Foray into the Swamp
Posted: 14 Dec 2005 04:39 PM
Notice attached to every inn, watering hole, and shop in Port Royale and Buckshire:

A YOUNG WOMAN NEEDS HELP

I must venture into the Buckshire Marsh to recover a rare herbal curative to save the life of a maiden. I have tried to do it myself, but was repulsed by the denizens. I call on every available sword in the area to venture forth with me and help to avert this terrible tragedy.

I shall marshall at the Buckshire Trading Post at noon. Please be fully prepared.

Thank you for your assistance,
Ulalume A'Midori
Knight Errant of Midoran

((I would love to do this tomorrow 12/15/05 at 10PM GMT... pls RSVP if you can ;)))

((Despite the conclusion of the actual quest by nonviolent means, I would still like to head into the swamp and avenge the severe, Seven-Sisters-summoning beating I took at the hands of an irate Shambling Mound. I will hunt the shark, but I won't kill it - now where's my dynamite?))

"You know, a gong. Large, flat object that you hit when you want things. Sort of like a waiter, but less portable."

*Radra stares and ponders at the sign*

"Might be some interesting loot involved. If not, I can always charge them for my services."

((I think I can be there (looks like 5PM EST for me), and hopefully nothing like dinner will get in the way.))

*Shalin glances at the notice*

Hmmm, a rare herb ... I bet i could find many other herbs to help out with my apothecary training.

*Jots down a little note indicating that she will be at the specified time and place*

Overheard at the Four Winds Inn...

"Well, those fighting types never think of the obvious solution, do they - arrange an army to assault the swamp when you can sneak in and get the stuff without a scrape" states the alchemist blandly.

"True enough, but it seems to me that the paladin did quite well for herself," the sage gnome replies.

"How so?" asks the wizard.

"To walk straight up to you and state that she is looking for the <snigger> famous <snigger> Lucius, alchemist of Port Royale. That's a bit rich, don't you think?"

The wizard does not appear to think it "rich" at all.

"So you give her the herbal extract to save the girl. Bit easier than assaulting a swamp, or even sneaking in, isn't it?" asks the gnome.

The wizard scratches his chin. "I suppose so."

"And then...let me get this last part straight," the gnome appears ready to burst into laughter at any moment, "you suggest she accompany you to Midor for 'pack horse duty'".

The wizard shrugs.

"So she goes on Shira's scenic journey with you and the mighty Talion for the first time?"

The wizard nods, not understanding where any humor could be found in this discussion.

"Then you get to Midor, and she delivers her message to the poor girl's employer."

"Well, yes", snaps the wizard.

"Takes care of the chicken feed bandits?"

"Yes", replies the wizard impatiently.

"And then you mine the copper, tin, and gems?"

The wizard's eyes light up. "Yes, that's right."

"Now, this is the part of the story that I like," the gnome says, "tell me it again."

"Talion goes and refines the ore, I pay the paladin for her efforts, she gives me the raw gems, he gives me the ingots, and I return to Port Royale, and, ultimately, your fine establishment."

The gnome roars with laughter. "So, wizard, what you are telling me is that the paladin did two good works, got paid, never saw the dangers of the swamp and...the icing on the cake...you returned to Port Royale unaccompanied with 400 pounds of supplies. Who had pack horse duty?"

Quietly, the wizard gets up and walks out of the room, looking flabbergasted.
