A Clockmaker's Tale Posted: 15 Jan 2007 05:44 PM |
=============== Alexí Sorvika
Character information: =============== Portrait: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Portraits.Detail&id=268
Hair: A longish, but neatly trimmed brown. Has grown somewhat shaggy of late. Eyes: Pale grey. Dark circles underneath lend them an unsettling hooded appearance. Height: Average. Figure: Well muscled, though not large of frame. Bladework: Is not the most skilled with a blade, but is merciless in placing his strikes.
General Appearance:
- Looks as if he is in the habit of keeping himself well groomed.
- Dark circles have come to be a familiar sight on his face over the past week.
::IC Reference::
-Has returned to Port Royale, though never for long, and he frequently looks ill-at-ease.
-His suit of elven chain has had its links shorn and reforged in several places, allowing his frame the extra room it needs. This may look mildly horrifying to those with a fine eye.
::A Brief History:: The young clockmaker left the White City soon after the public burnings began. He told some that he feared for his business, told others that he feared for the family he hoped to start. Most, though, he told nothing, and they would recall only that he and his wife were simply gone one morning, the doors to his shop padlocked unceremoniously.
He fled to Port Royale with his wife, a nameless pair amongst the throng of nameless refugees.
It was some hard months later before he hung his shingle again. His shop was smaller this time, the neighborhood dingier. People whispered and, for a time, business was hard to come by.
But things settled eventually for the young couple, and although there was never the demand for his work he had enjoyed in Midor, from time to time Frarry or Omiga would buy an assortment of his timepieces, providing him a financial windfall. The locals warmed up to them after awhile and they even became something of a curiousity, the Midoran clockmaker and his wife. The couple and their new home came to suit each other quite nicely, and as routine took hold, the months began to pass as they do...
((After taking a look, this post is probably a work-in-progress. Certainly the top section, anyway. I plan on updating that as appropriate. I intend the IC Reference section to be a space where I can list anything that would be easy to discover about my character, if one so desired... the things that Alexi is "doing" while I'm sleeping or in class or whatever.)) |

Notes on the Defense of Port Royale Posted: 20 Jan 2007 02:59 PM |
*These writings can be found in a small, locked, leatherbound business ledger, behind a cursory few pages of mundane business records. This is nearly always kept on its owners person, tucked discreetly into a shirt or boot.*
============================================================= *the entry begins, dated* =============================================================
Midor's crops razed by Our Foe.
> Victims (so far): Port, Brandibuck, Midor, __Paws___, __Gladden__. > Can/should we salt the earth there? Too early? We will face them eventually. - - > Can we be unseen? While on campaign in Ferein? - - > Speak with PRG. Unsure. *crossed out* Can think of no other allies in this. *end cross, then* KD. - - > Agriculturalist: How much? How deep? How many needed?
Midor at war with Ferein. Confirmed by 3... perhaps four. Memory fails me. I have seen the last of my home. I hardly recognized it.
> Have begun to assemble in the Plains as early as two days prior. > Ferein nearly certain to recall deployed forces (see BM, below) - - > What will Midor do after? Can they be led to the Atalan? - - - - > Should this be PRG top priority? Speak with HW re: this.
Spoke with BM re: safe haven > Roughly 7000 remain, our single vessel clearly inadequate to accomodate. Seek out C. - - > Speak to HW re: matching funds to double number of raised troops
Was lukewarm to PRG proposal. Apparently had all but decided on BV.
>His contentions: 1. BV in greater peril. 2. Closer in proximity. < - - Has point. 3. "Heavily invested" 4. Desires literal "written invitation" from the QA. - - > Feasibility?
>Our contentions: 1. Walls, outer and inner, if Northern Gate can be barricaded. South road is a problem. 2. Sea lanes for grain imports if layed siege. - - > From? No ideas here. - - > Complication: Midoran naval strength? C? Former paladins amongst Our Timely Saviours? 3. Numbers. Brandibuck guard decimated. Dwarves more vulnerable in BV than their halls. 4. Holds superior position from which to strike at Our Foe.
> Does he understand the gravity of situation? More concern for hin than kin. > Is he necessary? What about the dwarf Coruva? Possible to sway WB?
> Meeting: most prudent course needed.
BM also mentioned purchase of adamantine golems, is seeking donations.
> Who is his source?
> Will be commanded democratically. - - > Questionable. - - > Speak to PRG about this.
> Is a rival bid possible? Quick action needed. - - > HW - - > QA - - > BH
Our Last Stand
> Should we be considering this? Overly grim?
> How can Atalan possibly be defeated in their homeland when we are so easily in ours?
> We must begin to make our case.
*forlorn, at the bottom of the page*
Alaine, I miss you terribly. Please come back to me... I cannot face a world like this alone.

