Travel from the Brandibuck Bakery to Port Royale + Travel from Port Royale to Sand Dune Island + Digging in the sand with a shovel until it broke + Travel Back to Port Royale + Time Spent at the Tinker's Forge = 1.5 Hours = 3 Empty Juice Bottle Containers. *pats self on back*
Tomorrow, I'll try to find fruit. God willing, at least one of my attempts will succeed - Lo, I shall have made juice. This was my first concerted effort at utilizing Vives's crafting system. Though I think it's great, I started to chuckle uncontrollably when I realized that I'd spent more time planning out and executing my juice expedition (likely orchards, expedient routes for newbies) than I have most dungeon crawls. |

Yeah, that'll happen. Once you gain a couple levels in the crafting, you'll find you get a much better yield. Not to mention a few higher character levels to speed up travel time...
Not to mention you don't HAVE to make one ingot at a time, or one bottle at a time... If you put a lot of material on a table all at once it'll make as many things as it can all in one swing. There are benefits and detriments to this however, as if you fail, you lose ALL the material and you only get one roll. Still, when I start out in a craft, I usually start by attempting, say, 3 ingots at a time, or 3 bottles at a time...
A good trick is to make 100 of whatever it is you're making. After making 100 anythings, chances are whatever you're making is a lot easier than when you're started. Making ale, and alchemy tend to be really good things to do this with since the big parts require lots of little parts from the same tree. I gained 17 levels in Alchemy when I made my first 100 Heal potions. |

The only ways I can craft and keep my sanity is one of four ways:
1. Do it with a friend 2. Listen to music 3. Play the fife 4. Read a book |

Well done!
The only things I've ever crafted were the things that are needed for Versati quest. I can't stand crafting. So much better things I can spend my time doing.
I really don't understand how anyone can enjoy it, but I guess whatever floats your boat. |

Okay...I've said it before and watched the odd counter-flame fly, but someone makes a post on this every few months, so I'll say it again. Glass sucks.
And...and...and it's so blatantly unfair to all without the martial weapon feat that the fruits of mining and smithing are so...so...so much better than the fruits of alchemy, gem crafting, and every other type of crafting in the game. Does it really make sense that an iron dagger is worth more than a nicely crafted scarab that adds 2 to strength? The scarab took a heckuva lot more work to make. The level 1 fighter who makes the dagger doesn't even have to make his own molds.

I agree with this to a point. As far as low level crafting goes, weapon making seems to be the most profitable. Selling to merchants anyway. For higher level crafting, selling to other players turns much more rewards. At least that I've seen. - Heal Potions - Malar bags. And someone that isn't very skilled at fighting can come by everything needed. Where for high level smithing, its nearly impossible to find the very best stuff, and live to tell the tale. Also on a side note (hope its ok to put this here) I've come across a merchant that sells gem crafting molds. So for a quick buck, weapons are nice. But I'll expect an alchemist can turn a better profit over all. |

Re: The Math Posted: 28 Apr 2006 07:26 PM |
I have to disagree with this assertion that an alchemist can turn a better profit. Although with a split class spell-caster (a very poor choice as far as power goes), I can obtain almost all of the standard ingredients - there is nothing that i can make which will receive big returns in a trade. How much is a heal potion worth? 500 gp? 1000 gp? Somewhere in there. On the other hand, there always seems to be a big demand for bags. How much is a malar bag worth 30000 gp? 60000 gp? (Admittedly, tailoring seems to be harder than alchemy) Those numbers aren't even close.
I also agree that it does seem very difficult to come by the better metals. But a magic weapon is worth ten times or more to both the stores and other players.
That said, I think ALL crafting is frustrating. And I blame (as others have) the horrid random number generator that is part of NWN. It gets extremely streaky with the low numbers. There have been many many times where I have produced well below the percentage shown due to a consistent string of 5's and below.
I am hoping to find some crafting Easter Eggs. I have yet to ask around for uncoventional recipes, but they've got to exist right? So I can put up with the horrid math, if there are some hidden treasures to find. |

As far as my experience has gone, tailoring is the way to go if you'd like to see what crafting is all about - not too many intermediate steps, most stuff is fairly centrally located, and it favors physical and mental types fairly evenly (INT and DEX based). Also the ingredients are readily available and the products are very cost-efficient.

| I'm not really in it for the GP, just to add dimension to my character. By the way, she failed at her attempts to make juice. She introduced herself to several people as "No Juice Ever," so as an RP device the craftng worked perfectly... though I would have liked that juice, too. ;) |

Alright... The good Barron decided to prove his point, and has done so. I hearby revoke my prior statements, and admit weaponcrafting is very overbalanced when it comes to coin. - BUT - having done a few different crafts, I prefer the others for their roleplaying aspect. Weapon crafting is just dull. |
