A visit to the Vanderzee Estate
Posted: 28 Oct 2005 03:47 PM
Sitting on the bed in his room in the Four Winds Inn the man looked across the room at the suit set so neatly placed on the dresser. It cost a sum and perhaps it would be enough with the right assurance. A slight shrug and he stood walking over to feel the fabric.

He heard from a select few individuals that a particular man may have something of interest but even more so he was from Midor. But why did he come to the port? The man sighed recalling the poorly robbery that occurred one day prior. At the very least his face wasn’t seen and that maybe enough. With a brief moment of silence Vakal put the suit on sitting his leathers and anything else inconspicious inside the chest he combed his hair back nice and neat like leaving his and locking it behind. He made his way down the stairs and into the main room of then inn where he greeted Uwe, the inn master, with a nod then moved to the door casting a resist elements ward to prevent any rain from harshening his appearance and left for the Vanderzee estate.

The streets of the port plaza were as busy as ever, but it made for great cover and from what he had noticed, noone had noticed his presence which made it easy for him. A few minutes passed as he came to the door of the once abandoned estate where he took one last look over himself and cast two final spells in preparation, a one owl’s wisdom to enhance his perception and a eagle’s splendor to make himself seem more attractive and perhaps noble as well as increasing his confidence. With one last deep breath he creaked the door open and began his search for the man where he had last seen him inside.

Sounds of cooking from the nearby kitchen and obvious rebuilding work can be heard as the door is opened. Inside his study, Lord Vanderzee is quietly reading from one of his many books as he hears the door opening. "Oh, Patty, be a dear and see who that is at the door."

"I believe it is for you M'Lord." the help yelled back upon seeing Vakal.

The Lord of the Estate sat up from his chair and sigh deeply, "I've got to find a quieter place." He noted the location of his trusty long sword and walk out to meet this man.

Vanderzee emerged from his study holding a book titled 'Theus'. He tried to flaten the wringles on his purple shirt with a quick sweep of his hand, "How can I help you?"

"Ah greetings sir." He said as he approached the lord and extended a hand.

"My name is Ven'tz Mu'rabanatuetz, a citizen of this here port, and I wished to welcome you personally. It’s a lovely place this is with people of all kinds but sadly...." He hangs his head a bit. "It has its lowlife like any town."

He them rose his head to look the man in his eyes. "I heard that your caravan was attacked on the journey here and for that I must express my most sincerest of condolences, but more then that I would like to offer any help that you might need as us citizens must stick together against brigands."

He paused letting the words sit in and glanced at the book. "A scholar perhaps? A true honor to meet a man who can enjoy a good book." He smiled looking back to the man. "A true honor indeed."

Vanderzee cast a judging glare at the man before finally shaking his hand. "The Caravan being attacked was expected, nothing you need to apploigize for." He took a final look down at his book and slamed it shut. "I appericate your offer of assistance Lord Mu'rabanatuetz, but my wife and I are doing fine on our own."

He passed the book over to the man, "Yes, but you've probably read this one before. I was just trying to gather insight about the magic problems we had in the past."

As he exhalled deeply, he spoke up again, "Now, really, tell me why you are here."

He smiled and nodded slightly looking over the book in his hands in careful detail. While he looks over the book he continues speaking to the lord.

"Honestly? My reason for bieng here is simple. First and foremost I had heard that you may have some magical talents and because of that I believe with my own that I may provide some insight into whatever problems you may possess and in return we might help one another in the future." He flips a few pages.

"You mentioned that you need no help but yet are searching for something, therefore should you -ever- need help don't hesitate to ask around at the port for me or simply leave a message at the Four Winds as I have a....friend who stays there. I believe that should you ever take my offer you will find I have many talents that would aid you, but I'll let you make that determination for yourself, sir. In truth I'm a business man at heart and sell many types of information as well, even of 'mysterious nightly visitors'. " He then closed the book and held it out for the lord.

"An excellent read I must say." Vakal smiled slightly.

The Lord of the house nods and takes his book back. "Your offer is appericated, but as of now I'm not sure I have much use for 'him'." Vanderzee starts to show him to the door and quietly shuts it behind, "Good night Sir."

He nodded swiftly and made his way back to the Four winds where after going to his room he changed back into his normal attire and brought with him a small sack of gold to Owe and placed it on a small table.

"Sir, I have here enough coin to pay my rent four fold. Please see to it that if a mister Ven'tz Mu'rabanatuetz is needed that and messages for him be forwarded to my room, I would be most appreciated.” With a nod and a gesture of thanks he left the inn without so much as hearing a reply confident that the gnome was competent enough to understand and that if he wanted to continue his business with Vakal that he would do as he asked.

Two days later...

His conversation with Jessup couldn't have gone better he thought. This was it, the time to prove himself useful, and so he departed from his room of the inn under the cover of nightfall wearing his black leathers and long great coat, but this time his coat held a raven so perfectly nestled inside, to the estate once more.

Arriving at the door he checked and noted the lock open then took a few steps back to cast two invisibility spells. One on himself and the other his raven then slowly creek the door open ever so slightly and moved inside.

He looked up and around once more at the lavish room wishing quietly that he could have one of his own, but there wasn't anytime for that. He had to make it in and out without being seen and aptly applied the shadowdance until he reached Vanderzee's study.

He pressed his bird helmed ear up against the door hearing nothing. Then reaching into his coat he pulled out his invisible raven gently and sat it on the ground.

"You keep out of sight you hear me? But tell me what is going on. I'll be outside." He whispered to his familiar.

Checking the lock on the study he nodded silently to himself and opened the door jsut enough to allow his bird inside and closed it just as gently, soon after making his way upstairs to make sure he didn't miss anyone but staying against the wall all the same.

Inside the room Zarathos, his raven, takes a long beady-eyed look around before flying up to the ceiling and finding a suitable position that was well hidden and comfortable for him.

Ascending the stairs he - under the guise of shadow - searched what rooms he could keeping out of sight of any he had seen and searched the rooms taking careful consideration to leave things how they were. somewhat disappointed he made his way downstairs and out the door as quickly and silently as he had come.

Sitting in a familiar café just down the street the various people sat in hushed whispers about the bird helmed man in black leather who just strolled in and laid back in the chair without so much a word.

Meanwhile Zarathos perched in the estate kept a watchful eye for anything out of the ordinary and was careful to report anything back to Vakal via the empathic link of the familiar.

Nothing in the house seemed out of the ordinary. Granted there were some locks and traps, but that can be attributed to Lord Vanderzee's paranoia after living for so long in Midor.

The Lord and Lady of the house appear to be good people and have been spending most of the time talking about ideas to help the unfortunates in the city. They have also spoken at great lengths about the temple in Port Royale regarding another large donation and possibly redecorating.
