Another "new player, first impressions" thread Posted: 21 Oct 2005 06:43 AM |
Well, here we go.
Good: A lot of things. The crafting system is amazing, it really got me interested and provides a great platform for RP. The world design is great, soft slopes on hill and the mage tower comes to mind as really special, but Vives overall feels very well made. The Hak's were worth downloading :)
The RP is what I would expect of a game world as serious as Vives. Then again I expected something great and the RP is truly great. Players are very helpful as well. The RP rewards have been good so far, at a relatively low level 60-150 xp per reward is very nice. Not that I'm playing for rewards, but previous experience with RP rewards have been that they are more of a "good work, keep it up" by the DM's than helpful in advancing my character.
Now to a few things on the "bad" side. Really, you can consider everything I don't put down as "bad" to be great. I just don't have the energy to keep praising everything that's good in Vives :)
1. Lag. Vives, at times, lags worse than any nwn server I have played on. I have understood this isn't normal, but it's discouraging me from undertaking some of those high risk adventures.
2. Full PvP. I find it more fun with Party PvP. It's hard to have that quick and clear communication needed to make Full PvP really fun for me. Then again I play a wizard, it's probably not much of a problem with other classes.
3. Rations, firewood, bedroll. Not really a big deal, but definitly a system I could do without. I see the benefits in that it makes renting rooms ever more meaningful, but still more annoying than fun.
I realize points 2 and 3 is something I have to live with, and compared to all the fun Vives have to offer they are small issues. I also realize they are parts of the server that will not change, especially not because of my whining. So to sum it up, point one is the only point that contains something constructive I hope the lag will get better. |

Just a helpful note on resting - I used to lug around firewood everywhere too. Then I realised I didn't have to.
Most safe areas where it makes sense to rest (eg Four Winds Inn Basement, Order of the Seven Sisters) don't require firewood: only really dangerous wilderness areas (eg inside a volcano, inside a place populated by Death Slaads, inside a Dragon's lair) do.
So there's no need to rent a room, really, unless you want somewhere to store excessive amounts of stuff you don't want to carry around, but would rather hang on to and trade with another PC than sell. The main use of rental rooms is for the rental container. In fact, the great majority of characters don't actually have a rental room. |

| I think most people do not have rental rooms because there aren't too many available. All the cheaper ones seem to be taken, and a new character can't afford to pay for the higher priced ones. |

1. Lag. Vives, at times, lags worse than any nwn server I have played on. I have understood this isn't normal, but it's discouraging me from undertaking some of those high risk adventures.
I think I've made a small dent on that.
2. Full PvP. I find it more fun with Party PvP. It's hard to have that quick and clear communication needed to make Full PvP really fun for me. Then again I play a wizard, it's probably not much of a problem with other classes.
Personally, I enjoy the challenge of #2 and picking my tactics so that I do not hurt party members. Sometimes, I even get it right.
Rise to the challenge, I say.
And it makes for interesting RP when you accidently kill a party member (or maul them terribly).
It's a dangerous world out there. Do be careful.

I've never seen the full PvP as a problem either. And so far I've only killed 3 people with my spells and my own character twice. Two others were due to a hound archon's lightning. Despite having warned them that they should not be between enemies and the archon, they neglected that fact and got roasted. Prudence pays off. ;)
And the other deaths, including my PC, were due to a nice water elemental that reacted a bit too quickly.
As Paul said, the world is dangerous, but remember that wizardry is a whole lot more dangerous! *nods wisely* |

Rather than start yet another thread, I'll post *my* first impressions here on this one.
Overall, I give Vives two hearty thumbs up. After playing several hours, I've found the community to be all I expected, and more. The care, and attention to detail provided by the Vives team stands out among the various servers I have visited.
Mr. Walker and company should be justly proud of the accomplishment here, as should also the player base. It appears that it will be fairly easy to call this my server of choice... |
