A sleepless night
Posted: 02 Mar 2006 07:20 PM
A wolf howled in the distance breaking the silence of night. A dim flame licked and danced on a small candle placed on his dresser. The stained glass mural in the room was casting a multi-colored collage across his wall. It swayed back and forth along with the candle. A somber waltz celebrated by the darkness of night. This night was filled with the thoughts of days past. They swirled in his head, slipping in and out of existence. An unconscious dance that mirrored the spectacle of wavering lights on his wall. Conn thought back to the retrieval of the ring. He was successful in that endeavor, but he still did not have word of Sirac’ safety. That thought swirled away like a pair of dancers at a great ball. Another crept to the front of the mass. A memory that stung with the effort of its remembrance. Lillian. She was standing before him, her pale blue eyes glowing with a slight intensity. This was the last he had seen her. The last anyone had seen her. The memory of her pale blue eyes began swirling back into the mass of colors. The pace in the dance shifted as that memory slipped away.

His thoughts swirled around the whole of Vives. Changing in color and intensity as he randomly passed over each part. Black and threatening where the memories burned into his mind as he passed over the lands of Syn. The darkness crawled and swam like a great black serpent in his mind. Green broke through the darkness. It poured into his mind until all the black was engulfed. Lush and alive with the brilliance of nature and the majesty of life itself were his memories as he passed over the forests of Ferein and Mirghul. So beautiful were the memories yet full of their own strife. The colors swirled again and became grey, solid and unmovable as his thoughts passed over the halls of Bregodim. The colors swam Brown and gold and stung with the heat of the sun as he flew over the Kobai desert. The colors dulled to a frigid blue as he passed over the frozen wastes. His thoughts rested on Midor. It was alight with red and white clashing together in a struggle that threatened to engulf the world. All these thoughts twisted and exploded with the myriad assortment of a thousand faces and times remembered. So many things to do and so many choices where left ahead of him.

A wolf howled in the distance breaking the silence of night. Conn sighed and turned away from the colors on the wall. Tomorrow was another day. Another chance to paint some new memories and to put to rest the ones that where plaguing his psyche. The night slipped away and sleep took him.

Conn was a wolf proud and strong. He ran with the wind, and sang with the stars.

A dream.
Posted: 11 Mar 2006 03:10 PM
A whisper of a dream; in life reflected. He was a silver and black wolf with bright blue eyes.

The mist hung close to the forest floor. The moon was large and hung low over the forest casting an eerie glow throughout the mist. The night had a dull silence that was broken only by the scattered hooting of overhead owls, and the rare animal that dared to brave the night. This was a night for predators. He stalked the forest without making a sound. An invisible predator that walked the shadows seen only by the most trained of eyes.

An explosion of sound rang out highlighted by the deafening silence of the night. Three wild dogs flashed by close on the heels of a pure white rabbit. They were mangy and tattered. Their eyes were alight with the berserk pleasures of a kill. This hunt was not for food, it was for the pure pleasure of an easy kill. The rabbit was fast, but the intensity of the prolonged chase was taking an obvious toll on the small creature. The wolf saw the desperate need that throbbed it its eyes. He could almost hear the panic that raced through its mind. He took flight before they were even past. He was fast and deadly and set to this gruesome task. There would be blood tonight.

Almost immediately he was at the heels of the one dog that trailed behind. It was smaller that the other two. Likely along for any scraps that were left of the precious prey. They crashed through the forest dodging tree and limb. The noise the three were making served only to blanket the sound of their grim pursuer. A twig snapped. The small ones ears picked up the fate that traveled behind, but it was too late. A singular yelp rang out in the night. There was no time wasted. A drop of blood on the sliver fur of the wolf reflected in the moon light as he picked up the chase anew. They were aware of him now. Their pace had quickened. They ran now not only for their prey, but also from the threat that gloomed behind.

The chase went on for some time. The rabbit skirted bush and tree. Desperately trying to lose its prey, but it was not enough. The dogs were quick and fueled by the rage that consumed them now. The chase would be over in a heartbeat. The rabbit tripped and skidded along the forest floor it tried to get up but it was useless. The chase was over. At once the largest of the dogs was upon it. The wolf leaped, and the second dog dropped. It was quick work. A streak of blood painted the forest floor, as the air filled with the metallic smell unique to blood. The last dog turned. Its hunger was quickly forgotten to a single breath of this moonlit night. Now it was replaced with a need. The small rabbit limped away it was no longer a trophy.

They circled around each other.

“Why do you interfere in my hunt wolf?” The dog growled. “I have a right to this prey!”

It was breathing hard and foam dripped from the corners of its mouth. The creatures’ fur was stained with the blood of a life of killing. Its eyes were black and reflected the void in its soul. This beast was evil in its most primal of forms. A mockery of the balance found in the cycle of natural things.

The wolf gave what seemed to be a smile. “This was not a hunt. You kill for pleasure this night.” The wolf leaped in a flash of talon and fang.

The night had a dull silence that was broken only by the singing of a black and silver wolf with bright blue eyes. A prayer given to moon for the killing he had to do this night.

The Red Moon.
Posted: 23 Mar 2006 05:03 AM
He ran. He ran as fast as he could, but it was no use. His foe was gaining quickly. With every passing second, the distance between them lessened. Panic began to set in as his lungs burned for air and his sides ached. Trees blurred past, as he struggled to navigate the dense forest. Every rock and branch became another chance for him to slip and succumb to the fate that lurked behind. The night was dark except for a red hue that permeated the forest. It was the moon. It hung scarlet in the night sky, like one large bloodied eye. The air was thick and metallic. He struggled to pull it into his lungs, but the smell of it sickened him. All around creatures chipped, and growled for his blood. The very shadows themselves seemed to be trying to slow him down. They clawed at his legs, and danced mockingly before him. It was time he faced what lurked behind. The black and silver wolf with bright blue eyes came to a stop in a clearing, and turned determined to face his opponent.

From the forest burst a large moving shadow, and at its center glowed two red eyes. The wolf turned to face it. Eyes glowed in the trees and bushes all around ready to take in the grisly show. The shadow came to a stop right in front of the wolf. It swayed and flowed like liquid until it settled into a mirror image of the wolf.

“Why do you run from me? I am your strength! I am your fury! Except me and learn the true strength of rage. Join with me and you will know the thrill of the hunt, and the glory of the kill. Taste the blood of your enemy, and you will gain its power!” The shadow wolf growled. All around the howls of animals rang out at its words.

The silver wolf leaped at the shadow, but it was useless. He passed straight through it, and landed hard on the other side. The shadow struck at him with claws that ripped through his side. Shadows reached up from the forest floor and wrapped around the wolf drawing it to the ground.

“There is no use wolf. My shackles are off. You are mine!” The howls all around became loud as the shadow grew larger until it was all that the wolf could see. Then it pounced!

Conn awoke in his room covered with sweat, and breathing rapidly. The memory of the dream was rapidly fading. He realized that his hands were throbbing with pain. He held them up to his face. There was blood dripping down his arm from his fingertips. He looked down and saw that there were long scratch marks on his bed. He stood up and dressed slowly. He strapped his axe to his belt and headed out of the lodge, and into the night.
