Right... as many probably know, I've been back for a while... (think it was less than a month I was away) But......

Now I might dissapear for a completely unrelated issue.
I'm going to be switching my DSL provider, and I have no idea how long it is going to take these numbskulls to do the change over.

Since the new one says they cant even start the order process untill the current one is fully disconnected. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me, but there you have it.

And just for icing on the cake, my current provider just claimed that I am under a year contract.. when I have been on month to month for about 4 years or more now.. so I get to argue over that as well.. fun *flatly*
Just another reason to ditch them.

So... all that to say, if I seem to dissapear for a bit (I fully expect at the very least, a week of no connectivity) you know why.

Ok, just a quick note to say that sometime this weekend (should be Sunday, but since they certainly wont be working on Sunday, who knows.. it might be friday, or could be monday) my DSL is going away... and hopefully will be back on by the end of next week... though I fully expect it to take longer.

*waves* see ya when I see ya.

And with that out of the way, the rest of this post is just me venting... so feel free to stop reading now. (I would have posted in the rant forum, but I already had this thread going, so...)

<rant>

Right... so supposedly any time you re-negotiate price with Earthlink, (which I did back in october) you get locked into a 12 month contract. (supposedly it says so in the fine print........ somewhere... as if I'm going to waste my time looking for it -now-) But at least the guy who made the changes altered it so that I got a month free, and the cancellation charge is a one month fee, instead of $150.

But then the very next day I see charges for $80 on my credit card... so I get to call them back up and ask WTF?

The agent I got had no clue why they would have charged that amount and gave it back as a credit on my DSL account. (not my credit card) *sigh* HELLO!!!! I'm CANCELING my account.

yada yada yada... again in the fine print.. first it goes back as a credit on the account, then after a month or three or so, it will be credited back to your card. jerks

maybe that was an erronious amount that was supposed to be the cancelation fee... and she just credited the whole thing back to me... and now they will forget to charge me the one month fee. if so, it's their own stupid fault, and would serve them right.

which leads me to today... I get a call from ATT asking if I'd be interested in AT&T DSL...
well, yes, as a matter of fact I am, but I was told I have to wait to order it after my current one is disconnected. "We can't put an order through if there is already DSL on the line, so you will have to wait untill your current provider is completely dissconnected and call us back"
Otherwise you don't get the promotional deals, and rebates and junk...

"Oh, no.. we can place the order now, and you can just have the install date pushed back to whenever your current one is disconnected"

Are you SURE? cause I specifically asked about that because I wan't to minimize my down time.

*she puts me on hold for a minute, comes back* "Yes, it's not a problem at all."

...

Do any of these sales people ever know what they are talking about?

So anyway, being the pessimist that I am, I fully expect it TO be a problem.. Billy Jo Bob the installer is going to go uncharacteristicly early to the CO tomorrow to make the connections, see that there is already DSL hooked up, and get all pissed off about it.. go away and blow it off, and next week when I call up and ask why I'm not connected yet, they wont know, and will have to get back to me.. two days later they will finnaly get ahold of their tech, he will tell them that no, he didn't hook it up because it already had DSL, and he wasted such and such amount of time that day when he had a ton of (meaning one) other things to do, to which they will tell him to go and hook it up... then he'll get around to it after another week.. and do a half assed job of it, thinking "I'll show them.. waste MY time will they"... then when I finnaly have it up and running it will be at the wrong speed, or will keep dropping because it was a crappy install job, requireing me to call up again to get it fixed... it will take them who knows how long to get a different tech to go out, because the first one will keep coming up with excuses... yada yada yada... I might see you all in a month or so.

*grimace*
Thats about how these things go, isn't it?

I have a better one. There is a company over here that will remain nameless, a LARGE company, currently offering some pretty dang good deals for phone/satellite/broadband packages. Loads of stuff chucked in free, great bandwidths, you name it. Very shiny.

Here's the catch, currently I use cable DSL. (Which inidentally is provided by another LARGE company currently in dispute with the first). Part of the deal is, naturally enough, that you need to check since it's all provided by satellite and wifi that you can even -receive- the stuff.

Makes sense obviously to do this before you put your name to anything or sign up for any deals.

So... one heads off to the website and enters one's telephone number to be told.

'Sorry, the number you have entered appears to be one which is serviced by a cable provider. We cannot confirm you are compatible until you switch to a BT line."

So.. I'm gonna wipe out what I currently get on the -chance- that I -might- be able to receive their service? (It's by no means 100% coverage).

I rang them (it really was a pretty good deal), explained the problem, to be told that no, we used cable and they couldn't even tell us over the phone whether we would be OK.

ELVES!

Yes, these companies all seem to have their heads up their....

when looking to switch to AT&T, I went to their website to read up on what they offered.. they have a "see if DSL is available for your phone #" link... you click on it and it checks your line to see if you are within reach of a CO, and if so, what speed is available to you.

So of course I try it and it says that it cannot get a reading. (its because there is already DSL on it, but it doesn't know that)

So I call the number it gives to have some tech run the check or look into it.
I tell them that I have DSL already, which is probably the problem, and they say "oh, yeah.. we can't run the test on a line that already had DSL"

So I say that since I have DSL through Earthlink, and Earthlink rents the lines from AT&T, it's kind of a no-brainer that it's available to me, so can you tell me what the turn around time would be... how long will it take from the time I order it will it be installed, and can I arrange to have it hooked up the day after my current one is disconnected?

"We'll have to have a technician go out and run the test on the line directly, to see if it's available to you, and what speeds we can offer"

....Hello! I HAVE DSL from Earthlink... a company that rents its lines from YOU, repackages it and sells it to the public with a few more bells and whistles on it... I already KNOW I can get DSL from you.

No, this sales person was adamant that it had to be tested, or they couldn't tell you.

You know what I think it is... if you call them you get Joe salesman who is told a specific set of rules that he has to follow when answering questions about the service... and those rules are designed around getting the customer to quit the competitors at any cost.. even if you cant get the services you want from this company.

"If we tell them that we can't even check, unless they have their current service disconnected, there is bound to be some people we cant provide the full package to, but since they quit their old one and made the switch, they will be too lazy to switch back, and will just get their regular service through us now"

Then there is Joe telemarketer who gets a completely different set of rules to follow. He is given the task of calling up people who they have already checked themselves, and know what services are available to, and he can entice people away from the competition with shiny promotions and whatnot.

This is probably why when I called them, they were little help, but then I get the call from their telemarketer, and suddenly it's "no problem"... they know everything, and can guarantee it.

Wouldn't be at all suprised if it was the same in your case.