((The observant reader might notice that this style is similar to that of a few other (excellent) posters to the forums. I hope this is taken in the spirit of imitation being the highest form of flattery, as that is how it is intended. Plus, it makes for an interesting read. I also ask that you leave this knowledge out of the game, as Alexi can, on occasion, be somewhat single-minded in pursuit of his goals.)) |

*the entry begins with three diagrammatic sketches of the inner workings of a particular timepiece. Three small cogs are circled with the notation: I need these!*
> Sought out C to no avail.
>The designated contact point is locked and shuttered. Relocate.
- - > The obvious choice: too much traffic? - - > The cellar: symbolic value, what of the native?
>Discovered tunnel system underneath city, leads directly into lower Port.
- - > Investigated with KM. Were not able to determine extent of caverns. - - > Why is this not being sealed???
> Attempted to speak with HW re: recent developments, was thwarted by GITMOTR. Tomorrow, certainly no later.
> Met KD, lost nerve; do I trust her? Who do I trust?
- - > C: Perhaps. No indication either way. Must feel him out. Certainly others in town know more of him.
- - > HW: Merchant, financeir. Heavily vested in Port. We have mutual interest here.
- - > KM: Dependable in battle. Skilled tracker. Why does he care for Our Fair City?
- - > LE: Met in passing, offered aid, monetary and otherwise. Charming. Seems kind.
- - > GITMOTR: Odd. Either something on shirt, or found something else overly interesting. Would not depart when hinted at.
>Progress is slow!
>List not very promising. Others of like mind must be found.
- - > Where?
>Sent letter to mother-in-law. Am not hopeful of timely arrival.
*added hastily to the bottom of the page*
**URGENT**
>FWWCTA: seeks to gather defenses in Buckshire: This is folly!
- - > Not defensible! - - > What are we protecting? Why? Why? Why? Why? - - > We must plead our case soon!

Spoke with HW at some length
> Regarding the dwarves: make public offering, hope for fraction of remaining. How many can we support? >Journey to Tockticken, deliver warning, inquire as to possibility of PR bid / amount / speed of construction and deployment. < - - See RV, below - - > GITMOTR is apparently trusted friend. Endorsement sufficient for now. > Shown the docks/ small fleet. Four - five small vessels, two large. - - > HH looking better as base of operations. >Agreed that tunnels are vulnerability, will pursue further. >Also agreed at Port needs a representative voice at all gatherings of the powerful. Who?
> Having the most difficult time reading this man. He speaks with some authority in military matters, I find his points to be well reasoned, unsure of exact agenda. Time will bear this out.
Spoke to RV in a chance meeting
> Former Paladin: travels in the Order's regalia > Possible kindred spirit? Seemed to have compatible assessment of our situation. > Considered quatrain to be well metered. Some success here. Must attempt another.
> Very difficult to read, asked many questions of me, answered little of herself. This went poorly: more was given than was received.
> Regardless: former paladin could be valuable ally.
- - > She fights: fundraising; what other capacities? - - > Where is she attached? Loyalties, commitments? - - > Seek out reciprocation as to the futility of our struggle.
> Is BM's contact! Fortuitous! (see reverse) - - > 500 000 currently collected. Implied much more needed. - - > This needs a final decision soon. - - > Bad PR PR? HW was evasive re: this. Perhaps limited supply is assumed.
Spoke with C:
> Was badly drunk. Thinking of Alaine. > Seemed to think (as I recall) that dwarves would require written invitation - - > Job for HW
*scrawled miscellany*
Is Pride the first to go? Has mine been? < - *several things have been written and erased here*
Settle bill at Cutlasses
Find supply of tin. With Midor at war, will need to cast broken gears myself.
BWWBOLS: I am of solitary opinion on this matter: I will bite my tongue and lend aid. I pray that time does not bear me out on this.
>Be visible! Leave fear at home!
> Wear: Scale with navy trim:
1. Check bindings. 2. Replace broken links on right arm, missing scales on rear right shoulder. 3. Polish
>Important questions:
1. Defensive encampment? What is timeframe for offensive? 2. Is this the only outlet to the surface? 3. Atalan's numbers? Women? Children? Are we talking genocide? It might be necessary.
*cryptically, underlined several times*

