Of Blood, Shadow, and Ambition

The morning was cold in the Icy Vale slopes and on a large stair cased hill a dark figure sat on a now smoldering corpse, still letting off a almost silent hiss as the heated blood dripped onto the cold snow.

The figure looked out at the snow pondering life. It thought it funny at how so very little he had accomplished despite his efforts. He met three individuals who seemed to bare some use and he intentions were obvious. He wished to learn from them. From each he witnessed different traits he wanted himself. All his life in many ways he had been similar to that candelabra in Carfax, a mere mimic, but perhaps if he something notable were learned...

The corpse now felt cold to the touch, the hiss now silent as the grave. The figure was no longer, but now on a journey. He would wait no longer but learn that which he studied and observed, the shadowdance.

Wandering through the streets of Port Royal Vakal came across one of the halflings he had been observing for quite some time, Tomi, who he had even befriended. In essence he hated Tomi, his attitude, his ability to speak with others, and even....being better then himself. But he continued his charade and spoke with kindness until they eventually decided to attempt to locate a mine that Vakal had been searching for. It was only by sheer happenstance that they would be going through the woods near Paws to which he had forgotten its name.

A week prior to that he had been in the same woods, greeted by a dryad or some other kind of creature, he didn’t care for details. The wench taunted him as it tore at his body barely allowing him to escape with his life, but they were slow. But now he would go back, perfect, he thought. As they came around the bend of the coast and into the woods they saw the creatures.

Vakal rushed into the battle just behind Tomi but his irritation overcame him and he took the initiative quickly lashing out with his blades, but one of them had caught him by surprise striking with one of their claws but his body reacted in a way he had only theorized about and managed a dodge. To the creatures dismay this one act had triggered what Vakal needed. He had discovered the basics of the shadow dance and quickly cut them all down with the aid of Tomi.

Ecstatic, he was barely able to hold in his joy as the last of the cursed dryads fell, he cheered. Tomi chuckled forcing him to realize he was not alone and quickly with a short cough resumed his calm demeanor attempting to hide his embarrassment then merely gestured to move on hoping that something would come along to clear both of their minds. How he loathed the halfing but he had his uses as both a friend and even....teacher.

Life continued as normal, Vakal went day in and day out acting to put it quite simply, like a bumpkin or goof. Despite his abilities he felt and others reactions showed it, they thought he was a joke at the very least.

It was a cold rainy day walking through the Mirghul forest with Marrya and Tomi. They had went to see a Crag cat hunting ground Marrya spoke of, but as they pressed further and further into the woods a tension began to build in his mind. A deep seeded anger that pressed at his mind urging, pleading, for Vakal to slay Tomi where he stood, but he held back acting as he always did, a charade of a bumpkin.

As the day grew to a close Marrya seemed less and less happy which in turn caused some annoyance because Tomi was the only one left to speak with, that was until the headless abomination had shown its face and despite all his attempts to save Marrya who had left off on her own he only received a barrage of off hand remarks that rewarded him with nothing but a hate that could only be rivaled by his disdain for Nevron and his hideously ugly robes.

The day grew to a close having fought off the headless creature where upon they ventured back to the Midor docks with a brief but interesting stop at the “magic meat” in the plains where strangely enough they were attacked by a horde of rats, but again prior to this his hate was fueled yet again by the remarks that ensued.

Grumbling and filled with anger he stood at the docks of Midor pondering to himself slowly digging his nails into the fists resting at his side causing the crimson wet blood to trickle down his coat into the crystal blue water. He would speak to Jessup, the only true power he had heard of, the charade had to stop.
