Thoughts and Lyrics of Ara'leth Sel'ruin

Entry I
I find myself suddenly leagues upon leagues away from my home, and largely in solitude. It has been that, for several weeks, the leaves crunching underfoot have been my sole companionship. Though the quiet of the woods I have traveled has been therapeutic, the lack of good conversation has not. It is for this reason that I write now, though I fear that my writings will become, rather, a chronicle of the passing of Elbereth. It is in Her service that I now find myself.
But I suppose that the beginning should start with the beginning.
Hear then, future reader, for I am Ara’leth Sel’ruin, son of Ea’ren. I have just come upon my 127th spring: one dawned with cold pale light, and birthing tainted, spoiled crops. Elbereth has indeed fallen ill. I have been asked, by a concerned member of the Ferein Court to travel to Port Royale and act as liaison with the elven community there… as I have done such work in the past. It seems that my place during this crisis will not be Ferein, as I would like. However, Ferein has many warriors better than I for her defense, and I was promised that I would be recalled immediately if the worst should come to pass so that I may mourn properly.
In what has been nearly four weeks of travel by foot, I’ve had an excess of time in silence. I am heartbroken to write that I have cracked my wind-pipes, I’ve been thusly plunged into silence for nearly the entirely of my travels- I must remember to look for a music store in this city of Port Royale, if indeed they have such things. I’ve passed the time as best I can (alas, I left my books of poetry at home) by composing a short piece. It is my intent- once finished, to perform it for … perhaps in taverns frequented primarily by elves, to see what sort of support for the effort in Ferein might be found.