Confer with PRG.
> OTS withdrawn from BV, Ferein remains. Was not expected. - - > What does this mean for PR? - - > What about the long run?
Taken room in TWF:
> Base for southern activity: who can know? HW? > Travel tomorrow: observe movement of WC. Vantage point? - - > Did my spyglass survive the fire?
Unable to reach CC
> Underwater tunnels only access? > Pity- Had wanted to see this myself. RV's description intriguing! - - > Obtain cogs? - - > Purchase books? Only in gnomish?
BOID: Absolute boor. Dangerous soldier. No future interaction desired.
> LITMWTIPC
Met with RV: chance meeting (?)
> Missed deadline! *string of expletives*
> Evasive re: current attachments.
> As I read her:
1. Ulterior motive? She was in good company, but not for the same reason as I?
2. Compromised integrity? Look into this. Could be useful.
3. Her questions have purpose! - - > Remain sober in her company.

Urgent news:
> Gladden razed, Ferein repels attack - - > Nearly full round: CC and Buckshire remain. - - > What are PR's contingencies? So many unanswered questions.
> FWWCTA losing will, says LE.
- - > Support not lent. - - > Who will take up the mantle? - - > No ideas here. Avoid until the worst has come and gone.
> BT: wants meeting. Offered work.
- - > Intriguing. Was caught off-guard. - - > Offered dagger, no cost. Fine workmanship-- why? - - > LE expressed lack of faith. We shall see.
Met: HW.
> Survived assassination attempt not four days prior. No others listed attacked to date.
- - > Mind your surroundings. - - > Suspects no further attacks?
> Source in palace is wasted effort. Jessup has more influence than suspected. - - > This is a dead end.
> Aided LE in unfortunate work in Gladden. Have spent much time with since.
> She is kind in the most absolute sense of the word.
- - > An ally to be trusted? - - > Mind her flattery. *crossed out* It isn't genuine. *crossed out* - - > DIWWST!
- - > Pass on her cooking.
- - > Seems to know every third person on Island-- a useful contact.
> Introduction to ST.
- - > Offered apprenticeship, of sorts. Rabianara trained. Cannot find a good reason to turn this down. Training, yes. Coffee- perhaps. This way lies trouble.
- - > Strong bond with LE. These seem to be package deal. - - > Confrontation, provoked by KD; returned in kind by ST-- bad blood here. - - > A man? "Silver Sage" Something else?
Have aquired casing for possible RV commission.
> Rear engraving:
*several sketches fill this space, some are simple monograms, others contain designs ranging from floral to stark geometric, to various images of Midoran symbolism-- there are several variations on a broken-winged dove.*

