Super Bowl ? Posted: 03 Feb 2006 06:46 PM |
Besides taking a super spoon to have a super meal..... can someone explain to me how the super bowl works?
Im guessing its kinda like the equivalant of a football league or some kinda world cup, but just in America with American teams going at it for a trophy and bragging rights for a year.
(just for the record I'm English, I dont live under a rock and we dont all drink Tea :D )
So why is the SB such a big event? Does the team that wins get aload of money? Do you have to qualify or is it a huge tournament involving all the teams?
I'm just curious cuz I hear about this 'Super Bowl' thing every year and all i know is its a sort of comp between American football teams.... i dont really know much else about it apart from that... and from playing madden nfl once or twice... it seems quite a stop start stop start game... not very fluid at times.... anyway i cant judge something i know 'jack' about, anyone spare a few moments to explain to NFL/SB n00b :D
(TiA) Thanks in Advance

The Super Bowl is the greatest sporting spectacle in the world.
Cricket? Wussy.
Rugby? Brainless.
Tennis? Besides watching women grunting; totally without merit.
Basketball? Egomaniacs.
Hockey? Worthwhile, but not for everyone.
Baseball? ZZZZZZ
Beach Volleyball? A worthwhile Olympic addition if only for the bathing suits.
Curling.....yeah, that's enough for now. |

The reason that the Superbowl is such a big deal in America, TLR, is because unlike most other sporting championships, it ISN'T a tournament: it is the single game that decides the NFL championship. Superbowl Sunday here isn't an official national holiday, but it's given far more reverence than most others - I'd say it's surpassed in importance only by Thanksgiving (barely) and Christmas.
The winners DO receieve money, but it's so inconsequential compared with the average annual salaries of the players and in comparison with the honor and glory associated with the win, that most people don't even know the exact amount. The winners all receive highly decorated championship rings, a trinket they will keep for the rest of their lives and wear with pride whenever they go to important functions.
Another aspect of the Superbowl that has grown in recent times is its importance to the world of advertising - unlike Christmas and other holidays, this one is centered around a television broadcast.. thus you have millions and millions of people all watching the same thing, so commercials during the Superbowl are the most expensive (and most widely seen) there are. Companies typically debut new, innovative, funny, shocking, etc. commercials during the Superbowl, and many folks (including myself) watch it more for the commercials than they do for the actual game.
I don't watch football during the regular season, but I do watch the Superbowl. It's undoubtably the single greatest day in American sports.
