A wide grin played across his face as he sat across the table from the diminutive halfling, assessing his every move and word. He had performed a simple task for him, had taken a bit too long, and unforeseen complications interfered with the success, but he at least could be trusted with large amounts of coin, and large amounts of valuable items. He dug a bit further, trying to assess Joni's full worth.
A few uninteresting questions passed, mostly about Joni's various talents and interests, and he listened, but not fully, as a distracting thought worked its way into his head. After the impromptu interrogation, his look focused, causing him to furrow his brow slightly. Joni shifted a bit, somewhat uncomfortable, considering that perhaps he had somehow inspired the ire of the powerful, and possibly mad, wizard.
"You consider yerself a salesman?" Balthor asked, no hint of what he was thinking apparant in his body language. Joni sat up straight, a small glint of pride sparkling in his eyes, and nodded vigorously. "Aye, datsh what U'hm besht at!"
Balthor nodded his approval. He continued down his line of thinking. "If I were t'give ya summin' ta sell, couldja sell it f'me?" Again, Joni nodded. Good, Balthor thought. This was going well.
"Y'see," Balthor sat back and breathed a sigh of exasperation, as if to claim exhaustion in the grand scheme of things, "Balthor is a powerful wizard, but his time of adventure, an' 'is time of makin' new friends is startin' t'pass. What I need is a hand in th'market, somebody fresh, somebody more willin' an' more personable ta sell m'wares through." Joni hung on every word, inspired by the thought of earning coin from the obviously powerful, well-connected, and very rich dwarf. He nodded, somewhat distractedly, and then gestured for Balthor to continue.
"An' so too do I need eyes an' ears..." he trailed off, an eyebrow raised in his direction. Was he being a bit too forward with his true desires? He ignored that notion and quickly added, "ta keep track of events that I might know how best ta profit from them by providin' th'right wares at th'right time." Joni nodded, thinking inwardly for a bit and then spoke up "Then Uh'm yer eyesh an' earsh," he responded in his peculiar accent. Balthor grinned widely. "Excellent."
After discussing pay and times to retrieve reports, Balthor provided the halfling with a few small items to sell, shook his hand firmly, offered a nod, and began to took his entrance. As he reached the door of the Cross Cutlasses, he glanced back, and spoke aloud. "Stick wit me, lad, an' ye'll go far." Joni nodded and called back to him. "I will!"
Balthor chuckled as he walked out into the street, whispering to himself.
"Very far indeed." |

As the dwarven mage left, Joni decided he was in need of more ale. Waved to the bartender who immediatly came to fill up another cup.
Joni was smiling inside as the memories of the day he left Brandibuck to pursue fame and fortune came back to his mind.
He was coming from a family of local artists and crafters and his father was a very demanded bard not only in Brandibuck but also in the neighbour villages. Joni grew up listening to all those songs about heroes and glorious battles for fortune and honour and always dreamed to become a subject of such tales.
One day, Joni decided that his little vale was too small for his dreams and, against his father's will, he left to explore the big towns and magic places he heard so much about.
All those months of travelling to seek for adventures finally paid off: the dwarf seemed to be a wealthy and powerful lord and it was very nice to be allied to one like him. It was Joni's chance to gather gold and all sort of magical trinklets the old dwarf would give him as payment for completing the... tasks.
Joni lighted his pipe and continued to make plans. "Maybe I could even learn sum o' his arcane tricks! Who knos..."
He throws a coin on the table and get up to leave as the the red bearded bartender aproaches.
- Be careful with your friendships, kid. Some people might look very respectable on the outside... but who knows what they carry in their hearts...?
- Bah! An' wha' d'ye kno old mân? - Joni replied with and enraged glance - D'ye kno who I be? I be Joni Goldfoot, ye ol' sod... and many a bard will sing 'bout me deeds in dis very tavern!
"Dis will be a good life" he though as he passed through the doorway |

Balthor chuckled, sitting back on his couch. Two more foot-tall constructs wandered about his room, organizing his things. For his own amusement, the wizard had given different instructions on how things should be ordered and where materials and objects should be placed, and was finding a good deal of amusement at the tireless work of Scrap Metal Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, as they worked feverishly to complete a task that the other two made impossible.
For a short time he considered whether or not the constructs had the capacity for frustration, and decided that they must, for no living creature would be able to perform the job without uttering at least a few curses. He grinned, and went back to his work, sorting out papers and orders, and contemplating his meeting with Connavar.
Conn had agreed to a position within his growing business, and he had named him "Master of Expeditions." For a price that he would work out based on circumstance, Balthor would send him out with a small team (or to collect a small team) to investigate the profitability of certain areas, and bring back reports on materials, treasure, and relative resistance that he might form a more formidable mining group to come back with the materials he required.
He chuckled to himself. He had himself a salesman, an adventurer, a number of people working for him collecting the materials on his current projects, a number of backed up orders, and a variety of letters he had sent out that would hopefully only continue to prove to his personal gain, and the profit of all those around him. Shuffling the papers around, he nodded slowly. Things were ever improving for the dwarf. |