Interlude Posted: 02 Feb 2007 12:07 AM |
~~~~~~~
* Darkness yields to grey.*
The young man awakens, and for a moment does not remember where he is.
* Shape takes form against the canvas of black.*
The rough wooden flats of a bunk fill his vision.
He feels no warm body beside him,
no comfort can be found.
* The wailing of the wounded brings him to his feet.*
Even through the walls, he hears them.
He can tell their cries by now,
the dying from the bereaved.
* There is no mistaking it.*
Dawn breaks slowly over Port Royale these days.
The haze of a broken city yields slowly,
it is convinced that it has won.
* The young man dresses quickly.*
He has a long road to travel today.
His legs will become leaden with weariness,
but they are not leaden alone.
* He is pressed into flight, into hiding.*
Amongst those that lay dead and lay dying,
altruism lies bloodied as well.
He knew it all along.
* There is something that must first be done.*
A farewell is given.
Alone.
He leaves a part of him with her.
Gone.
A memory of a life taken from him.
* The young man sets to the road.*
He has a long road to travel today,
but he does not care.
Before long,
his footsteps
all
sound
the
same.
Writings from TWF Posted: 04 Feb 2007 07:27 PM |
=========================================================== *the entry begins, dated; the notes here are distinctly neater, more deliberate than above* ===========================================================
> I have arrived only a day previously in TWF. My accomodations are simple, but
quite adequate. It is not nearly so out of the way as I had once believed-- already I have seen
and have been seen by several acquaintances (LE, TV, _ST_, _ID_, _KD_). Regardless, I have my
reservations about relocating to Ferein, so it seems my hands are tied. Perhaps it would be
best to relate my situation to the Rangers. I shall consider this.
- - > Vonrolde seems most amenable.
1. Small cask of ale. 2. Offer aid with construction // Discuss then? Two days? Three?
> First full night of sleep since the attack. The pine and saltwater that carry on the
wind have eased difficulties somewhat. This settles it, in my mind. Should the wrong elf catch
wind of my accent (still distressingly thick) this shall have been in vain. I'd certainly
have no more anonymity there, regardless.
- - > Length-- window to cliff base: ~60 ft? 80?
Manageable: acquire this length. Will further ease sleep.
> Have travelled to MT. Will begin mining in the morning. Natives suprisingly friendly,
though none were interested in employment. Terms were fair, by my standard. Am anxious to
begin the RV commission.
_X_ ::Casing *crossed out* Final approval: rear engraving *crossed out*.
Choice will be quite suitable-- a piece to behold. *added aslant, to the side* considering the subject
Given: 3 sapphires, one enchanted ruby. Standard setting desired.
> Have spent much time with ST to date:
- > TFW not nearly as secluded as suspected. ST neighbor, by happenstance. - > Intuition correct here? - > Perhaps; though she has given much, and asked nothing.
These things give me pause:
1. Goaded in presence of TV. Her intent was clear. 2. Favor is showered. Self restraint is difficult. - - > Is this as she wants it? CAREFUL 3. Goaded twice (?) 4. Her manner: LE has taken notice of this. // Speak with her. 5.
*an ample space of blank page is left open here*
- > Spoke of her "problem"
- - > KD's warning borne out?-- she spits venom laced with truth, it seems. - - > This must be thought on. TOSIIC.
> I have been pushed to breaking for lack of sleep. I cannot work. I cannot think.
My wits are not about me. Spoke of my Suffering to LE, ST, TV. The wages
are apparent.
- > LE: not overly troubled by full explanation-- offered backrub and promise of meditation exercises (?). I had nearly forgotten the comfort of anothers' touch.
- > ST: Herbal tea: some success-- has dulled the nightmare, allowed for sleep.
- > TV: No outward reaction; sympathies surely offered inwardly.
I dare not indulge much in any of these.
My warning has been dire, and will not be repeated.
Still: TBWOS, FBTBOF.
Urgent news:
> Have met a man, Talion Deraith, who related news of Tukar. - - > "Orclun" (?) now enslaved by grey dwarves - - > Gladden replanted. // For what purpose?
1. Resettlement? This is my intuition... though not truly convinced as yet 2. Crop failure below? Unrest? 3. Revenge?
> Information in dire short supply > MT believes trap for Midor. - - > Dubious, the Midor I know will not ride to task. - - > Ambush more effective? - - > Seek others' counsel. I doubt I am of solitary opinion.
Have seen Tukar for myself
> MT correct on most counts > Population controlled by three grey dwarves, apparently. > Magical control? None evident to companion magister, nor to me. > Women and children possibly held.
=> Vonrolde amenable to proposition. Will be advised of those unfamiliar. - - > Another cask. PR.
=> Have made overdue journey to Seven Sisters. No word of Irene or Tomas, nor at Temple. This is good news, I believe. Alander has passed, however; will plant the oak, as I have promised him.
